Everything I am seeing on this topic is 6 months old??

Why can this not be fixed?

SO this work - around still works? how do I use the wayback machine??? Because I can get the main page to view.. but anything else I try and look at fails.

This is really too bad, it looked like a great reasource.

You can get some of the information at least to show if you navigate to the desired 'blank' page and then select the 'view source' tab. Not particularly handy on the main page, but if you have a specific article page it should show (to some extent better or worse!), which is pretty much what wongck pointed to in one of the posts above.

yeah, I hear ya, just wondering why after soo long this cannot be fixed? could not the data be migrated somewhere else? Or am I now the only one who needs it?

I think it is just down to Dal finding the time to fix it which I don't think he has at the moment, afaik the way the wiki is setup it uses the same user database as AF so it's not that that easy to just hand it off to someone else to fix unfortunately, plus I'm sure there are some other complications I am unaware of. Would love to see it back just like everyone else as I have 5 articles ready to drop into it when it does

Hi All,

I only have time for fleeting visits to the forum at the moment. I have a few PMs that I’m yet to open.

It will get looked at - there are a number of issues with the wiki to resolve so it’s not a quick fix by any stretch.

I have far more urgent things to attend to for the time being, but rest assured it’s not forgotten.

No it's not dead.
It is still possible to edit it.
But in normal viewing mode, it is not displaying the text from the articles.

I don't see the problem as the issue is with the parser code and not the database... on the other hand you may export database without user password hashes, and finally - there are no passwords, just hashes in the database...

For the record, the article is not in the source page, I have to edit the article to see it in the edition textarea.

I believe that is exactly what is meant - not the browser "view page source" which shows the HTML source of what you're seeing, but instead in the "view source" tab on the page which takes you to the "edit" version of the page.

I do wonder if a "read only" snapshot of the Wiki could be of value. It doesn't seem like it would take that much work for someone other than Dal to automate download of all of the textual content, and re-upload into an empty MediaWiki. Not as good a mirror as having the full edit history etc, but it seems to me that something is better than nothing when it's been effectively down for > 6-months?

A long time ago, I played with MediaWiki, IIRC there is a special export page where one can specify a list of pages, and get the xml to process/inject elsewhere.

There's an export in the special pages, and it accept categories as input for the pages to export.
Unfortunately not all pages are categorized, there still yet a bunch to do. :(

It exports to XML, but what about the photos and diagrams.

Is there a free hosting for MediaWiki content ?

Yep, using the export works (I've successfully exported quite a lot of pages). Although that form allows adding page names via the categories you can also simply add the page titles into the edit box. Following the instructions here the AllPages special page you can get them fairly easily and I've confirmed I can export fairly large chunks of the Wiki to XML. It'll take a few goes to get the "(Main)" namespace as it seems there are so many pages there that it won't display all of the links at once. I doubt there is much value to archiving the User/Talk namespaces etc, but for completeness it's probably worthwhile and isn't that much extra hassle as there aren't that many pages there.

File attachments appear to be the most problematic bit - however there is some python+perl to grab them here - although no solid advice as to how to easily get them all re-uploaded without installing an extension. Spending a couple of hours writing another perl/python/whatever script could probably automate the upload too I'd guess - I'm surprised they've not already got that.

MediaWiki do seem to have a list of free wiki hosts, although I cannot vouch for any of them. Do people like github/sourceforge support it too? Probably?

As a first test, I've successfully imported all pages except the templates (I didn't think they were that important but it seems they are), and all of the content is visible. I've not yet attempted importing files, but it seems like that isn't too hard to import either (php maintenance/ImportImages.php seems to be what is needed on the import end).

The textual content comes to 79Mb as an XML file, and took a few minutes to import but worked well. All revision history is preserved, and search works etc. This is all currently on a local server, not on anything internet visible. Does anyone have a suitable host?

That's cool!

You could try Exxos, he no longer graces this forum, but I know he was interested at one point.
He can be found on his own Atari hardware forum and site: https://www.exxoshost.co.uk/atari/

Ha :) well maybe one day. Still haven't compiled it in many years though, but at least browsed the source recently.... Ironically, the loss of the q4max wiki complicates generating the docs for a new build, especially as there are issues in the current auto-gen'd docs that need to be fixed for modern browsers).

You could try Exxos, he no longer graces this forum, but I know he was interested at one point.

Yea, I saw he was made aware of my comments on his forum but he hasn't offered to help, and Dal hasn't responded to my PM asking if he had objections to a mirror going up - which with the issues before with Exxos mirroring things seemed wise to get before approaching Exxos.

It really is easy (just took me a few hours and I've never set up a wiki before), so if Dal wants I could write down the key steps and he could create his own fresh wiki that is separate from the AF user list but has all of the content and "just works". This is perhaps the best solution if Dal cannot find time to fix the current Wiki or that is too complex.

If anyone needs it, I could mirror the Wiki on temlib.org.
No ad. No tracker.
I have no experience with MediaWiki though...
