If you don't get anywhere with the support ticket, then try my VPS and just upload the forum onto it, then get a few people to log into it and give it some abuse for a bit.. that "copy" of the forum does not have to go live, can just access it from the VPS IP address.. I think it will prove then if its your VPS package or not.. My VPS has ubuntu 14-64bit on it, its got FTP, SQL and the rest installed, im only running a proxy on it (not even using that) but you can install a different linux flavour anyway as I brought a year VPS with another company anyway.. So its not in use.

Unless I'm missing something, there is no real memory usage at all by the tasks on my box

Looking at top:
1) You need a minimum 6 GB swap partition on this box. Never use less than 2GB swap.
2) I'll bet grep is eating your lunch (something is probably recursively grep'ing files across directories).

edit: Hmm. Or rather, it seems to work from my home, but not at work. I just VNCed home to test "at the same time" - which seems to indicate that the external IP of my employer is banned. That I can't really understand ;)

In all the discussions on resource exhaustion I don't understand why sometimes I get a 403 Forbidden as reply when trying to post or logon.

(As I got just now when trying to post this)

It takes about a hour to read a post and reply to it these days   Though it seems to have random speed boosts, assume when everyone gives up, and logs off, I think the forum speed goes back to normal then. Though as I am typing, the forum seems ok again.

I normally read the forum between midnight and 6am UK time, and it has been good at those time.
When I read the forum at UK day time (my night time), it usually slows down and takes minutes to display a page.

Not counting my chickens just yet. MySQL was creating a 23GB cache file in /tmp which was leading to the server crapping its pants. As far as I could tell, this query is part of the statistics function on the board.

Since disabling statistics, things have so far been behaving.

Please continue to report your findings. Each piece of information is valuable.

Thanks for your patience.

it went dead about 11pm last night, was still down up until about a hour ago. Though I am at my girlfriends now on a different ISP, but I was also getting PM's for a couple of hours to my email via the forum, so it must have still been working in the USA. I was going to try my NY proxy but the things down for some reason. But next time the forum goes down, ill try going via NY to see if that works.

If you're suspecting resource leakage, you could check is processes memory usage with "smem" tool (PSS) column (in smem package).

If that doesn't find out the problem, start taking regular snapshots with this tool:
https://maemo.gitorious.org/maemo-tools/sp-endurance

It has separate script for taking snapshots of all resource usage information in the device, and couple of scripts for doing from those snapshots HTML reports & drawing graphs of all possible resources that could be leaked: process & kernel memory, shared & locked memory, file descriptors, CPU, network and other IO, errors in syslog (mostly relevant for phones) etc.

The snapshots can be very large, depending on your syslog size, how many processes you're running etc, so I would recommend using large enough snapshot internal that when the problem starts to show up badly, you have something like ~20 snapshots. That should be enough for showing whether there're any kind of resource leakage trends.

(If you want to package the tool, RPM & Debian packaging files are in separate branch in git, but at least Debian packaging is a bit behind master. If you're interested, I can provide a patch to apply to packaging after merging master to packaging branch.)

It seemed to be running reasonable well over the weekend. Today it seems to go for random slow downs like before, but generally only seem to be waiting 5-10 seconds. Before it was more like 5-10mins.

EDIT1, and since I said that the forum has been going painfully slow again
