Atari 800XL with a 1050 disk drive. Still got it in the original boxes too. New Atari user by Page 6 was my first mag and my first bit of code would have probably have been;

10 print "Mark is the coolest"
20 goto 10

an Atari stf 1997
had coleco vision ping pong square and duck square in 1987
then tabletop pacman

first code was (1999)???
out 3,153
out 3,38
out 3,110

but beforehand for a few months
I felt if I spend enough time typing
I might just get the basic language editor to make a version of Cubase for me ,
but the syntax error always occurred
and this was because I continually tried ,,,and even believed if I typed "a:\Cubase.prg " into the editor it would make a version of Cubase on disk 'a' for me ....

too funny .(no clue what a command was back then!)

mag-stformat used to always see them in newsstands

and first game would have been galaxian or centipede at our local corner variety store....about 1985 the year I learned the word "awesome"
had exposure to serious c-64 user but wasn't so into the commodores user interface ===run load etc etc

Very first computer was a Vtech Laser Color Computer 210 (http://retrocomputer.umbrellanet.info/i ... ils&id=146)
When I got this computer (1984?) I didn't read any magazines, and the games that I got hold of for it are not worth mentioning. Don't even remember the titles, but it opened the door for me to the world of computers and programming. My next computer was an Atari 1040 STFM.

Sinclair Spectrum +2 - very proud of it too. I remember getting the Action pack add on as a Birthday present one year. :)

First program:
10 PRINT “HELLO”

It’s all been varying degrees of hits and misses since then! :D
Mega"SST" 12, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

I had one of these for Xmas 1981.

My first magazines were 'Your Computer' and 'Computer and Video Games'.

I didn't even have a tape recorder at the start, so had to type everything in for the early days. Then when the machine was switched off, it was lost for good.

First Computer was a Texas Instruments TI 99 4/A, then a Commodore 64, Plus 4, Commodore 128 and finally an Atari ST. The ST remained my only computer for the next 7 years until I bought a PC, I kept my Atari for about another 8 years and only recently bought another one.

The ST was the first computer that I really liked well enough to keep more than a couple years.
1040 STF, Mega STE 2, UltraSatan,HXC Floppy emulator, MiST, FPGA Arcade, plus Amigas, NeXT and some PPC Macs.

Atari 800 (first one in my bedroom at any rate). First computer that was "mine" was an SX25 with 4MB of RAM and an 80MB HDD. I remember that being HUGE after using the Supradrive on the ST.

Sharp MZ-721 in 1983. A simple computer, but quite fast and with a whopping 64Kb RAM. I learned to program in BASIC and a little bit Z80 on that machine, until I switched to MSX a couple of years later.

Edit: Magazines... I used to read a magazine called "Hjemmedata" ("Home computer"), in it's early years it covered all the major (and not so major) 8-bits on the Norwegian market. I typed in lots of BASIC games from listing, these were usually quite disappointing stuff but I have fond memories of a Scramble-clone that was quite good.

I used to use the Commodore Pet and Apple II that they had at school and then we got a Sinclair ZX81 and added the wobbly 16k RAM pack and later a separate keyboard.

Next was a Camputers Lynx and then the 520STfm

Did anyone go to the early computer shows at Belle Vue ?

Philips VG-5000.
I did not really like it, games were better on my Atari 2600.
Next one was a 520 STF in 1988. What a change !

The first computer I touched was an Apple II in 1985 at my school. My father bought me an 800XL with a Mitsao datasette one year later and did all my Basic Programs there. The Magazines I read were K64 and Programación Popular (Argentina), Mundo Atari (Chile) and, well, Atari Explorer, where I drool over the ST ads. The first game I ever played was Basketball in the A2600 and best I remember, Clowns and Ballons in the 800XL.

Atari 520STM with single sided floppy in 1987, my brother bought it.

First game seen was Starglider, played Breakout from Happy Computer 10/87 and MacPan

First code from myself has not survived, must have been around 1990 in GFABASIC.
My brother started with some ST-BASIC before he went into GFABASIC. Most notable is this example below playing the classic German folk song "Auf der schwäbschen Eisenbahn..."

Code: Select all

A STE in 1988 for my children
While searching, I found one of my first programs, when they started learning to count (source lost after one last modification)
Then a game of the hanged man (totally lost)
One on the alphabet and the enumeration of the numbers 2 in 2, 3 in 3 .....
I put the floppy disk here., (Only works on drive A)

Atari 130XE sometime in 1988-89 I think. I always liked computers, even though I didn't have one so I got my first magazine before I got any computer. It was actually the first issue of a local magazine called PC Master that had an article on how to build your own IBM XT clone. After that I used to buy another local Magazine called User until I switched to another one called Pixel. Unfortunately that meant that I missed the listing days and I never got to do interesting stuff on my A8. I took some GW Basic and believe it or not COBOL lessons while I was still in elementary school so I used to try to recreate whatever we learned, but it was mostly algorithms on how to do calculations and stuff.

So first line of code would have been whatever program was first in the 130XE's Greek manual. My biggest embarrassment to this day is that I used to play the Invitation to Programming tape all the time, using CLOAD, but it never occured to me to type RUN in order to see what the program did. I thought it was a very useless tape.
