Cooper: It's nice to see people on this forum with ideas/visions and please don't feel discouraged by the disappointing response so far. Ideas need a home...
I would like to take this opportunity to make a formal request to this Forum's big chief - Silver Surfer... and just incase he doesn't read this post, I have PM'd him a hyperlink to it.
SS, I bring to your attention the fact that some Atari-Forum users have an interest in software design, but are being met with generally negative responses from the existing forums.
So in order to accomodate these people and their ideas, (which are of potential benefit to the whole Atari community), I make the suggestion of founding a new sub-forum dedicated to software design and development. This new sub-forum would be mostly (but not exclusively) for game development.
The functions it would serve are: a place where games can be conceived, invented, designed, ideas discussed, tutorials given for/by designers, algorithms thought up, algorithms converted into code, suggestions offered, and potentially useful sprites/ sounds/ graphics/ algorithms/ code fragments that users have made can be openly posted for free use in new software.
I believe the established Coding Forum wishes to remain dedicated to assembly, and the established users of it place an emphasis upon actual code rather than software development. Some persons in the Coding Forum also express concern over the time/energy needed to construct new software. My proposal would be beneficial to both of these complaints:
Through a free and open development forum, software would be created through our collective contributions, whereby the limited time/skill/willpower we individually have becomes less significant to the success of a project. The openness of the forum would allow a greater variety and quantity of minds to contribute.
Now I understand if there are any reservations held about founding a new forum, but understand that not all users are programmers - and programmers do have different priorities and a different approach to software than ideational persons. Ideally the Atari-Forum should cater for all persons, and as moderator in chief, I hope that you can be sympathetic to this fact.
If successful, I request that the code of conduct of the new forum would require users to be SERIOUS about the intention of the forum, to use it INFORMALLY and POLITELY, and try to be RECEPTIVE, ENCOURAGING, and SUPPORTIVE of genuine contributors.
I would very much like to see this happen, and I volunteer myself as a potential moderator. I would also like to request perhaps Simon, Andreas, or Maarten as co-moderators if these people are willing??
