LSD / WAS / AUTOMATION - The Early Years

Postby Marl » Thu Aug 12, 2004 11:14 am

Hi all,

It's nice to see such interest in the hard work of yesteryear :D

I've seen a couple of posts from people showing interest in the early days and I might be able to help out.

Back then I carried a camera everywhere - much to the distrust of many - and have piccies from the early days of LSD, through the partnering with Was Not Was to the formation of Automation.

All the usual suspects are in there, Ozz, Rebel, Vapour, Hal etc.

Now I don't wanno go posting them for the sake of it - "time to leave, uncle Marl is getting his photo album out "

But if anyone is interested they're there.

Oh and if anyone DOESN'T want them posting, let me know.

Any interest?

Only met a few at the Bradford coding conf. - only regularly see (but not really to talk to) Vapour @ the computer fair in Manchester.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

I'll get on it.

I will probably fuzz any clear faces in respect of that person's privacy unless specifically given the all clear.

Dunno what the statute of limitations is on Piracy

There are a lot of people like that.

I started taking more of a backseat after about Automation 100 or so.

Partly due to Employment, an partly due to the group's expansion - it seemed like everyone was becoming a member

We had some fast suppliers, really talented programmers, crackers, artists and musicians. Loads of people doing menus at a rediculous speed and in short, I wasn't needed any more.

No animosity or anything and definately no regrets.

Some of the best years of my life.

Shw - if you do that, you going to have the music from Tony Harts show in the background too? :P

Defo sounds a great idea though...

Hmmm, I knew Marl took that camera everywhere, but I never thought he actually got them developed! never mind kept them.

I am curious to see what is in the Marl archive, nothing too incriminating I hope :D

Well they should at least be pictures of me with hair :D

Marl, where were most of these taken?

I've got a nice one of you giving Wayne Smithson the packer code

And loads of pics of people I swear I've never met - or was I drunk
ozzwald wrote:Marl, where were most of these taken?
England :P

They are from all over, dating back to the late 80s

One's I've found so far include;

Your house - frozen coke, Pic of Neil rummaging through your bin for some reason (1988)
The last Deer Park New Year with Icecream man Joe (1989)
Blackpool Arcade Show - well the after show party I don't remeber going to (1989)
Some place in leeds that I remember going to but have no ideas where it was (like a community centre or club) Hal and Editman and Reb's Nephew were there.
Rob's first visit to our headquarters (well your spare room :D )
Leeds Beer festival with Hal and the Editman (1989)

I'm still looking for one with the LSD t-shirts

Oh and B.T.W. You had Automation T-Shirts?

Where's mine ya bastards

Oh and a piece of Trivia.... or puzzle .. or random history...

Remember this?

Special Disk 100 - Extremely rare

Postby Marl » Sat Aug 14, 2004 12:48 am

Oh and I have that one I took of Ken at his wedding.

He's holding up his favourite wedding present - the special Disk 100 we did for him - wonder if he still has it?

And some people on here thought they had them all

(only kidding, what you got was pretty close)

What happened was for a special wedding present for a friend, Ozz and I produced only one disk 100.

Not one version, ONE DISK, they we dumped our work files and gave this disk to the guy.

It caused uproar.

I forget the exact reasons - but I think panic over the reliability of a single floppy might have been in there, or possible weall got shitfaced at the wedding and trashed the disk - but later Ozz rebuilt a second disk 100 for general release.

I forgot all about disk 100 8O

I can confirm these was a 'one-off' disk 100, as i remember it used the full version of the old man graphic on the released disk 100. As I recall we made one copy checked it all worked and then started from scratch (other than the old man) for the 'official' disk.

I think the menu had a slightly different line up of games, as we were trying to be unique.

We left it up to him if the disk was spread, it appears he did not spread it :?

Hey, that little TV was used to create numerous menus, I used to drag my ST and that screen to work when I was on nights at Leeds City Council. This was the late 80's, the screen was small but the case for the TV was not, so my arm muscles were well developed dragging that lot around.(who said all the lifting of pints, I heard that!) :D

Yeah, the relevance of the post was the connection to Ozz and Myself.

We were Beta Testers for this game on the Amstrad PCW

The Main Bug Ozz found was...

"When you're flying North and you bank to the left, you should be heading West not East"

WHy is is I remember that and can't remember where I left my Keys :?

I don't have a scanner so I had to improvise, the quality isn't great but it's better than nothing I suppose.

If anyone would like to donate a scanner, send it care of Stretford Sorting Office...
(No don't it was a joke)

Rob (WnW) was a very private person - didn't like having his picture taken (and with his reputation you can understand why)

This is the only picture I ever got of him and I had to take it when he wasn't looking.

Sorry Rob

Sorry for the delay, I had some errands

These are just a taster, I had to "film" the photos (in cruddy lighting) with my camcorder and cap it on my PC - which is why they're so naff

Don't use these versions for anything other than curiosity, I'll get some decent res scans for official release.
