Which games could be possible on our Ataris today ?

Postby Sturm » Mon Jan 15, 2018 12:45 pm

In other words, what games would you like to run on our old machines if you could ? Please try to be realistic ! (SW Battlefront II would be really overkill  ).

I always wonder what games could be achieved on our Ataris with today's programmers knowledge.

You can list a few games and different platforms (memory is not a problem anymore, as it is quite cheap):

STF : Black Crypt
STE : SOTB amiga perfect, Hired Guns, Ghouls and Ghost (in progress :D )
Falcon 030 : SFII arcade perfect (with Jagpad support !)
Falcon CT 60 (without Supervidel) : Blade Runner, Snatcher

Feel free to comment other's choices and explain why it could be possible or not !

Interesting topic :)

There are bunch of new games (for Win, Mac, iOS, Android) inspired by old games that could be done for ST also.

I played "The Binding of Isaac" and I think it would be well suited for STe.

Example is Lumberjack for Amiga or Flappy bird that is ported to almost all retro computers, including ST.

I personally would like to see some strategy game like Heroes of Might and Magic on Falcon in 640x400 256 colors and some simple multiplayer games (all player on same screen like tSCc Dynabuster) on ST/STe/Falcon :)

---
btw
does anybody have contact with Mr. Pink / Reservoir gods? I would like to ask him if he still have source of Bugger!? I would like to make some mods to game to make it more fun! :) We play it regularly every weekend! It is super fun.

I would gladly buy a version of "BIOSHOCK" in 16 bits for our Atari, in my opinion it is one of the best videogames of all time.
Even the joke of an 8-bit version is great:

Bioshock Atari - 02 (pequeño).jpg

Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy would be quite doable on STE

But it require:

Processor: 2 GHz Dual Core CPU
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better

Definitely the first GTA would be doable on the CT60, maybe even 030 with some compromises.

My son would love Mimecraft...all those blocky graphics but I'm not so sure it should be done! :-)
Bad Mood or Quake engines from Doug Little are probably better already!

I’ve read here that a CT60 Falcon would equal a pentium @90 Mhz or so.
One might assume the Falcon should be able to handle pc vga games requiring a pentium and below ?

If you look at Quake port by Mikro, then yes :) Falcon CT60 can be compared to Pentium PC systems...

With SuperVidel - absolutely. With plain Falcon graphics - say Pentium 75.

I guess it’s a lot of work to port games from the Amiga?
I assume you have to get rid of all the instructions using the Amiga coprocessors and rewrite for plain 68k?
And convert the graphics to 16 colors ?
What’s the process exactly ?

ST's are made for MindCraft. 1st versions, not that 'expandable' craziness they have now, would work great! A slim version on an 800 matches up well. A 130XE upgraded version might be fun too!
Most games that are not FPS can still be implemented on some version of ST.
Many games on 'smart' (ya right?!?) phones look like 8-bit Eastern-Front, a Win 3.1 solitaire, something similar, or a FPS.
ST's and probably 8-bit's can do almost any game, except fps. currently out there.
I'm sure it would take a very good programmer to do it, but there are a lot of you out there!!! I have no doubt!!!

Well, WaxWorks from Accolade ?

This game is possible to make it for ST, because only the graphics of the Amiga version are convertible with relative ease to 16 colors.

Loading from hard drive, a simplified version of Limbo.
Would be a huge work though.

I'd gladly make new Atari ST games, if someone hired me to do it. I have the STs and the Laser C compiler and libraries and some unfinished ST game projects.

Ultima-like Haxima/Nazghul might be a potential port to higher end Ataris:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/nazghul/

(Nazghul is Lisp engine for RPGs on top of libSDL, Haxima is Lisp sources for the actual game.)

I ported it in early this century to ARM of that time, and main performance bottleneck was screen update, because it was using 32-bit graphics. I added 16-bit support, but for Atari 8-bit chunky->planar might perform better.

Midi hook-up multiplayer FPS. It wouldn't even need to be textured (although the ST does a passable Wolfenstein), and the other players would be scaling sprites (lke Corporation, but not as atrociously slow). Or maybe a 2 vs 2 player team game over a serial link, with a split-screen on each machine like Lotus Turbo 2's multiplayer.

Or again, a flat-shaded and sprites 3D RPG, along the lines of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Town and field regions could have textured vertical walls for boundaries. Dungeons would be third-person views of rooms with floating 3D platforms. Viewing angle would be fixed or at least restricted to stop the sprites looking too odd.
