Awesome Windows appz

Postby Retrogamer_ST » Sun Feb 19, 2012 7:43 am

The worlds fastest defragmenter. I defragmented C: yesterday for the first time in 1.5 years. It took 2 min 12 sec. That's...fast.

The portable version (no need to install, just run)
http://www.freewarefiles.com/Auslogics- ... 53159.html

The best uninstaller, removes everything that Windows own uninstaller don't. But Revo does much more then just uninstall.
http://www.freewarefiles.com/Revo-Unins ... 32751.html

The portable version
http://www.freewarefiles.com/Revo-Unins ... 57054.html

The best app for handling pictures, far better then anything else and a long time friend on my computer since 10 years. Batch conversion and such stuff is childs play in the this totally awesom app.
http://www.xnview.com/

Don't miss whats the best app you can find, the best file manager on earth and sooo much more. The only limitation in the unregistred version is that you must click on one of 3 buttons when starting Total Commander. Not much of a limitation. ;)

Free plugins is here too
http://www.ghisler.com/

But if you want plugins for just about everything, visit this page.
http://www.totalcmd.net/

Belive me, this app is reason enough to switch to Windows.

Perhaps the best free photoediting program. Make collages, animated gifs and edit your pictures with ease in true Photoshop style. This even beats the crap out of Photoshop in some areas.
http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php

This mediaplayer makes everything else look like the work from an amateur and beats the crap out of all other media players. It's fast, it's run all formats and have more filters and options then ALL other players put together. Pure excellence.

All of them is personal favourite apps that i have been used for quite a long time. I'm glad that you liked some of them. :)

To reccomend a good free antivirus, try Avast.
http://www.avast.com/en-se/index

The free version of avast gives you rootkit protection, p2p protection, mail protection, real time net shield and several other good features. Besides that it's easy in the processor unlike some other antivirus suits like Fsecure for exemple.

To register is easy done within the program, just fill in your name and email, done. You'll need to register again after a year.

I've tried many Anti-Virus programs down the years, but not sure about Avast. I've been using ESET NOD32 for the last few years; prior to this I had AVG and before that Norton I think.

I have been using avast for about 3 years and you get several handy features that AVG offers in the pay version only, like rootkit protection for exemple. Avast is always among the top antiviruses in the big tests, yet free. The net shield scans web pages even before you enter them and warns you if any page contains a worm.

Another good thing about avast is the "sandbox feature". Run any app in avasts own sandbox that is suspected and no danger of getting any trojan in the actual system. A safe method to run suspected programs.

Another good thing with avast is that you don't get any irritating pop ups or unessessary warnings. Some antiviruses is asking you about everything and you must click and click to confirm, not so with avast.

Kaspersky was good but demanding some processor power to run. Same thing with Fsecure.

NOD 32 is a very good antivirus too but then you must pay for it.

For a good mediaplayer that is specialized on playing tracker modules, look no further then XMplay
http://support.xmplay.com/

For the internet radio fan the best radio you can get i Radio Sure, it's free and gives you almost 9.000 stations to listen too.
http://www.radiosure.com/

Need to convert a lot of sound formats? This handy app makes it easy.
http://www.freewarefiles.com/GermaniX-T ... 33083.html

For quick screen captures there isn't any better app then Lightscreen portable. No need to open paint anymore.
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/ ... n_portable

Xmedia Recode converts any movie format to something else you want instead.

Using Firefox? Speedyfox makes Firefox faster by removing trash and defrag fragmented data to optimize speed
http://speedyfox.en.softonic.com/

This is the app to remove any trojans that your regular antivirus can't fix
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

Last resort, when everything else fails, use Combofix (only works on 32 bit Windows)

Using Firefox?

When visiting Mozillas add on site.

Download

ADBLOCK PLUS - Removes all tiresome ads on internet

WEBMAIL NOTIFIER - Makes it easy to both check and reach all your mail adresses with a single click

DOWNLOADHELPER - Download all YouTube clips with ease and save them to your harddrive. Works on other sites as well.

LINKY - Open all or selected links on a page in tabs with a single click

FLASHBLOCK - Block out all tiresome flash. Easy to switch on and off

COLOR TOGGLE - Switch between two different clolor sets that you choose yourself with a single click. I use to use black background on all web pages and then switch to normal white with a click on the keyboard. Handy.

DOWNLOAD THEM ALL - The worlds best download manager

DOWNLOAD STATUSBAR - What Firefox should have featured from start instead of that built in crappy download box. This gives you a handy download bar at the bottom. One of the best add ons.

SEARCHPREVIEW
- Adds a picture of the actual site in the beginning of every search result and makes it easier to see if a site are a fake or not. This add on is quickly becoming your eyes when searching the net. On of the best.

Personally i got tired of Ubuntu pretty fast. Even if i was moderator in a Swedish Ubuntu forum. Always lots of trouble with things that didn't work, no professional apps. When trying to emulate Windows apps all the time that didn't work, i got pretty tired of Ubuntu to tell you the truth. Especially when you couldn't find any similar appz as Samplitude, FL Studio and so on.

The lesson?

It's not the OS itself, it's the programs you use that really matters.

If i had been moderator in this forum i have removed off topic in this thread and post something like this.

Please post tips for Windows apps and stay on topic

Good thing you're not, eh? :D

Atari-Forum: A forum about Atari 16/32 computers and their clones

and wound up in a Windog software section???

Then i suggest that you post in a thread that's about Atari 16/32 bit. A thread about the subject. This is the chat for discussions about everything. You're in the wrong forum section i'm afraid.

Wubi is slower then to install Ubuntu using the regular way. If you want to run Linux i would reccommend Puppy Linux instead. It's more similar to windows and no need to install anything. I wouldn't call Wubi an "awesome" Window app. :D

But you're right, it's on topic.

A good freeware app for Windows I've recently started using is http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

What it does is allow you to temporarily turn off unneeded Windows services and processes to free up CPU and RAM. It's made for playing games but you could use it anytime. It's often the first thing I run when I turn on my more powerful computer because I only use it for gaming and working with extremely high-resolution images.

The program also allows you to make a number of other safe and reversible tweaks to your system that make a noticeable difference in performance.

Thanks for the links Retrogamer_ST. There's some great stuff there.

Oh, and while I have no clue if it's the fastest defrag program out there http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/ is really feature-rich and extremely effective. It's totally free and open-source too.

Thanks for good tips. :)

I remember a similar app for XP that turned off unessessary services to speed things up.

PageNest is a good app if you want to download whole sites to the harddrive to browse them off line. Always good if a site disappears. ;)

Notetab from Switzerland is a long time companion i couldn't manage without. An awesome text and html editor.

Interested in midi?

Look no further then Synthfont
http://www.synthfont.com/

And if you need a high quality soundfont to make everyything sound real, download this one.
http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/

About 200 MB soundfont that sounds lightyears better then windows built in soundfont.

A sample from my own computer using Synthfont and SGM 180
