This was a recent change so as to keep the history of the forum and its threads. It saves people re-editing an older thread and then anyone who's quoted it from looking like they were quoting a completely different post (as one example).
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

It is unfortunate that you had to make this restriction because I often used this option in my personal topics.

Hm, yeah.
Can you get your messages edited by reporting them, or does reporting not allow you to input a reason? (I don't dare trying, just in case it does something bad)

Seconded! Maybe it could be allowed to at least the original poster to edit their first message in the thread?

Well I always edit my original 1st post for my software announcements, with new features links etc.
So users do not have to scroll to the last one to read the new features etc.
So it is not possible now?

Reporting a message does get our attention, so it would work. Yes, you can write a long description for the reason that you reported the message.

Nothing "bad" happens by reporting a message, people often do to report dupe messages etc. and mostly it makes life easier for us moderators.

Never be afraid of reporting a message that needs attention, if you accidentally posted in the wrong forum or posted a dupe or something else, nothing bad will happen and we appreciate the help keeping this forum in order.

It's common practice to restrict editing at most forums. To me it was more surprising they allowed it. The change seems logical.

In the past year I've been active on 10 forums besides this one, and none of them restricted editing with one specific local exception (an auction section). Most forums do have something implemented that shows if and when the post was last edited.

Oh, sorry but this new restriction sucks. It was general practice to always have the latest information/updates in the very first message in many threads. Too bad!

Was the feature to edit old messages really misused to the degree where you had to disable it? If not, please revert this change. I hate when things are changed for the worse without a good reason.

Not to mention the threads which benefit from adding [SOLVED] into their title...

And we're already losing users to Facebook (which allows you to edit your messages at any time btw) and other social media so please change this back if the user's found it useful and made good use of it!

I'm also very surprised and disappointed by this change. There are a lot of threads where the first post has some kind of list, which is updated from time to time. That is no longer possible, and people are forced to read dozens of pages of updates to find the one with the update they are looking for... that's ridiculous.

Also it's no longer possible to remove and/or replace attachments with newer versions, to prevent people using outdated versions.

Not to speak, that this change was made silently, without any notice. Not very kind.

Yes... this is one of the MOST IMPORTANT and USEFUL....
This [SOLVED] tag have saved me plenty of time and I have saved plenty time by zooming into the solution.

This is a rather sad development.. we are like stepping backwards.

It flatters me that you think of me being that mighty... But I am merely amoderator here, this isn't within my jurisdiction.
