New Joysticks / Joypads for Atari ST ?

Postby marcello » Sat Dec 01, 2018 10:08 am

Hi,
Anybody got a link on where to find new joysticks or joypads for the Atari ST ?
I have found for instance
https://www.amiga-shop.net/Amiga-Hardwa ... ::694.html
but I am rather interested by joypads, as the games I play at the moment (for ex. Silmarils Targhan) require quite exact diagonal selection.

Also, as far as I remember it should be possible to use a Megadrive Joypad on the ST ?

Diagonals is why I prefer joystics!

Mega drive pads won't work on the ST, but making the necessary changes should be simple. Master system pads work out of the box. You could also use playstation 2 pads with an easy to make adapter (I've made one with Arduino).
Also take a look at this video:

Anyway, the Atari style joystick is the simplest possible control device you could make.

There is a company that makes Arcade style joystics that would work with an Atari, but they seem a bit on the expensive side. That's not the main problem though (for me at least), they have the stick on the left side!

You can also find Atari joystick clones on Aliexpress.

Or buy a cheap USB Pad and wire some cabling to the contacts while disconnecting the USB controller.

Vincent Riviere ( atari gcc cross compile fame ) made a whole video in French on the topic of using Sega Master System pads on Atari ST ( in French at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPgUdfkhc0I)

The pads work all fine, but because of a quirk in desing, a pad plugged in the mouse/joystick port, when pressing the button 2, you active the press of the fire button on the other pad !

In the meantime I got some speedking clones. which should statisfy my retrocomp[uting needs for Christmas

The Sega Mega Drive (Clone) Pads from China work fine. You have to Cut one Line to use them in both Ports.
