MINIX hard disk doesn't work on Hatari 1.8.0

Postby rabindranath72 » Wed Aug 12, 2015 12:40 pm

Hi all,
I tried installing MINIX on a ACSI hard disk under Hatari 1.8.0 and MINIX freezes at boot. With version 1.7.0 and 1.6.x it works perfectly.

Cheers,
Antonio

Can you provide the image (privately or publicly) so that I can test it?

Hatari v1.9 is going to be released soon and it would be nice to make sure all regressions are fixed.

Hi Eero,
the images are here:

http://www.minix3.org/previous-versions/Atari/

just boot with disk01, when asked insert disk02. If there is an hard drive attached (the default 80Mb image is fine) the boot process stops. If there is no hard drive attached, it goes forward.
The procedure works flawlessly with 1.6.x and 1.7.0 (which I am using now.)

Cheers,
Antonio

I've tried both with Hatari v1.6.2 and the latest version from Mercurial:

Code: Select all

  hatari -m --disk-a minix/disk01.st  --acsi minix/hd80mb.img

Both behave exactly the same. On boot one sees this text:

Code: Select all

Booting MINIX 1.5. Copyright 1991 Prentice-Hall, Inc.
Insert ROOT diskette and hit RETURN (or specify bootdev)

If I press Enter directly or first type e.g. "C", I get the same response after A: and given disk are accessed:

Code: Select all

File system panic: Invalid root file system

Push RESET button

What *exactly* you do to get things working with Hatari v1.6?

I think you get the same message because you left disk01 inside, so MINIX tries to mount a filesystem which doesn't really exist.
When you get the "Insert ROOT" prompt, you should eject disk01 and insert disk02. Here's where 1.6.x and 1.8.0 differ: the former goes forward, the latter gets stuck. I followed exactly the same sequence of steps with the same disk images.
Not sure if this makes a difference to the versions of Hatari, but disk02 is a 720k image, although the original disk was 360k.

v1.8 seems to work fine, MINIX says it's creating RAM disk and loading things. After disk03, I get "Welcome to MINIX" and login prompt and login works using password listed here:

Nope, doesn't work for me. I downloaded a new copy of 1.8.0, I started it up, and "hooked" it to an already installed and configured MINIX hard disk, and MINIX doesn't mount the hard drive. It's working perfectly well on 1.7.0. Are you sure you have an ACSI image loaded in Hatari?
I can send you the image to test if you give me an email address (it's 4Mb compressed, I can't attach it here.)
By the way, the 1.7.0 configuration I am using is: 16Mhz ST, 4Mb, TOS 1.04UK, Blitter and clock emulation, slower more compatible emulation, no patching of timer nor TOS boot. I am using the same Hatari config file both for 1.7.0 and 1.8.0.

Cheers,
Antonio

EDIT: sorry, meant forthcoming v1.9, not v1.8, that was typo.

I am definitely going to give it a go as soon as you release it.

What platform are you on? Preliminary Windows 1.9 builds are available from the Hatari download page, and another Mac OS X preliminary can be found on my dropbox.

Windows:
http://download.tuxfamily.org/hatari/test_1.9.0/

Mac:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/669 ... sx.dmg.zip

(For those who download these builds, please remember to send any regressions to the Hatari devel mailinglist)

Thanks! Actually I didn't look for the beta, not too much of a reason honestly, seeing that 1.7.0 works well for what I am doing.

Hi,

I think I've got the reason why Minix (and all other programs/OSs, that use ACSI in interrupt mode) don't work on 1.8.0.
Bit 5 in the GPIB, which signals an interrupt from ASCI, is never reset and no new interrupt will occur.
After I inserted a call of FDC_ClearIRQ() at the beginning of function hdc.c/Asci_WriteCommandByte(), everything was running again.

That's great! So do 1.7.0 and 1.6.x do that?

It's better to test a beta version before release, so that potential bugs can be fixed to a release. Testing years old versions isn't very useful.

Could you try Hatari v1.9:
http://download.tuxfamily.org/hatari/1.9.0/
?

It was released over month ago.
