Improving Atari ST Uridium

Postby AtariZoll » Fri Mar 03, 2017 9:06 pm

ST version of Uridium is known as slow and not well playable. Usually people blaming lack of HW scroll support for that. But scrolling self is actually not that bad. What is very bad is slow ship control - it accelerates poorly, turning 180 degrees takes too much time, so hard to play, if possible at all to finish some levels.
I went in improving it. Better scrolling is done by help of blitter. Faster controls needed lot of tracing, code examining.

2 test versions available.
One is for STE, Mega STE. Mega ST, or any ST with blitter. 512KB RAM is enough. Can run from floppy or hard drive.
Selectable start level, so you can try all them quickly.

Other version is with original scroll, just controls are improved - so any ST, STE ... 512K RAM is enough.
Please test it as much can. Feedback is welcome.

This is not final version - I need yet to update sprite draw code in blitter version - because now using whole screen width.
Updated: Your Manta performs a 90 degree roll if you press and hold fire whilst moving up or down. This will enable you to manoeuvre through restricted spaces.

There seems to be an issue with the download at the moment. Does it run at 50 hz now?

Updated blitter scroll version, sprite draw is now full width.
URIDT2.ZIP

I post it here for case that site will be again inaccessible. Includes orig. scroll v. too. And something what missed from pirate releases: HISCORE.DAT .

HAGA version is done too:
http://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/uridium.html

It runs well at 50 or 60 Hz. That NTSC txt. at title has nothing with actual refresh rate. I guess that it is just USA release.

Made some new versions:
Better scroll for blitter-less machines: http://atari.8bitchip.info/ASTGA/U/uridi.php
Needs 1 or 2MB RAM.
With audio track playback during gameplay: http://atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/uridium.html

I shared this thread with Hewson, former publishers of Uridium. They gave positive feedback.

Their old office is 100 meters away from where the Toshiba office (where I work) is today here on Milton Park in Oxfordshire.

If you've not read it, Andrew Hewson wrote a book this year and they are going to publish a Uridium successor Hyper Sentinel later this year.

Thanx alexh. I saw that page already, while looked for some music for Uridium. Will be interesting for sure.
Hewson was UK publisher, I guess, while game - Atari v. is developed by GraftGold. But it seems that we don't have image of UK release available online, only US (according that NTSC is shown on PAL machine). So, maybe someone could help in it ...

Yes Hewson was the UK publisher. Mindscape was the US publisher.
