Atari Legend is back! Updates thread...

Postby ST Graveyard » Sun Oct 01, 2017 6:41 am

Hello all,

We are proud to announce that after almost 3 years of late night coding sessions and a lot of hard work, we are finally able to release a first beta of this wonderfull project. Everything is here, games, reviews, interviews...and this time in a beautiful fully responsive environment (However, the skin switching did not make it in this release). We now also have an open control panel, so if you create an account, and you are interested in the inner workings of this project, be sure to check it out.

I personally would like to thank Silver Surfer for teaching me the wonders of ajax (and so much more!), Brume for disliking my first layout examples and showing me how a decent website should look, and my Sarah, for still being with me ;-)

I really hope you all enjoy this website in all its full HD glory. If you have questions or suggestions, or if you find a bug, please let us now. We really want to make the site a good as possible for you all. And yes ... there is much more to come! Game downloads are NOT available for now but will follow soon.

...Also don't forget to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (It isn't 2004 anymore!)

Check it out : http://www.atarilegend.com

This is STG, signing of!

PS : Also keep in mind we have cleaned up our user table. Accounts that have been inactive for the past 10 years, have been deleted. An email address is now also obligatory when creating a new account. If you forgot the pwd of your existing account and you haven't added an email address in the past (so you can not auto reset it), just get in touch with us and we will do the reset. Sorry for the inconvenience.

P.P.S : Sadly, yesterday evening I got the message there is a major style glitch in the top menu in Safari in full widescreen mode. I don't have a Mac, so I don't have Safari. The project has been tested in 6 browsers, Iphones, Ipad, android .... but no Safari :-) I want AL to be accessible to as many people as possible so I will do all I can to have this issue fixed ASAP. For now, use Chrome.

What else to say? Thanks for this post, STG :)

The new site looks very cool to us, but don't hesitate to post your feedback (like/dislike something?).

Also more to come really soon, stay tuned.

Haven't touched a joypad in decades, the mobile side looks fantastic on this ancient (pun) Windoz 8 phone! Nice work.

Hello all,

Thanks for the lovely comments. I have gotten a few complaints regarding text overlap op IOS. I hope to solve this in the days to come.

Thanks again,
Maarten

Awesome stuff! Thanks for all the hard work :D

A couple of things:
  • It took me while to realize how to register, I didn't see at first that the registration form would appear on a box on the right side, so it looked as a bug, as if the page reloaded without any change. I would suggest moving the login box to the center of the page rather than the right hand side, as users may expect the main "content" (registration form) to be in the center of the page. I think I'm not the only one to have experienced this (I saw a similar message on Facebook I think)
  • Similarly, I tried to contribute a few entries to the database and was treated with the same symptom, the page reloading without any change. After a while I realized there was a tiny popup message on the top-right corner telling me I didn't have enough permissions. This message is very non-obvious, I would suggest moving the notification in the center perhaps under the menu, to make it more visible.

And then a question: How to gain the permissions to contribute to the DB? I saw the mention of "karma" on profiles, but I don't know how one would improve his karma (I'm was not familiar with the previous versions of AL, perhaps that's why).

Thanks!

looking good, but PLEASE change the v and w characters in that font, they make the whole text almost unreadable.

Yeah that font needs to go really, titles / headings are ok, but not text. It does not scan well at all.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will try to implement as much as possible in the next update (end of this month).

Lynx, to contribute, use the contribute in the games detail pages of the main site.

I have this idea to open up the db of AL by use of API and downloads to excel, json, xml and much more. I am working on this stuff. Part of this vision was also to completely open up the control panel, but for regular users only with display Authorisations. It might sound silly, but I wanted to give an idea of what is going on behind the scene of this project this way, and to get people more involved in the open DB and open source feel of AL. I want this to become a scene project and I want others to be able to use its content in their projects...

Anyway, again thanks for the suggestions, I do all I can, but it may take a while. Lots of ideas, lots of ambition. And I also want to participate in delivering more cool content ;)

The font will be gone this month!

Also, regarding the karma stuff on AL. Please do not be offended by this :-)

15 years ago, we created this Karma thing just to get an idea which profiles only downloaded games, and which people contributed to the site (it was back in the day when bandwidth was still a thing). Anyway, there are lots of people with negative karma now, and there aren't even downloads for the moment. I need to re-write the karma thing. I want to make it more like overhere on the forum. You can still get karma by leaving comments, writing reviews, adding game submissions. But it needs to be rewritten into something fun ... gamefication stuff. I will do this, but it is no priority for now.
I just couldn't remove all this, don't ask me why, I take pride in what I make :-) So I linked some Pie diagrams to all the karma data ... for now, because I think it is cool ;-)

I just realised my font comment sounds a bit negative. I should have added: well done on all the hard work it must have taken to recode the entire site! Believe me I know whats involved :) Good luck for the future - AL will be seeing regular visits from me.
