Disks That Should Work

Postby Steem Authors » Wed Nov 05, 2003 6:04 pm

Updated 25/10/04
----------------------------------------
Introduction
----------------------------------------
This list is intended as a guide for people who want to help us by finding out why some programs don't work properly on Steem. It is not complete or totally accurate - there may be some versions of the disks mentioned that work differently than this list may suggest.

Most of the disks' names are followed by a full stop. This means they have been tested on a real STE and work.

The disks preceeded by "Don't Debug" are disks with problems we know about but can't fix or haven't got round to fixing. The main problem, which we have no idea how to fix, is the timing of the divs and divu CPU instructions. If anyone has any revelations that may help us fix those problems then please let us know (steem@gmx.net).

If you want to help us discover Steem bugs then it is best to pick an STE tested disk from this list and use Steem's debug build (http://steem.atari.st/programmers.htm) to debug it.

Another way to help us is to test disks on an STE that haven't been tested yet, particularly mono games that we cannot possibly test (due to lack of a mono monitor).

Cheers,
Russell Hayward

Dark side protection

Postby Gunstick » Sun Nov 16, 2003 2:13 pm

Hi

I think I have the protection of DSOTS. It says that it's the same as in syntax terror (was there one?) and also probably the one from rings of medusa 2.

So I don't know if I'm allowed to give that out but if it helps perfecting the emulator.

Anyone from Delta Force reading this? the code has marked "New Mode" in it.

Greetings
Georges

That's interesting, thanks. I seem to remember that Syntax Terror once worked on Steem, as I only have the protected version that would be odd (as emulation has only got better AFAIK).

I'm terrible at debugging protection (and everything else). I don't suppose there is anyone out there who knows exactly what this protection is doing, can tell me the exact line it is going wrong, can give me full details with diagrams for how to fix it, and can watch over me as I make the changes to make sure I don't mess it up? :D

I'll mail the code to you, hoping not to offend anyone having done that superbe protection :-)

Perhaps seeing the source could help, and there's the encryptor too.

It's commented in german of course :-)

Hi Gunstick,

Newmode pops up now and again on #atariscne , I get the feeling he would have no problem with you spreading the source code. I was trying to persuade him to start coding again but he's left that all behind him.

COMMENTED protection code....shock!! ;)

Cheers Shw aka Grazey
btw, did you ever check out the final UMD release, it's far better than the one you saw at STNICCC.

well it's not THAT much commented.
Sort of: don't change anything from here on or else you will get in big trouble

I sent the code to the steem developers. Let's see if it helps a bit.

hm i could get:
European Demos Disk 1 (protected).
European Demos Disk 2

to run on steem... ok only with a patch...somehow the disk change recognation seems not to work...

unfortunately i lost my "scheibenkleister" disk controller book so i can't get more infos why it doesn't work...but i know the excat position of the routine which makes trouble...if that helps ;)

if someone wants that patch drop me a mail ;)

That's odd, I can't get my version to work at all. Are you sure you are running the protected version? There is an unprotected version that works fine as far as I know.

Yes that's the unprotected version, it seems to work fine for me in every way. What goes wrong with the disk swapping when you try it? Have you tried turning off drive B?

The protected version crashes and burns almost immediately, just after fading to blue, I can upload it if anyone is interested. It seems to be the same protection routine that is used on the Transbeauce 2D1 demo.

hm please have a look to "my other thread" maybe better to split it up into a new...;)

I've attached the disk image, it would be great if anyone could figure out what is going on. It doesn't seem to be using div at least, so it should be fixable.

Good news, Syntax Terror and the protected version of Darkside of the Spoon work on Steem v3.2. Ijor found the bug when he was debugging something else, I can't remember what it was now.

high speed pascal v1.3

Postby charles » Sun Oct 14, 2007 9:54 pm

i'm certainly not gonna demand this , but who somebody help me with this answear!!............
high speed pascal, the programming language for st,ste 1040,
works and functions well under steem but provides
troubles using ..........

delay(x);

causes errors?
it crashes on steem and not real ataris...
any other users try pascal with steem and delay command?
is this a bug ?i am aware of a conflict the gfa command
bios(6) has within steem.........
it can not be changed due to some steem internal thing , but is this the same for pascal's delay command ,,,both are timer oriented ,,,so it's got me wondering

bios(6)

Postby Steem Authors » Mon Dec 24, 2007 3:41 pm

Hi,

I'm not aware of any problems with bios(6). The timer is maintained by the OS on the basis of interrupts. Check that you've got the CPU speed set to normal and a standard screen and it should work fine.

Short of you uploading some compiled examples of what's going wrong, I can't see how the STEEM authors can help you out?

steem authors helping me out

Postby charles » Mon Dec 24, 2007 10:55 pm

in a round about way , i should be indicating that hspascal v1.13 has a function ..(eh bios ................... not xbios).i will change the color pallette another time(ha ha ha).atari monochrome , i love it. not color
called .......

delay(#of milliseconds);

it (hspascal) aslo includes

evnt_timer(hi(),lo()) which functions normally under the steem emulation.

and as well does offer

function tickcal:longint;---essentially is xbios(6)!!!!!but not caliprating timer.or am !!!!!??????(ha ha ha again)

really my issue lies with the hspacal v1.13 compilier crashing whenever
i encounter the
delay(xxx) ;
command................

okay tried all solutions , no big deal because i can just peek at system address for the timer a, while under suprvisor mode,
and obtain timer reads...
this seemed like a good place to ask question about software conflicting with steem. steem has great deal of my time invested programming items and am constantly manuever-ing round' answear-less codes.

this what crashed my steem ,normal screen settings ,cpu 100% ,monochrome /highres........high speed pascal v1.13..

(************************)
Program Delay_Demo;
Begin;
WriteLn('Going to sleep for 5 seconds.');
Delay( 5*1000 );
End.
(**************************)

crashes the first time and second time leaves the st emulator just with blank screen and drive light on....desesarving a cold re-set.

well get back to me ..no real rush...thanks

Erm .. I meant a compiled example. Include all the text inside your code as to what it should be doing and what it really does. Gives the authors something to work on etc.

compilied code

Postby charles » Tue Dec 25, 2007 12:16 am

uh miguk ,
thats it .
its complete....
i do not think compling a crashing scode would be good......
compilied or not ...
as soon as this command (delay)is encountered within steem...
it bombs the whole editor and
needs a restart after the second encounter.
i'm not lying i do alot of musical stuff where the note on times are at different times then note off times, so i use easy method of timing.... pause program for specified amount of milliseconds... i avoid this method for more sophisticated timings but have had to rely on it at different occasions....ok i'm not going to reserve any more space for this article
of delay(xxx) because nobody really uses pascal anymore anyhow..at least no more than you me and maybe glockey.

Remember that any code you write that makes a real st/e hang or bomb out will do the same to Steem. If your program bombs out badly and Steem can't recover from it, your pc will have to be reset manually.

yeah that is mearly a simply parellal between crashing steem and crashing your pc, i can code with steem , i cannot code without pc...
i may code either direction...i just desire suffice info as to maybe stay away from delay,ya know i say.

Well, the Steem developers will have an easier job if you compile the snippet and send it to them for testing. Maybe you can ask the compiler to leave an assembly source too, which would help.

If you don't, then they need to find your compiler and type in your example themselves... that would be annoying :)

Automation 97 doesn't work on TOS 1.0 but it does work correctly on TOS 1.2
It reboots just after loading the boot sector probably while unpacking the menu.
Automation disks 96 and 98 work on TOS 1.0.

I'm sure it works on SainT with TOS 1.0
Still got, still working: Atari 4Mb STe, 520STFM, 2.5Mb STF.
Hardware: Cumana CSA 354, Ultimate Ripper, Blitz Turbo, Synchro Express II (US and UK Versions).

The big question is whether it works on a real Atari under TOS 1.0. It could be SainT at fault here in a funny kind of way.

Do you run Steem in STFM 'mode' under TOS 1.0? This could also have an effect as TOS 1.0 was not intended to be run on an STE.

What version of STeem are you running?
TT030: 4MB/16MB + Crazy Dots, Mega"SST" 12, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's
