You can not write STX on floppy disk - it is only for emulators.

The HxC floppy disk emulator software can convert Pasti images to raw format that you can write back with the right hardware (such as Kryoflux). It doesn't work in all cases, but probably will in this case. IIRC, the protection on this title is very simple.

Would still need an STX dump to try but the link to the STX was missing the file. I have also had some success converting STX to SCP and writing back to floppy.

I looked for STX at Atarimania, and it is removed there because of some error in image. I can fix bad link, but it will not fix bad STX image (what is from Atarimania). So, forget STX image. Use what is available - what will be what you asked in first post "working copy" .

I might be able to fix it. Please post the damaged/non-working STX image.

You can write STT floppy images onto floppies with this: http://atari.8bitchip.info/floimgd.php
Need PC with internal floppy drive and Windows for it.
If that is not good, I can prepare ST floppy image, based on hard disk adapt (what is fully tested), but need couple days for it.

Here is problematic STX image:
Alien World (Pasti Original).zip
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

What's wrong with this image? Didn't try too much, but it works for me.

Converting the STX to SCP or KF does not work. Converted SCP/CTR does not load in an emulator and probably would not work if written to floppy. Problematic STX loaded in Steem though and I could play the first level.

The protection is not as "simple" as I remembered. It uses a custom gap that the converter probably misses. But the Pasti image seems ok. Unless somebody see something is wrong, it should be restored at Atarimania.

Atarimania says that dump is incomplete. And they don't remove images without good reason. So, it would be as in many cases - you need to play it thoroughly to encounter error. I combined my images from multiple sources.

It's funny that you made a STT image, I thought it was obsolete, even considered removing STT handling from Steem!

Because STT is good for it's protection, and HxC supports it too, + my FloImg can write it on floppy. It is not bad to stay close to original.

That's a ridiculous reasoning. It wouldn't be the first time a dump was removed by mistake. The image looks as complete as it comes from factory to me. If it is incomplete (I can't be 100% sure it is not, but so far it is just your speculation), then it comes incomplete at this original disk.

Well, then talk with them. Unfortunately, I can not remember what exactly was the problem after some 6 years. But as said, I combined it from multiple sources, and that seems as something not ridiculous for me.

I cracked the ST version of Alien World for a tutorial (comparing Amiga/ST versions), and discovered that the "END.DTA" file was incomplete because it stopped writing to the disk on track 79 but there was still 30+k of the file missing compared with the same file from the Amiga version. When I replaced the corrupt ST file with the full file from the Amiga version, the end sequence worked correctly - my guess is this is why the Atarimania PASTI is flagged as incomplete/corrupt, however I don't know if this is a bad dump (did the original have data on tracks 80/81?) or a mistake made during duplication/mastering.

Interesting info, thanks. It is possible that the dump is missing those tracks, can't say for sure. Can you reproduce the behavior under emulation with the Pasti image? Or can you point to the code that attempts to read the incomplete file?

Can you please make a dump of your original disk? It doesn't matter if it is not working. A dump with Pasti, SCP or Kryoflux would be fine, even if some parts are damaged it could be very useful. Just make sure with whatever tool you use you do include tracks 80 and 81 (total of 82 tracks). Both sides.

i don't have the original games disk, it had got damp and when used in the ST it would squeak and squeal and mess up the drive heads which then needed to be cleaned so i binned the disk

so basically i'm looking for an ST working copy of the disk

I don't know which of images there will suit you best. It's on you to test ...
And there are other places where can DL ST games online ...

I have bought the game, just wait for it to arrive. I will then make the files out of it.
