Steem download outdated?

Postby darkhog » Wed Jan 13, 2016 4:05 pm

I assume this steem.atari.st is the main page of the software because of fairly recent news. However in the info window of downloaded version I can see it's 3.2, compiled in 2004! Where I can download build of current (3.6-3.7) ones?

You are likely referring to Steem SSE which is considered a fork from the 3.2 source code rather than a continuation of it.

It can be found here:
http://ataristeven.exxoshost.co.uk/Steem.htm
TT030: 4MB/16MB + Crazy Dots, Mega"SST" 12, STacy 2, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

Steem 3.2 is latest regular Steem version, and it is from 2004. And it still works great with 99% Atari SW.

It continued to follow version numbers though :)
It could have started at 1.0.

I would consider this "fork" to be the current version of Steem, even though technically I know it isn't. I'm sure if anyone else like Russel and Anthony Hayward came along they wouldn't want to continue from the old code base, they'd want to start working with 3.8 and maybe create a fork from there if they didn't collaborate with Steven.

Regardless the sad fact is - the latest versions of Steem are very nicely hidden from anyone except those who visit Atari-forum, or who notices the search result to exxoshost outside the top 5 in google. It's great if we only want people out there to use 3.2 forever!

The highest ranking relevant google searches ("steem atari", "atari st emulator" etc) have results that either link directly to steem.atari.st, or other pages about ST emulation that lead to steem.atari.st. (example 1, example 2).

The github for steem has no mention of Steem SSE.
If you have 3.2, then the "check for updates" obviously doesn't find anything, and the help section of 3.2 points to steem.atari.st

Like all paths used to lead to Rome, now they lead to 3.2!

I think we really need to get the webmaster of steem.atari.st (Rich?) to put in info about SSE steem on the front page, and in the download page.

Maybe those pages weren't updated for a long time.
Maybe the GitHub Steem source could contain a link to the "development" section like before with google code.

The Steem SSE SourceForge home page states:

Steem SSE

An update of legendary Atari ST emulator Steem

(Yeah!)

That should be enough, SourceForge is well indexed.
I find it odd that search engines list Pacifist before Steem SSE, but maybe they're not so good after all if they keep top listing stale sites.

Personally I'm fine with Steem SSE being a fork, it allows funny references to bad movies, martial arts, etc.
It would be no trouble either to be official Steem, but then as a ST (STE+STF) emulator, not just STE.

One thing to remember, the site has moved, it will take time to get "ranking" on google again.

Thats a good question, likely more sites will need linking to the new site, more hits the site gets, the more it should improve ranking, though google throws a lot of curve balls into their formula.

I have one idea - Steven could put that link to Steem SSE in his signature (as Exxoss and me did). It would improve Steem SSE page visibility.

Added the same STEEM link to my sig as well. Google will eventually figure things out and improve the rankings.

About the signature...

- It's a good idea, did that.

- I know my original signature is silly, but I'm so used to it I can't remove it when I try to.

- It's friendly of you but maybe excessive to add the link to your signature.
You have your own projects, and Steem google status is not that vital.

I have emailed every email address I could find (from the steem.atari.st site, and the github) suggesting they put a note in the steem download page that steem 3.2 is 12 years old, and SSE Steem is a currently maintained branch of it.

Thanks a lot! This will no doubt also help Steem SSE's google rank a bit also!

Umm - dare I say it, that website could possibly do with a teensy bit of a design overhaul.

The links all seem to suffer from random sizes and highlighting and it's not entirely clear to the casual visitor what they should be clicking on.
There are far too many links that go straight back to Steem 3.2 to trap the unwary for a start!

At least what he did is on the Download page, so if anyone goes to bite the bullet and download it they should see the info about Steem SSE
