STart Magazine coverdisks

Postby Smonson » Sun Mar 27, 2016 9:45 am

Hello,

One of the early ST coverdisk mags called STart Magazine had double-sided coverdisks with a single-sided bootsector in order to make them usable on single-sided drives. From memory, you had to run a program provided on the disk in order to access the second side.

I have seen many archive copies of these coverdisks online, but so far none that include the second side of the disk. Unfortunately that means half of the stuff on the disks is destined to be eventually forgotten to history.

I'm wondering if there's anybody out there who has still kept their original disks. In particular I'm searching for the December 1989 disk which contains the source code for the game Avecta 1: Ebora.

Just checked the copies I downloaded with TOSEC and you are right... doh... who did those images?

TOSEC and HangLoose and the other archives all have single-sided disk dumps. I am surprised it has not been picked up before now.

Reading the November 1989 STart magazine, it looks like they started using double-sided disks from November 1989 and you needed to use a program on side 1 to access the data on the second side of the disk:

Thanks for the info. It wasn't a particularly exciting magazine, so fingers crossed they're not all landfill after 28 years!

Wow they made it a bit of a hassle to get at the programs; no wonder no-one has bothered looking into these disks since they were archived. ST Format had a much simpler approach with the side switch program and then the even simpler SIDE_2 folder. Would be a shame to lose the information on them though. There are archives of these incorrect single sided disks all over the place; everyone archiving and no-one ever checked! http://www.atarimagazines.com/software/ ... tware.html http://www.planetemu.net/roms/atari-st-coverdisks

Surprised that I don't remember any of this information. My collection though is certainly not in the landfill. I remember when I renewed my subscription to STart at about the same time the magazine tanked. $80 some odd lost on that renewal. The holding company for the mag kept giving me the run-around. Finally gave up.

Spent quite a bit of time on ebay to acquire a complete collection of mags and coverdisks, mainly early issues since I didn't subscribe from the start of STart. Couldn't guarantee the condition of any those disks I got from ebay, the early disks, but my own should be in good shape still. Yes, I still have my Dec 89 STart coverdisk.

Great to hear that at least one copy of those disks still survives! :)

Interesting exercise in frustration. Trying to bring that archive off side 2 of that disc has so far defeated me. Using the discs own program, has been a failure and the program itself suggests that my STart disc is corrupted, though they admit to problems with this 1st iteration of that program. Though I can see 2 archives on my copied disc, and on my PC compatible disc, and though I can see what is presumably the avecta archive, neither of my internet connected computers has a floppy drive. When I tried to copy from PC compatible disc to computer, the file wouldn't copy.

Tried unarcing the file using arc.ttp or whatever the STart disk program is. Only to find out that starting with that issue, they started using the Heidi archiver and further complicating the process, the archiver is specific to that disk. Which I took to mean that the archivers on later disk's wouldn't work with that disk.

Anyhow, Smonson, hope you're in no hurry. Out of ideas at the moment. If the header of that avecta archive is really corrupted, then I'll never get it copied. I am going to try and use the archiver from a later disk but that's for another day.

Hmmm...Fcopy. That could be the failure in my attempt to copy from ST disk to PC disk. I didn't use it. I think that'll be my next try. These skills are perishable.

No hurry! Thank you for going to this much trouble so far. I'm more concerned that we all might lose part of Atari's history than I am about that specific issue.

I think you're right that a raw disk image would be the simplest option (is that you were going to do with Fcopy? After all this time I can't remember if it can save to a file).

I really appreciate the lengths you've gone to! Please don't feel that you have to get it done by a certain time.

Fcopy? I suggest that you use MSA.

I would like to know, was the second side of this coverdisk ever dumped? I too am very interested in seeing the Avecta source code and have had a lot of difficulty finding the intact STart coverdisk.
