One of the 'F15 Strike Eagles' had an interesting 2-machine link mode where 2 players on two machines could be the two man crew of a single F15, with one player piloting and the other player being the 'Wizzo' (Weapons Systems Officer / Navigator) in the back seat - quite a difficult and responsible job (and more than one player could manage) with all of the realism settings turned up high.

What I really always hoped for was a multiplayer / single ship version of something like Elite (one pilot plus two side gunners and a tail gunner) or B17-Flying fortress with a full crew of human players - the networking aspect would have been possible via a MIDI ring (like in MID MAZE) but alas, this never happened.

....

That's quite interesting. In single player mode - did the player have to cover both functions? Or was there any type of AI to lessen the load on the player? Was it possible to just play the WSO/navigator in single player mode?

Does anyone know if its possible to do this null modem cable setup over the internet with steem? Some sort of screen sharing would be needed too I guess.
Storm Clouds over the Western Front - my WW1 2D dogfighting game for windows
2D Flight Sims - side scrolling aerial combat games

I think my favourite would be Combat, the classic tank game. :) Haven't played it in a while, though. Bubble Bobble is great for coop.

Does Speedball 2 (Manager Game) count, we used to gather round with pizza and beer and shout at the guy with the joystick to make changes, great fun.

1) Yes,
2) Possibly, there may have been something like an auto chaff / flares / ECM facility to assist the single player.
3) No.

I think it was intentionally weighted so that if you wanted to play at full realism you really needed to get someone to give you a hand, which is how it should be I guess. I have to say I haven't had the opportunity to play it that way since the original ST golden age.

In the original incarnation, each player had their own machine, therefore their own screen on which they could freely move their point of view, so the pilot could concentrate on the way ahead and the Wizzo could look down at his readouts and threat warning displays and scan the sky for bogies and the ground for SAM missile launches. If you got it going on emulators over an internet connection, all you'd really need would be some means of voice communication.

Another flight sim which was quite flexible in its multiplayer link modes was 'Flight of the Intruder'. It was quite hardcore, so for example all navigation bearings given over the radio were with respect to the mother ship (the carrier) rather than with respect to you, so there was one extra layer of working out to do. Even so, I liked the game so much I bought original copies TWICE, first for the ST and then for the PC on which, critically, the joysticks were analogue and much better suited to flight sims.

In that game you could play missions either as two aircraft on the same side or as one each of the opposing aircraft on opposite sides, in the latter case with an A.I wingman on your side. In the 'two on one side' version there was a further choice, which aircraft to fly, the choice being between the titular A6 Intruder ground attack aircraft or the F4 Phantom fighter. If you were flying the A6 you had no air to air weapons at all, so having a human piloted Phantom along to watch your six was pretty neat.

FOTI was also one of the rare games which supported the Gravis Mousestick out of the box - a PC analogue joystick and controller / converter which plugged into the ST's mouse port and gave you proper analogue control, although it also meant that you had to use the stick to do all the 'mouse things' like moving around and clicking on stuff in menus.
