BeGEMeD, a Bejeweled / Diamond mine clone for the Atari.

Postby BoNuS » Sun Mar 10, 2013 11:28 am

I thought it was time to show you all what project I'm working on :)
It isn't finished, but it's getting there.

BeGEMed, a Bejeweled / Diamond Mine clone for the Atari STE, TT and Falcon 030.
It is based on the original so no special gems yet.
Check it out, it is a small pre-view of whats coming...

And still looking for a musician for music, just read the text on YT :)

Greetz,

That's a very nice looking version! Awesome graphics. Would be nice to have those special gems indeed 8). I guess touch controls won't be implemented  I play these kind of games a lot on iOS and Android.

Atleast STE because of the fact using YM chip sund and Samples at the same time.
I can't get it to work on a normal ST :( But I might do a version using either music or samples.
Also the scrolling doesn't go smooth but I could also use another way to switch screens.

So not all hope is lost for the ST, I know I would do a lot of people a pleasure making it work
on a plain ST. But first I will try to make it work on the "higher" systems. Also the TT which
most games seem to forget. And I have one here so I can test it on the real thing ;)

Indeed looks very good. Also play that a lot on the imac an ipod. What coding tools are you using?

Thanks, never thought it would like this but the GFX guy Carnivac really delivered awesome work for me ! He's a professional so
he knows what he is doing. Special gems, well there has to be something left for a version 2. Thats how the original also
evolved on the PC/phone/tablets.

Plus it's a little harder to program, so if this version works okay then the next step.
I also play it a lot on facebook (Blitz version) and thats how the idea started. I was wondering
why it wasn't on the atari yet. And since nobody else seemed to have plans it did it myself :)

Well I guess you favorit ;) GFA basic, was planning to keep that a secret for a while to be honest.
People think less of this language, but you can do a lot with it.

You the man! :)

Sorry to cause you to reveal that early. However, of course I disagree with the general consensus that GFA is a bad programming language. Its true the original has hidden line-a calls in places it should not and that's usually why it gets a bad name. However, its it is possible to make a clean app with some discipline. If you need help in that area do not hesitate to ask or PM me.

Still working with the 3.6 TT version. Tried to use the GBE but never got the hang of it for some reason.
Would probably give better code I guess with the optimised libraries you made.

GBE is not made for plain TOS or low rez. It was developed on a Hades060 running MiNT+NAES+Thing at 1280x1024. Its aimed at the high-end user and pretty much a no go without MiNT and a good AV Server like the one built into Thing Desktop.

However that does not mean you can't use the old editor with the newer library and compiler at some point. They are not optimized per-say, but many of the bugs from the original library are fixed. I would not worry to much about that until you are 100% happy with the project.

Keep at it, it looks awesome in the video.

I have been thinking lately that it would be nice to have a bejewelled-type game on Atari. Now you make my dreams come true!

Judging from the preview it does miss a gems-falling effect, but it's great so far. I'm very impressed.

Yeah, I know what you want but I had to "cut some corners" there I guess.
Also want it to work on 8Mhz machines and then speed would be an issue.
So no real fancy animations, but who knows, if I find the time (to make it and in the CPU)
then I might give it a try...

This is a great looking game! Have you got someone working on the music yet? Perhaps yerzmyey or !cube have something in their libraries that will suit?

Oh really nice! Great to see a match3 game appearing on STe. :)

Is tile switching/falling animation planned?
[EDIT] Oups, you answered about that in an earlier post. ;)

We think alike I see

I used to play the first Bejewelled on my old Palm Pilot. It used a Motorolla 68K based CPU (around 16mhz). It did have the option of gem switch/falling animations but I think the Palm had the advantage over ST as the CPU was a bit more advanced and the graphics were only greyscale (8 shades?). It also had the more CPU-intensive option to have the gems fall asynchronously instead of in a big block. Wooo! :D

I still play Bejewelled 2 on my newer Palm almost daily. I've been playing it for close to a decade now! The soundtrack (by demoscener Skaven) hasn't gotten old yet!

Anyway, I'm quite excited to have BeGEMeD steal my time as well :)

Indeed Skaven did a nice track, totally fitting the "atmospheric" mood of Bejeweled2.
http://modarchive.org/index.php?request ... ery=156184

--------

Also if "falling" animation would take too much resources, maybe just the tiles switching one could be done ?
I think Cooper did this in GFA, some of his tiles games. [invoking Cooper]

Thanks all, well still working on the GFX at the moment.
Nobody yet for the music (.SNDH format is what i'm using) so any if you have a tune or 2 that fit
the atmosfere or want to make them :D
Homepage had a little update too.

I also had that track "Beyond...", it is AFAIK the original, but way to big to use
on a STE :(

Tiles swapping will be looked at asap ;) At he moment I'm looking into how to detect the right machine.
With a little help from SWE I'm now checking out the cookies from the different machines so I can
set the screen res and detection the right way. All in all enough to do for me :)

Sure I can work on music for your game. :)
I got stuff to finish shortly but after that (next month), I would have time for this. If it's not too late for you.

Some time in the future, when you finish this game and release it, it will be a very good day indeed

Also, thanks to DMA for volunteering his talents.
