NVDI 5 installation fails...

Postby Dark Willow » Wed Nov 02, 2011 9:04 pm

I'm having issues trying to get NVDI 5 to install properly with steem. Using TOS 2.06 and Teradesk. The installation program runs through normally, as if everything is fine. But when I quit and reboot the system hangs before the desktop appears, with just the NVDI start-up text showing. No bombs. Disabling NVDI I clean booted and noticed that nvdi.prg and wdialog.prg are in the autofolder, but that GEMSYS hasn't been created, and BTFONTS has been copied onto the A:\ drive and not the hard disk Yellow_Colorz_PDT_34

Any ideas on what's going on there?

GEMSYS consist of some nvdi*.sys files that are, I think, the device drivers for the screen.
If they are not there, NVDI hangs... I experienced the same when I had to rename the nvdi*.sys files when using Radeon but forgot to "re-enable" them when I changed to Videl/NVDI setup.
I think you just need to create the folder and copy those files over there.

Not sure why it did not copy them during your installation. May be it's some thing to do with the screen detection and copying the right drivers ??

Thanks for the heads up. Does any one have a copy of the files it should install? Everything on the NVDI disks seems compressed.

You can decompress those files with LHarc
Mega"SST" 12, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

OK, been tinkering.

Have manually decompressed the files with LHarc, so now have:

C:\BTFONTS
C:\GEMSYS (inside which I have put the folders ATARI, ET4000, MAC, MCX, MTC, and PC)
C:\CPX

in the root C:\ there is ASSIGN.SYS, COPS.ACC and NVDI.INF (along with the NEWDESK.INF)

and NVDI.PRG along with WDIALOG.PRG

When booting, after the memory test screen, the NVDI info does not appear, instead goes straight to a GEM dialogue box with the following error message:

Please run the system extension
WDIALOG, which is supplied with
NVDI, or use the multitasking
system Magic 4
[QUIT]

When QUIT is selected it then boots as normal, with no NVDI.

The NVDI.INF file was blank as install wouldn't run normally, so I created one in Everest using the example from the NVDI 5 manual. I've included the NVDI.INF and ASSIGN.SYS in the ZIP file.

Note: I have TeraDesk installed, and have tried this with it both enabled and disabled, and the result is the same. Emulated system is 32Mhz, 14mb.

All thoughts welcome with this one. Unless I am missing something really obvious I can't see what's wrong :(

Are you using a mounted PC folder for your Steem hard disk?
If that's the case this may well be the culprit.

Try to use Pasti HD emulation on a hard disk image. This is far more reliable for 'critical' stuff. :)

You need to have wdialog in the AUTO folder.
May be NVDI.INF is missing the content, I will provide mine when I am back home tonight.

NVDI 5 installation fails...

Postby Dal » Thu Nov 24, 2011 8:50 am

NVDI.PRG and WDIALOG.PRG both need to be in the AUTO directory at the root of your boot partition (usually C). As Wong states, you're missing the NVDI.INF content as well. I'll upload mine in about half an hour or so.

Here's mine.
Compare it with Dal's and see what's useful for you.
You should use the NVDI.CPX to update it.

NVDI.PRG and WDIALOG.PRG are both in the AUTO folder - Sorry, reading it back I realised my post made it seem otherwise!

TNH, I have not tried NVDI on a virtual machine, only physical.
It may need some other configuration that I am not familiar with.

Thanks for that. I tried using this one. It's changed what's happening. After the mem test, the NVDI version load text shows OK, and so does WDIALOG loaded message, but before the desktop appears it kicks the system into another re-boot, and it gets trapped in an endless loop. I cloned this same setup on my physical STe (1mb) and the same thing is happening there, so I wonder if it's my NVDI copy of NVDI that's corrupted, esp. since it seems unhappy to install from disk.

Does anyone have a copy of NVDI 4.x DS-DD disk images? I wonder if that version might be better for the STe anyway and I'm not a fan of COPS over XCONTROL.

My copy came from:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16225

I'd like to get V4 though, simply because it installs direct from DS-DD on my real STe. I've got it otherwise up and running now so less worried about STeem, though that would still be nice to get fixed, if only to prove to myself I can make it work

wongck, if you still need help, please contact me and i will send you some files for the solution and read this article http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20318. I use Steem with GEMDOS HDD and it works well.

Just noticed these points.... sounds promising. I'll give these a try and let you know what happens. If all goes well I'll post a step-by-step guide.

Possibly a stupid question, but do you have the NVDI install license no. written on the disk you install from? Bit of a long shot but I found that if, after NVDI asks for the serial no. and you eject the disk to check the license no. , and then forget to put it back in until the TOS prompt for you to insert disk back into the drive, NVDI will install but fail with symptoms like you describe. I found if you make sure the disk is in before you press the ok (or whatever it is) button on the serial no. page on the install package the problem won't happen. Probably best to try a re-install. I presume it is something to do with the copy 'protection'.
