Is this the first one you've done or are there more improved games by you out there?

Cool, need to have a look at that one as well! You should get yourself a little web site for your creations! :)

I haven't touched it since last summer so it will not be finished anytime soon.

Metroid on the NES and SNES are on my top 10 list of all time favorite games! You need to focus on this!!!
Looks very promising!

Hmm strange. I have runned it on several STEEM versions and with TOS 1.6 and 2.06. At the title screen, you need to press the joystick button to get further (but I guess you tried that).

Yeah, pressed the fire button at the cover pic screen but it fills up with gibberish and locks up...

Anyway, tried it with Hatari and no problems with it. :D I know about the jittering glitch on the first level but it doesn't affect the gameplay so I can live with that. All in all, a great conversion!

Edikt: Ok, think it's because Steem (even with UK TOS rom) runs at 60Hz while hatari runs at 50 Hz which Giana STE need...

Indeed Elf with STe scroll would be amazing.
Also Fire & Ice maybe.

And perhaps Supercars II could benefit from this kind of modification?

(keeping aside the fact that the car game the STe really needs is a Micromachines type game : several players on a single scrolling screen)

Problem appears only with my Mega STE. Maybe just because age of machine ? Should wait for more people testing it on MSTE, I guess.
And works flawless in latest Steem SSE.

When we talk about bad scrollers, what next to deal with - as said already: Jinks . it is less known quality game with few flaws (scroll in first place), from same house Rainbow Arts.
http://atari.8bitchip.info/ASTGA/J/jinks.php
It should be easier - not protected so hard, is with regular TOS exec - so can disassemble, reassemble normally.
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

You must do something wrong in the config, when I tried it worked fine at correct speed and I use TOS 1.06UK.

Hehe, might check some of them to see what could be fun to do, but it should be a game that is alot worse compared to the Amiga version or else it's not really worth it. For example Switchblade is not supposed to have a scroller (the amiga version is the same), so there is not much to fix here (except maybe add the amiga mod music since there must be alot of free CPU time in that game).
It should also be a TOS friendly game. It's to much of a mess otherwise.

Yes James Pond 2 (Robocod) and also Addams Family are two good STE candidates in my opinion. James Pond 2 with Amiga sample SFX and good scroller without border would be awesome on STE.

Addams Family is an interesting case since the ST version it has something that the Amiga version lacks, backgrounds  But the scroller is bad on ST and it has a small border on the left side.

And I always wondered if the STE could handle the sampled speech in Turrican 2 that the Amiga has when power ups are picked up. But actually the scroller is pretty good already in Turrican 2 so i dunno if it really needs help..

I'm sure you could find tons of poor ST conversions out there  Once I started a thread about how horrible Wolfchild was but in that case its mostly the lack of tunes but maybe the scroller was terrible also..

Don't forget your Metroid game, I'm looking forward to the finished game

Hard'n'Heavy... this is the sequel to Giana Sisters :)

Never heard of it before. Checked it on youtube and the ST version had the same "scroller" as the Giana ST version. But is it a fun game? Didn't look like it would be that fun.

Yea I know
It's just so much work with the level design and not so much programming left so it's a bit tedious, but need to finish it someday.

Ouch, yes... that's what killed our game Willie's Adventures for the Falcon. Yeah, I know, it's not dead (just 16 years delayed 8O) , Thomas is still working on the level designs and producing graphics, but the amount of work involved in designing levels and producing graphics is easy to underestimate, and it's less motivating than the programming, especially since he's on his own with this as my graphics skills are not good enough.

You need to finish it! It looked good from the youtube videos I have seen! How did you do the scroller in this one? Hardware or with software? I can see that there is a parallax background and this is not possible with the hardware scroller in the STE and I think Falcon is the same?

In our previews we just had a huge virtual screen (like 4*4 screens or similar) with all the level background graphics except the parallax graphics. We used hardware scrolling to move around in this virtual screen. Some time after the release of the second preview we changed to a mix of hardware scrolling and "tiling" (drawing tiles of graphics at the borders of a much smaller virtual screen). This was necessary to allow larger levels and still keep the memory requirements below 4 MB.

No magical hardware scrolling techniques is involved in the parallax scrolling. Just hard work!

But the hardware scroller scrolls everything at the same speed, so how do you make the parallax effect? I know on the Amiga you can scroll each bitplane separate so you can have parallax effects but is it the same on the Falcon?

No, you can't hardware scroll individual bit planes on the Falcon. We use 6 bit planes for the main graphics and 2 for the parallax graphics (hence the few and dull colors). All 8 bit planes are hardware scrolled, and the 2 for the parallax graphics are updated each frame to achieve the parallax scrolling effect. Like I said, there's no fancy tricks involved here, only hard work (for the CPU). :)

Aha ok, I see. I guess you can do the same on an STE, but you would be limited to 8 colors for the playfield so it's probably not the best to do.

It would be great with digi sound from the amiga, that's my dream for a long time

2.cannon fodder
very poor compared to the amiga version
- less colors
- bad scroll
- poor sound
- smaller screen
