Hi,

no no - I mean the stuff Paulo was talking about.

Image

If You can see the button.

Sample_freq would mean "Fsampl" button = Frequency of the Samples.
I was wondering if I change it in order to fit loops (it might be possible - sounds reasonably), then whether such an option saves automatically, or should it be manually set every time I load the song to play/record it.

Hi !

Well, i feel     ...

Of course the samples frequency corresponds to the FSAMPL button  ...
I was talking about the right stuff but not talking about the button.
That value is saved in the Hextracker format as the Volume/Quality parameter as these things among other stuff were improvements to the Protracker standard.
You can check in the documentation:
"

Yupp - the HexTracker works like gold. :)
I torture this program with my 520ST 4Mb. :)
That's what nowadays we can do on YM chip thanx to Paulo - http://ym-digital.i-demo.pl/YM_DIGITAL- ... ations.mp3 :)
New set of songs (14 of them) should be soon on our Atari site.

Hi !

Have a try at the update i attached.
Copy the two files to the Hextracker root and run the 844z PRG.
These files force the disabling of the shadow addressing at the YM2149 address for all cases as it is done for Falcon.
For the normal ST it is not interesting as it is slower.

If this is not the problem then it is another hardware conflict with you special 030 board.
Did they provide any documentation on how the ST program could recognize that this hardware is active and what the hardware memory addresses they use or that might conflict ?

Bye,
Paulo.

No, no special documentation that I know of - it does have a compatibility mode, where it drops down to a stock
68000 CPU and TOS 1.4, so I've got that if all else fails.

But thanks for posting this, I'll try it today and report back. I really appreciate the effort. :)

Hmm, You say You have 40mHz on STacy? Most interesting.
I wonder how good quality would go from YM + STacy + 40mHz CPU + HexTracker.

8mHz and 6 channels on Hex give max. 23kHz of quality.

Paulo: Is it possible that (on such a huge CPU) the Hex could perform far better? Like..... 50kHz with 6 or even 8 channels?
That is really interesting problem to me.

DarkLord, please let me know how the "Z" version does work with Your machine! :)

Thx dude. The album will be half/half - Factor6's songs are 4ch and made on ProTracker_ST (**STILL** - recorded from Paulo's player, hahahaha), and my songs are 6ch and they have been made with HexTracker.

So - the Paulo's spirit will be flying all over the album. :)

Yes, its a 68030 running at 40mhz, with a 40mhz 68882.

But unfortunately, it still doesn't work. I dropped both those
files into the folder where I have Hextracker unpacked, then
started the 844z program. Still 2 bomb crashed. :(

I've run Hextracker on some other machines here (8mhz though)
and it runs fine - its great software!, so I'm sure it's just some
thing or the other about the PAK 68/3 board that's causing it
problems.

Thanks for trying.

Hi !

Well at least we know that the problem is not related, at at least not only related, to the shadow addressing.
If i have the time, i will provide you with some test programs to try to find out what it is.
Bye the way, do you know a bit of 68000 and/or work with a debugger ?
If you do you can try to find out what is going wrong in the init phase of HMIN844.PRG as the source of this is included in the Hextracker package.
You can use any debugger like Devpac MonST. Hextracker was built using Devpac 1.24.

Yerzmyey, great music, congrats.
Hextracker will take full advantage of all the CPU power it can get.
You can test it under STeem with virtual machines where the CPU can go up to 128 MHz.
A 32 MHz virtual machine allows 50 KHz with everything option on no matter the number of voices.
A 16 MHz Mega ST can play 16 voices at 30.7 KHz instead of the normal 10.2 KHz with an YM output ou 14 voices at 50 KHz STE output.
A 24 MHz virtual machine will reach the 50 KHz.
For 030 machines or kits with some local memory around the CPU it can go even faster but it all depends on the memory timings. The number of clock cycles to access the memory is crucial.

You know understand why it would be interesting for DarkLord to have this running with his expansion kit ...

Bye,
Paulo.

I tried Hextracker v0.837 from 2011 with Hatari using following options:

Code: Select all

hatari --tos etos512k.img --machine st --cpulevel 3 --cpuclock 32 --fpu-type 68882 ./hext837.prg

And at least that worked fine.

(Hatari doesn't support 40Mhz, only 8MHz multiplies, that's why I used 32Mhz.)

What kind of TOS that uses?

Using otherwise the above options but changing TOS to v2.x or machine to TT and TOS to v3.x also worked. However, changing machine to Falcon and TOS to v4.x stopped Hextracker at startup, after this point:

Code: Select all

GEMDOS 0x4B Pexec(0, "C:\HEXT837.PRG", [0]"", 0x0)
GEMDOS 0x2F Fgetdta()
GEMDOS 0x4E Fsfirst("C:\HEXT837.PRG", 0x17)
GEMDOS 0x4F Fsnext()
GEMDOS 0x4B Pexec(5, 0x0, 0xf730, 0x0)
GEMDOS 0x3D Fopen("C:\HEXT837.PRG", read-only)
GEMDOS 0x3F Fread(64, 28, 0x1c944)
GEMDOS 0x3F Fread(64, 2147483647, 0x1c944)
GEMDOS 0x3E Fclose(64)
GEMDOS 0x30 Sversion()
GEMDOS 0x4A (Mshrink)
GEMDOS 0x20 Super(0x0)

Latest Hextracker v0.844 doesn't start up under Hatari Falcon emulation either (even when using normal speed). Is Hextracker supposed to work on real Falcon?

The PAK 68/3 board uses a modified TOS v3.06 (by Holger Zimmerman).

As far as I know, the only modifications he did changes something so
that it will boot up with the PAK board.

Thanks.

Will that version of TOS run in Hatari? is there a dump available to try?

Hi !

If you check this thread around May 2011, you will see that there were some modifications done to have Hextracker run on Falcon thanks to Dr. Typo. especially regarding the video context saving, setting and restoring.
There were no changes to this part since then.
Lat version 0.844 has only 2 new lines of code compared to version 0.843 .
So if this ever did run on Falcon, it still does.
Nativ has a Falcon, so he can say if it works there or not.

Bye,
Paulo.

After profiling what Hextracker does... The only thing it does, is loop the 3 instructions starting at $038b06 here:

Code: Select all

$038afa : 41f8 8205                            lea       $ffff8205.w,a0
$038afe : 0308 0000                            movep.w   0(a0),d1
$038b02 : b240                                 cmp.w     d0,d1
$038b04 : 67f8                                 beq.s     $38afe
$038b06 : 0308 0000                            movep.w   0(a0),d1
$038b0a : b240                                 cmp.w     d0,d1
$038b0c : 66f8                                 bne.s     $38b06
$038b0e : 4e75                                 rts

(While TOS side runs interrupts and some other stuff.)

Video address counter high is in odd byte of word at $ff8204, so I guess above is trying to check when that changes, I just wonder why it does word access at odd address to get a byte. Secondly, why that would change, and why Hextracker is waiting on it?

This procedure just waits for the vertical blank:

***************************************************************************
* PROC: QWAITVBL
***************************************************************************
qwaitVBL:
lea $8201.w,a0 current video memory start address
movep 0(a0),d0
lea $8205.w,a0 current video memory address
lwaitVBL_0
movep 0(a0),d1
cmp d0,d1 wait while both are equal
beq.s lwaitVBL_0 (top border ? )
lwaitVBL_1
movep 0(a0),d1
cmp d0,d1 wait while they are different
bne.s lwaitVBL_1 (screen or lower border ?)
rts

This proc is there since 199x.
Only real HW addresses are accessed: $FF8201, $FF8203, $FF8205 and $FF8207.
I remember something about the MOVEP instruction that was not kept by Motorola but i think it was for the 68040 and that this opcode was then implemented by SW or something like that.

Thanks. It seems that calculating this register value on reads (like ST/STE/TT code does) is TODO in Hatari's Falcon/Videl emulation for some reason, it just returns value last written to this register by emulated code. I mailed hatari-devel about that.

Hi DarkLord !

I attached a changed version of HMIN844.PRG.
Please replace you existing one and run it on your Stacy with the 030 hardware and tell me which letters you can read before the Bus Error.
If the program goes through like with a normal ST or Stacy, you should read CMDVFTL on the top left corner of your screen. You can check that with your compatible mode.
If not may be you can only read some letters or none at all.

Bye,
Paulo.

Okay, just tried "HMIN844".

It did not crash with 2 bombs, but it didn't run either. It acted like
it was going to start, cleared the screen with a small graphic in the
upper left corner (didn't last long enough to really tell what it was)
then it went back to the desktop.

Thanks for trying.

PS Are there any known ACC/CPX and/or AUTO folder program
conflicts that you know of? I probably should clear everything
and try it "clean".

I was wondering. Can this machine do what Falcon does - start/boot with the Control and then - "Install devices" - and _then_ go with the tracker? Maybe this could help indeed?

It did not crash with 2 bombs, but it didn't run either. It acted like
it was going to start, cleared the screen with a small graphic in the
upper left corner (didn't last long enough to really tell what it was)
then it went back to the desktop.

Thanks for trying.

PS Are there any known ACC/CPX and/or AUTO folder program
conflicts that you know of? I probably should clear everything
and try it "clean".

Hello again !

If the program does not do anything that is odd.
May be there is a file missing.
Please try this attached zip that has all the files needed for the program to work: 2 code files (.PRG + .EXE), 1 table file PSGTABST.BLK, 1 MOD file ART_HXT.MOD. The two other files (Quartet table and source file are not required but do not harm).

Bye the way, i know you have a Falcon. Does Hextracker 0.844 work on your Falcon machine if you did try ?

Regarding the PAK board, there are a lot of possibilities to have the program not running especially if they added some exception vectors to the Interrupt Levels not used by the standard ST. It is dificult to guess. But if that HMIN program does not work and leads to a bus error before it starts to play anything then we should try to find out where that bus error comes from.

Bye,
Paulo.

Okay, grabbed that and ran it on my PAK STacy.

Attaching a couple of pics:

So you can see just what it did when I ran it.

BTW, I've not tried it on my Falcon - but I will and report back here later.

Thanks again for trying to get this to work.
