Postby retrogamerzach » Mon Oct 24, 2016 5:34 pm

anyone have experience with msx computers for games, do they take joysticks or gamepads, is there a way to get a sd card connected to one with old games/software on it ?

I had MSX2 but changed for brand new 130XE... Yep you can use standard Atari Joysticks (Some of them have MSX switch).
But my competition pro joy worked fine. There are many SD card interfaces and IDE interfaces...
For example:

http://msx.hansotten.com/index.php?page=sd-v2-2
http://www.8bits4ever.com/sd-512.html
And more.

Best will be to ask things on MSX.ORG forum. Their community is almost so friendly as Atari is.

MSX2 games was amazing. Like on Arcade machine or on Sega. 32000 colors, AY + FM... Only problem was that I was alone in whole country. So I rather stayed more Atari...

afir this switch is more or less essential. the msx supports 2 firebuttons (in comparism to the st (except mouse))

/edit: and yes 7mhz semi-msx2+ (missing rom. but incl. v9958 :D and 256kb ram ) philips nms 8280
16 colors are enough for this ****** up world

Yep, you don't want to play Nemesis or Salamander with a single button joystick :) The problem is that there's not that good selection of MSX joysticks now, but if you're a bit handy you can easily rewire normal Atari joysticks if they have two or more buttons. I did that with a Competition Pro back in 1986 or so.

Same with SEGA joypads, they can easily be converted but DON'T attempt to connect an unmodified SEGA joypad!

The MSX is a wonderful 8-bit with lots of really really great games. And as matej say, great community.

Here's an interesting project if you like to tinker with stuff like this:

Nice :) Would definitely buy one of these if I had a real MSX with 80 column video. Nowadays I use my MIST instead.

Just a name: Megaflashcart SCC+ SD

http://msxcartridgeshop.com/ (on Flash section)

Main features:
- 1 or 2 micro SD slots: compatible with micro SD and micro SDHC cards
- Supports hot card swap
- Uses Nextor as DOS (native FAT12/16 support)
- Maximum partition size of 4GB
- 512K RAM (optional)
- ROM drive: You can install a DSK as ROM drive.
- FlashROM memory of 64Mbits (8MBytes)
- MegaFlashROM SCC+ of 7MB (7104K)
- Writting process four times faster
- Load and run up to 9 disk images (DSKs)
- MultiROMs up to 511 ROMs
- It is possible to clone the internal PSG sound using the external one.
- Recovery mode:
- Install SD kernel directly from the SD card
- Erase MegaFlashROM SCC+ content
- Erase SD interface kernel
- Erase ROM disk
- Show SD cards information
- High speed transfer (read and write)
- Konami sized cartridge.

Minimum requirements:
- MSX with at least 64K RAM for DOS1 and FAT12 (up to 16MB partitions)
- MSX with at least 128K RAM for DOS2 and FAT12/16 (up to 4GB partitions)

The cartridge works as an slot expander, so it must be used on a primary slot.

All MSX computers have 2 Atari Like joystick ports. Amstrad joysticks or gamepads work very well, although there are many MSX exclusive joysticks and gamepads also. Even PSX2MSX adapters.

I also recommend to get a FM PAC or compatible sound card. And if it's possible an MSX 2 or better computer.

Regards,

Salva

Yes the Megaflashcart SCC+ SD looks really neat. The floppy disk of my MSX2 has been broken for 20 years or so, and I don't look forward to messing around with floppies anymore anyway. So I may just get one of those.
