Around noon I was looking at a page on Aly's website and saw her Casio calculator, so this got me thinking about one I have from my school days. I bought a Casio fx-115 in 1985 and right now on Ebay there is one for sale for more than I paid for mine. Yes I know about inflation blah blah but calculator prices have not altered that much. I really like this calculator by the way!

Anyway here are a few crappy photos of mine:

So these things are moving from hobbyist status to collector status, which in the future will make them impossible for hobbyists to acquire for a reasonable price. The same thing is happening in the VW world. A hobbyist used to be able to pick up a restorable pre-1968 VW bus for a couple of hundred dollars, but that is changing to thousands.

When I was in my teens doing O level computers and then a BTEC I could do arithmetic in binary, octal, and hex just as quick as I could do it deanery.

Today it doesn't feature in GCSE at all.

In fact most kids cry when exposed to Boolean at degree level.

I have used CASIO calculators all my working life. At times on a mainframes hex still came in handy.

My favourite calculator is my Sinclair Enterprise. Black as night. With a red LED screen that glows like a Cylon centurion's eye....

Talking of silly prices but in the other direction, how about this for a cheap ST and there were three bids too! Would have easily been worth it for the Competition Pro joystick alone...

Like an old school friend to whom I gave my beloved C64 when I got my ST (I actually used to go up to his house carrying it in a plastic bag sometimes to play) - he got a SNES one Christmas and kicked the C64 to death, then told me a thief had broken in and done it. Right... A thief broke into his bedroom, kicked a C64 around for some reason and left without being challenged? :x

Back to those STFMs, damn, the one that went for £0.65 came with two joysticks and two mice, compared to another STFM with one of each, selling for £120?? Bizarre...

You can see the clear contrast in the sellers in the descriptions:

That is exactly right unfortunately...

Anyway here we go again perhaps, another £400 ZX80?

There are some brilliant bargains to be had on eBay at the moment. Mainly as people are getting put off and aren't looking.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/External-floppy-d ... 240%3A1318

Well that's about all I can that's worth looking at.

Just won Carrier Command, Populous+Lands, Starray, and Obliterator.

That floppy drive wasn't retro enough, nobody wanted it :(
I also have one lying around unused because it doesn't connect to my Falcon.

But every Falcon I see with the "Buy now" option for under 300 euro is a goner
before the auction ends. I was tracking one in NL and 2 days after I copied it
in "Follow this item" it was gone, 5 days before the end...

God, I can't believe no one bought that. The Cumanas are the best money can buy. (I already have two, no need for more).

Was that your auction Bonus? If it was, then drop me a mail. :)

NEVER trust women!! Trust me on this one. You can to a degree, but they're scheming nasty twisted pieces of work underneath once they get going. Men tend to be more up-front. If anything I'd say they're more emotional than the women. I wouldn't trust them either though.

Oh I'm so sorry Karl. Don't worry, you're so much better off without her. Come and join us here, we'll cheer you up. :D

No worries on the CC, that's cool. This'll be my 3rd copy now. I recently bought something off of eBay and it was one of the original programmers. It's one of those games I've tried to complete the strategic way, but it always gets to a certain point and then keeps on crashing. Elite is another one on the BBC.

My condolences too Karl. Been through that myself. My first wife surely unleashed all the evils of which Alison spoke. But surely not all men and women are unworthy of trust. A quote from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is along the lines that the line between good and evil does not run between nations, because then you could say those countries are bad, and these countries are good. Nor does it lie between communities, because then you could put all the bad people on the other side of the tracks and keep all the good people on this side of the tracks. No, he said, the trouble is that the line between good and evil goes down the middle of each human heart, so that each individual person must choose between good and evil.

What I decided for myself that no matter how bad are the things which I have experienced, it is not going to make me lose my ideals and my vision of what life should be and how marriage can be.

Best of luck.

John

I've got a 5.25" external drive and a large box of disks for it but it's never been tested as it was a donation from someone else and it's been sat on the shelf for a long time.

It'd cost a packet to send abroad but if you're desperate for it and someone from the UK is going to Outline (as I think you are?) then maybe it could end up in their car? Thinking of either Felice or CiH as they usually go to Outline.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Sounds okay Mike :) I will attend certainly 1 day at the party, so that would be great :)
I have still some GFA sources on 5,25 which I can't acces. I don't even know for sure
if the floppy's are still okay.... Only one way to find out I guess...

That's a really nice quote :) It also reminds me of a nice (and NSFW) piece, "How not to fail at life", which points out that "Human beings are programmed to notice the imperfections of others more than the imperfections of themselves", which is an important thing to consider so that we hopefully learn from our mistakes rather than ignore or deny them.

Both good cause for reflection. I once saw a speaker hold up a sheet with four simple arithmetic equations of which 3 were correct, and one had the wrong answer. She pointed out that obviously everyone zeroed right in on the error and asked why we were so quick to see the one thing the person did right and ignore the other 3 things the person did right. The answer obviously is that we expect perfection and take the good for granted.
