Frontier : Elite looks Amazing!

Postby sean1978 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 11:27 pm

As an American I had never heard of this game at all until recently. I didn't know a single person with an Atari or Amiga computer growing up.

I'm not a hardcore gamer but occasionally I'll dive into a good one. The last one I played was Skyrim. If I had known about this game when it came out I probably would have loved it.

This video series (I actually listened to it on my phone while I was working on friday) really sold me on it:

So my reward for fixing my basket cast Atari 1040STF will be to play this game on it. I'm not going to play it on an emulator or port.

It will not run fast on a ST machine. The youtube video is probably made on an accelerated Amiga 1200.

It scales with processor speed so the faster your processor the better faster the fps, a Mega STe or up is the best way to run it. You can tone down the detail to get a bit more speed. There may be a 'bug' in the ST version that hides the space dust 'clouds' that you see in the Amiga version, which makes the game slightly less pretty, though annoyingly they seem to be being rendered. A base ST does run the game at a slightly faster speed that a Amiga 500 though (at at least 3fps ;) ). If Exxos hadn't run into issues with Paypal I would have recommended getting one of his CPU upgrades to bump that frame rate up. It's still perfectly playable, however, lost a lot of time to it back when it was released.

It is worth noting this game is compatible with the Falcon & the CT60.

I have one of his 16Mhz booster kits (not installed yet), will this have a noticeable effect on performance?

It works beautifully on my 48MHz Falcon.
Atarian since 1989. Atari 1040STFM, 4MB 520STe with UltraSatan and Unitor N, A dodgy 1 MBSTe that bombs out after a few minutes, and a 14MB 48MHz Falcon 030 with NetUSBee and Soundpool 8 channel DAC. Plus my new MiST!

Yep the 3D routines are heavily reliant on the CPU, so the framerate should be bumped up quite a bit, and should be a lot more playable. :)

I think it's pretty amazing that the game actually runs on an 8Mhz 6800 processor. I read that it was written in all assembly language by a single programmer. That's pretty impressive alone. I cheated a played a bit on my Windows 95 Pentium 233 MMX machine last night. Once I get my 1040ST sorted out I'm gonna put some hours behind the keyboard on that one.

Have you played the original Elite?

And yes, David Braben coded Frontier it in assembler, all 250,000 lines of it!

Btw. On ST one of the more amazing assembler achievements is Ray's Wolfenstein3D rewrite:

(It has great title screen music too. :-))

http://tom.noflag.org.uk/glfrontier.html

Someone has taken the ST version, decompiled it, converted to C and running with Hatari, to make a PC OpenGL version.
I tried to use his old archives to build a cross-compiled version in gcc for ColdFire target, but all I obtained was a black screen in a GEM window.

Maybe some C gurus will be interested?

Every one of my ST's/TT's/Falc's has this on the hard drive. I'm rubbish at it, but it is superb.
