Number of ataris sold over the years?

Postby deeez » Fri Mar 27, 2015 6:06 pm

Hi,

One thing I've always wondered, how many atari machines were produced and sold to customers?
I remember reading in ST Format, probably around 1993, that Atari now had the perfect opportunity to market the new Falcon to its 980,000 ST users suggesting something like a million STs were sold.

So does anyone have any sales figures? If I was to guess, here is a list:

ST (M/F/FM/E): 1,000,000
Falcon: 10,000
TT: 5,000

Like I said its just guesswork on my part and I have no idea of MegaST(E) sales :)

Fredrik.

According to this page http://jeremyreimer.com/m-item.lsp?i=137 Atari sold around 2.1 - 2.2 million Atari ST computers. Note sure if the figures are for the US only or world-wide.

This subject comes up every so often. :)

I've always seen that 2-3 million number for the ST's, with around 20k for the Falcons.

No idea about the TT, Mega STe, STacy ST book, etc,... much lower I presume.

its a better machine ....as its more flexable

but the stbook wins due too its ide and acsi
if you add a back light card cut too size its prob the best machine as a single
with the stacy it has a port for video so .... depends what your doing

what is the last four numbers of your stacy??? serial number

According to this interview:

http://www.stcarchiv.de/stc1993/10/interview-atari-bob-gleadow

13000 to 14000 Falcons were sold by September 1993, with 4164 Falcons in Atari's European warehouse in the Netherlands.

The last total announced by Atari in 1993 was higher than 5 million units worldwide.

Source? I doubt that number, it would put the number of ST's sold above the Amiga, which was more successful. The number of sales quoted from Jeremy Reimer's blog (2.1 million) should be closer to the truth.

The sources are Atari leaflets and some books like Game Machines (6 million for the latter).
The ST was superior to the Amiga in sales for two reasons, it was cheaper and the Amiga really take off until the late 1987 with the A500.
The A1000 was a big failure for C = and this was detrimental to the Amiga for a long time.

but Atari Corp. was public company, right?

so they must fill 10-Q reports? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Form_10-Q

from 10-Q should be visible numbers of sold units.

There is BIG problem with Jeremy Reimer numbers of ST sales (http://jeremyreimer.com/m-item.lsp?i=137).

Here you can read about Jeremy sources about figures: http://jeremyreimer.com/uploads/notes-on-sources.txt - he did not mention from where he pull number of Atari sales!

Here is Atari Corp. K-10 Form for 1989. (note that Atari Corp was not obligate to fill K-10 before 1989.!): https://archive.org/details/AtariCor...nualReport1989
as you can read THERE is NO sales figure in units, only in $.

Further, in K-10 for 1989. Atari Corp. state:
"Sales of ST and PC products INCREASED by 36%, from $218.1 million in 1987 to $296.5 million in 1988."

and according to Jeremy Reimer Atari ST sales:
1987 - 400.000
1988 - 350.000
Jeremy fail to note increase of 36% from 10-K but instead he DECREASE ST sales for 15% !!!

This bring shadow over Jeremys numbers regarding ST sales!!!

According to Alwin Stumpf, President Worldwide Sales Atari, the number of TTs was around 10000 units in September 1991, with 600-1000 units sold each month:

And definitively they sold many more TT than Falcon. 5.000 TT is far away from reality, but I don't know the number.

Additionally above is a number of 5.000 for Portfolio. This is definitively wrong, Pofo sold like bread. Maybe this number is "per week".

1000 ST-Book seems to be correct. After the ATW 800 the rarest machine of those which were in mass production.

(By the way, ATW 800, the number I know is 250, but it also could be 300)

And if they only sold in total 1,000,000 ST (M/F/FM/E) the Tramiels would have stopped business already in 1986. They thought "big". 120.000 per year (1985-1992) would have been a joke for them. Maybe that figure is 'per year'.
Power without the Price. It's not a bug. It's a feature. _/|\_ATARI

For an estimation of the total constructed numbers, there is a statistical formula for this.
See :

Good luck.

My friend used this formula for counting Czech computers at http://blog.i-logout.cz/nemecky-tank-znovu-utoci.php (in Czech but you could translate it by Google). Then there is interesting article about C64 numbers http://www.pagetable.com/?p=547 . If we want to use it for Falcon we need as much as possible serial numbers.

I already said many times before, on many forums, that we need http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html for Atari computers.

I definitively need to make this...

I think it's more or less clear that only about 12000 Falcons were sold (see the other thread discussing the fact that there isn't one single s/n >= 12000: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=24769&p=311392#p311297). Perhaps few other thousands had been produced and/or stashed somewhere but didn't reach consumer market. C-Lab Falcons use a different production year (1994) so it's clear which is which.

No need for any formula here. ;)

Wow, then it is amazing how often they show up for sale. Considering some probably were trashed, they are semi-regularly apparent on ebay and such.

Still, 13000-14000 Falcons sold with an additional 4164 units in stock is the last official number. Everything else are just estimates until someone from Atari (or Curt's next Atari book) sheds some light on sales figures. Bob Gleadow may not have known the exact number at the time of the interview, but I don't think he lied - if he wanted to exaggerate sales numbers, he would've probably claimed that 30000 or 50000 units were sold...

I doubt that thousands of Falcon were forgotten in some warehouse or trashed, Atari pretty much sold everything they had in their inventory when they gave up computers and their older consoles. That's when I bought my 800XL and Portfolio ;)

How many Falcons are still left, is another question.

penguin: ehem and how would you explain the lack of higher s/n's? Coincidence? So it just happens that all of us have Falcon s/n < 12000 and some African tribe has the remaining units?
