Boot device fix

Postby Entuzio » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:18 pm

Grettings to all Atarianer and emulator enthusiast.

Posting a correction, in the form of a program for AUTO folder, which eliminates the annoying floppy A: dialog error in GEM-u for which was most impossible for using or installing of some Application's in GEM like (NVDI 5, SpeedoGDOS, Atari Procalc , Clipboard error's etc) If you have any of similar symptoms, this fix obtain its correction and eliminates this drive A: dialog error. STEEM uses the Host File system wihout HDD drivers and therefore is the boot drive in STEEM always drive A:. Some programs often rely on system files there are located on the boot drive, but if the boot disk is A: and not C: where the system files and data realy are then comes to a big inconvenience. So this little source programm set's via Systemvariable drive C: as Boot disk. This works in Hatari to if the Boot drive is a GEMDOS Host HDD. Just write, compile and copy to AUTO folder. I apologize for my bad English. :D

SpeedoGDOS 5: no Driver's where found https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/67W74xXX4ZtV_pWM6nrfHw?feat=directlink

With this fix it work's: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/vW2lljVg6UhjBvwPoNklUQ?feat=directlink

Sorry, but you are wrong with some statements about Steem.
A is not always the boot drive in Steem. It can 'boot' from mounted 'hard drive' too. But TOS actually will set as default drive C for instance only when boot from C is successful (actually driver needs to do it). Steem will load AUTO, ACCs etc from C (GEMDOS emulation) after warm reset. So, not after 'power up'. You need to click with right mouse button on reset icon for it. And must check on 'boot from hard disk' too.

It means not that your proggy is useless. I just like to clarify things and correcting errors.

And when we are about Steem and it's hard disk emulations: there are cases when GEMDOS emulation of hard disk - so mounting some DIR of Windows (Or Linux) as Atari partitions fails : for instance games Shadowgate, Deja Vu 1 & 2 and Uninvited work not from GEMDOS emulation, only with real hard disk emulation, so with Pasti and hard disk image. The reason is that Steem uses some patching of TOS GEMDOS filesystem by GEMDOS hard disk emulation - it works in most of cases, but not always.
I guess that there are some other SW too which needs true emulation - Petari's game adaptations for instance (where F15R files are present). + others ...
