Zamuel_a wrote:I found the bug! So now it should work on Hatari and on a real machine! I was accidently writing to one of the blitter registers when I shouldn't and that caused it to crash when I removed the mainsprite from the screen at the time I load a new room when you go into a door. The player is not drawn by the blitter so not really any connection but when you write to registers when you aren't supposed to, strange things happens. :D

I changed the controller alittle since I noticed that it doesn't work so good if you have a mouse connected. Now default is keyboard only. Press the S key to enable a SEGA game pad in the mouse port, Press J key to use a JAG PAD in STE PORT A (not tested so much, so can't garante anything), press K to go back to Keyboard only.

Yo
Could you please be more specific so that we have Steem crash as desired with the bad version?

Hmm, I don't understand? The text you quote is from an old previous version and is not valid anymore.

You should run the version that is named GAME_130716.ZIP

I'm sure the game improved but it's accuracy of Steem that concerns me. :)
You said Steem was wrong in not crashing, so I ask where.

From what I remember, in Steem it was OK to have a blitter height of ZERO, so in one of my first versions when a sprite was outside the screen it had the height zero and didn't get drawn. That crashed on a real machine since the height had to be 1 or more.

OK, thx.
The doc says:

Y COUNT

This 16-bit register specifies the number of lines in the destination
field. The minimum number is one and the maximum is 65536 designated by
zero.
Byte instructions can not be used to read or write this register.
Reading this register returns the number of destination lines yet to be
written, NOT necessarily the value initially written to the register.
Each time a destination line is completed the value will be decremented
until it reaches zero, at which time the tranfer is complete.

It's a bit ambiguous regarding 0, and the ambiguity is found back in Steem source, with some disabled code.
When Y Count = 0, the blitter would do nothing, which seems natural as this value marks "end of transfer".
But if you write 0 before transfer, the blitter understands "65536"!
I've changed that so that you'll get a nice ST crash with coloured screen and 4 bombs instead (and no emulator hanging) - with previous version, of course.

Steven Seagal: a man so determined to accurately emulate the Atari ST that he will lose sleep over it not crashing 'as desired'.

Did somebody already suggest "Stetroid"?

Something original would also suffice :D

He he, well a name shouldn't have any reference to Metroid I think since it will be a completely different game. Just be the same genre, like comparing FPS games with DOOM or so.

Thought that I might give an update on this project. I'ts going forward (even if a bit slow  ) and I have created one more area. I have also implemented so that the automatic palette change technic makes it possible for transparency effects like water.

That looks really cool and is a good usecase for your heavy palette switching technique employed. Thanks for the update!

Wow! I've totally missed this thread! Metroid and Super Metroid are two of my all-time favorite games!

Zamuel, I downloaded what I think is the latest demo of your game (game_130716.zip) and I played around with it for quite some time. It totally rocks, and it's for the STe! :)

Hope you haven't gotten tired of it, because this is some real promising stuff!

It will never stop, but might take a while to finnish. I was interrupted by two other Atari STE game creations (Pacmania, Giana Sisters) so I haven't looked at this so much until the last months. It takes some time to complete since there are hundreds of "levels" compared to a simple game that has maybe 10-20 or so.

great work! it runs perfectly smooth

I was thinking something:

if you already have 8 different colors for each tile row is it possible to make every row of tiles little bit darker towards upper and bottom side of screen? something like I made in photoshop as example? :)
