Found out some months ago that a local supermarket was selling their remaining 10pcs packs. There was a shopping cart full of them with a stand, so I took the whole thing and rolled it to the cash desk. I still remember the face of the cashier when she saw me coming. Got couple of dozen packs 1eur a piece which was a very very cheap price down here :)

I went looking for some 3 1/2" floppies last year and not one of the local computer shops had any. It was for installing a server, so one guy said I could *borrow* some off him as long as I brought them back!

Can get them at Staples over here in Canada - I got a box recently but didn't end up needing them. I think it was about $12.50 for a 25-pack.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/04/26 ... _floppies/

The venerable 3.5-inch floppy is still available from the likes of Verbatim, Imation (3M), and Maxell - although Sony's abandon...

Now 720K discs, they're the ones that are hard to get hold of. Bought a box of 50 on eBay a few years back.
If I don't answer or appear to have forgotton then email again, I'm scatty! :)

Both media and drive are going away.
Even if you get pack of new media, they will go bad.
mine always go moldy, due to the climate here.

When I bought my 520STE the guy gave me around 200 discs (some are originals and magazines too). If you want I could check how many I have and I could send to you. Just that most of them are used already and maybe you have to change the sticker on some.

I think blocking the upper left hole makes that drives thinks it's a 720K disk.

You win rocket-dog's Dude of the Day Award for this post. :D

It was a box of 720k discs that failed on me; admittedly they were second hand but I thought for £2 if I could salvage 6 or so (out of 50) it would have been worth it.

I too will be getting a few boxes of 2Mb (1.44Mb) floppies over the next few months.

Lastly looking at modern motherboards I think my pipedream of building a 2 floppy drive box isn't going to happen. Most appear to have only 1 floppy header if at all.

I picked up a fujifilm one. I haven't tried it yet. Will report when I do!

Claimed to be Windows 95/98 and Mac compatible? So who knows!

Brilliant, I can imagine that :) So what did you pay for a whole cart full (if you don't mindn asking).
DD are really rare these day's, HD's well at the firm where I work they also dump them so I could get
most of them. Also ZIP drive disk I have a large collection, some even new.
Loads of people dump these drives too, but the SCSI version is a nice and cheap
solution still. Ans I heard, didn't try it yet, that the IDE version works good on a
Falcon too.

Can't remember the exact price anymore, but they were 1eur / pack which was about 4-5 times lower price than usually here.

Sony not the only one making floppies, so it be another few more years before it finishes...
Also when Sony exit, the price might go up which makes business sense to continue making them.

Once Sony stops making floppies, somebody could create something like this: http://www.c-90.org/catalogue/tapes/Sony It's very cool, and brings to me a lot of memories.

That is so cool. I remember reading Byte back in the 1980s and getting excited (well not excited) about a company that would supply floppies in company colours with silk screen printed graphics/logos. I am easily impressed. Sorry.

Love the cassette database website, thanks for that and yes I recognised and owned a great deal of those. Shame they do not show the cases as I have some TDK, that came in a black glossy clam shell case...very stylish and attractive.
