xbox live ?

Postby Tomchi » Thu Jan 05, 2012 7:28 am

Happy new year everyone !!!!

My 13 years old nephew just got an xbox for christmas and he's now asking for xbox live acces.
I don't own one, and microsoft doesn't seem to say much about what it features exactly ...
So i would be grateful if anyone using this could enlighten me .
Ok, so i think you have to get a gold account, buy some prepaid card for that.
But you can also buy points, wtf ? you have to pay to download game demos and screen savers ???
In your opinion, what games are really interesting (for a 13 yrs kid ) with the xbl ?
What are the good/bad points of the xbl, is it worth the price ?

Thx in advance .
There's no way to happiness, happiness is the way ...

If he wants online multiplayer gaming then he has to pay for the Gold membership or for downloadable content like vehicles, new weapons and levels. Points are used for the later ones or for mini-games.

That's todays gaming world, first you buy overpriced games with minimum content which are not even working properly until patches are downloaded, then you have to use more money to buy content to it :(

Downloading demos is free.

As for Xbox Live games I can recommend Beyond Good Evil HD remake. It was a great game on the original Xbox now with an HD facelift. An epic action adventure with an open world, great story, interesting puzzles, nice graphics and no blood. From Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman.
Atari Falcon - 14MB RAM, 8GB CF, HxC SD Floppy emulator, Micromys v3

Or a jaguar! or an ST or a Lynx.... or a 7800 and a copy of Galaga! Apparently it's better than the Xbox love arcade version!

Only game I might recommend is a Spectrum title called Earth Shaker, really colourful BoulderDash clone!

@Tomchi - get all your points and live access extensions via eBay as it's *much* cheaper than in the shops (at least in the UK it is).

There are some cracking titles in the sales (again in the UK) but a lot of them are age-restricted. So it depends on how mature he is for a 13 year old and how much blood, guts and gore that he'll want to play but if you or his parents allow it.

In the UK sales @ Xmas I picked up 7 or 8 games (all under £8) which will keep me going until February or March .. some of them I'll even buy the DLC add-ons for.

And yes, I spend way too much time playing on my 360 than I do my Mega STE :)
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

we'll start with the free few months access given with the 360 .
i'll check for his game collection, but as he plays with his 7 years old brother, my bet they'll stick on kinect for kids games :p

Maybe it's just me reaching 30, but new generation video games do seem quite samey and not very interesting or original. The last games I really got into was Ocarina of Time (my partners GameCube) - for immersive story - and the GTA series (PS2) for introducing me to the idea of open worlds.
TT030, 10mb/16mb, 3.5" SCSI multi-card reader (2gb CF/512mb SD), Matrix TC1006 gfx card, EtherNEC, Epson GT scanner, VanillaMint | 1040STe, 4mb, TOS 1.62, MegaFile 60, SM125 | Lynx II | 800XL, 64k, 1050 disk drive, XC12 tape deck, MicroLink parallel adapter
