Automation, final copies anywhere ?

You can discus menu disks by all those classic ST hack & pack teams. If you have questions, requests or remarks about hackers, packers, screens or just menu disks in general, this is the place to be!

Automation, final copies anywhere ?

Postby exxos » Tue Jan 06, 2015 10:40 am

I have all the Automation menus, They are all the ones I uploaded to funnet years ago. Though a lot got corrupted in transit that way. I think some of them originally game from LGD. I am wondering if those copies from funnet are still the ones in general circulation or if anyone redid new images of them ? I have a feeling Marcer was redoing them some years ago but don't think they were ever released or finished.

I do also have a lot of re-scans of Automation which came form MMS FTP server years ago. Though I found a lot of them were corrupted and unusable. Though there could be working ones in that collection which are not on funnet FTP.

I already hosted them years ago, so the page is pretty much ready to upload again. Though I thought and post if anyone actually did better images as I think LGD overwrote the boot sectors on a lot of menus :?

D-Bug started to upload the complete Automation collection.

They imaged themselves all disks:

(for more uploads, peole have to write a review of a game included in a menu)

Thanks, I didn't know they were uploading them. Probably best just leaving them guys to it I guess.

How it seems, while they doing a great job, they are only on number 148 out of over 500 ?? If they are asking a review per menu, then that's 100's of reviews. I can't see that project ever being completed , at least not any time soon

I know a few people have copied the collection from a actual floppy, though the copies i got , a lot of them didn't work. The ones I uploaded to funnet ftp years ago I think came from LGD before it went down. I think it cost me about £400 in phone call costs as it was all dialup at the time! I since got sent various copies from other people, and merged them into my collection as LGD overwrote the boot sectors IIRC. I assume all the other copies online came from funnet also, So I think AFAIK, my collection would be the only complete copies about currently which are not all the files on funnet ?!

I can't remember who sent me the MSA images years ago, though there was a few people who had the entire collection but one of those people managed to corrupt a lot of them. I think it was up to menu 50, so those remained the LGD ones. While other menus which worked, replaced the LGD ones. I already did the pages for them years ago as I was hosting them. So unless anyone else has master copies about online already (please let me know) I will upload my automation collection once again.

The point is they don't like leechers. They want people to actually play their stuffs so the deal is to review the games on the menus and post a small article/review on at least one title per menu. I did so for quite a lot already but it gets boring if one is alone doing this.

Help them and review the games and then there will be more releases.

Yeah I can understand that. Be it know I have not taken 1 single menu from their site, and really do not want to get into arguments with people about such things. My copies are nothing to do with what they did.

Well, I have some thoughts and experiences related with this and generally about overall situation considering user feedback in Atari community - and I guess that it is very similar in other retro computer waters, and not only that ..
But first, considering circulation of Atari ST floppy images: I started to DL them on all available sites some 10 years ago. In that time speed was important, since such sites were regularly shot down. I managed to "collect" almost all menu disks from "major" crews. But it was clear after testing, checking that some releases are corrupted. And if it was corrupted on one site (host), then almost sure it was corrupted on all them. Here talking about bad ZIP archives, often visible without opening by very small size (under 100KB for instance) .
Today situation is little better, we have some established sites holding really lot of images, and as I see bad ZIPs are not present. And nobody cares to shot down them. TOSEC is available too.
I don't see why D-Bug expects some special treatment - but they always acted like that. Yes, it hurts when you spend lot of hours, days to make something, then publish it, and there is no feedback. This is just how people acts today - DL it, put in your collection - hording instinct of caveman in 21-st Century :D
Of course, there are some who even play it - for more-less time. And there are some who give feedback on forums or in e-mail. And as most valuable, some who play it intensive, thorough. But I guess that you must be fun of specific game to do it. There is lot of other fun today instead playing 30 year old stuff.
Back to so called "final copies" - crews who made them should take care about availability and correct copies - that's my opinion. That means not that they must pay host etc. But they can report bad copies, send proper ones ... Of course, this is idealistic idea. Some just don't care at all about it now.
Fixing errors, problems - this is something what nobody does, as I see. Mentioned D-Bug never fixed Helter Skelter, Forgotten Worlds - and they got error reports for them. I guess that most of crackers did not care about saving their sources, work files.
After some 8 years of dealing with old games, their cracks, original dumps (STX mostly), and seeing too-too much bad things, even in originals , I'm on that we need to get on higher level of collecting - first step in that is taking care rather about quality than quantity :D
Some problems and errors just drag over decades. Like case of International 3D Tennis. There is big progress in imaging originals with new devices as KryoFlux and SCP. But cracks have some benefits in many cases - and here I don't think about easy copying, but added trainers, faster load, less disks needed, then even corrected bugs in games .
And if you visit some official ? - at least named as company sites - you may now DL there their old games for free. And guess what - almost all it is crack  That would be another case of "final copies"
English language is like bad boss on workplace: it expecting from you to strictly follow all, numerous rules, but self bending rules as much likes

The download links on D-Bug Website works fine and it links to Automation 69D.
Can you try again?

This is what I talk about. That AU69D is a mess. First show 1 game list (incorrect), then other one what is correct, it seems. And it is same in version 69Dv2 ! :o If they will not fix it, I don't think that anyone other will ... Me not for sure - too busy with fixing Cannon Fodder
Seeking correct version is waste of time IMHO .

I have uploaded my automation collection. None of those files have been taken from debug's site! Any fixes they may have done to menus will not be on my copies.

Disk 398 I can't seem to get working, but other than that, they have all been tested that they load up on TOS104, but nothing beyond that. There was a span of some numbers which do not work on 4MB machines. So if using a emulator, make sure you select 1MB to be sure.

I have started on reviewing the disks that are up for review (when not doing any democoding).

I would encourage anyone to do the same. Testing out some games and writing a little review about them both is a great read for others, as well as it gives you the opportunity to find some really great games that you would otherwise not find out about.

I don't know how you tested your disks but this one requires 'Accurate Disk Access times' option in Steem.
