I am interested by a ram card for my Falcon. Would it be possible and with which delay ?

had the idea to make some flat 16MB well 14MB boards for the falcon
it would be for ease a simm free design
just the same way as i do for the stram boards in the TT
reuse the chips from 16MB fast page 60Ns simms {8 chips in total}
add some caps and its really easy to make a board
i can add jumpers to allow restrict to 1 2 4 8 mb as jumpers
using the same ics
if i get 30 people who want them ill make a batch of 40
if i get 20 ill make a batch of 30
so... the cost will be i think 20 bucks for the board with the headers and about 4$ a simm from the states inc post
as bulk this price will only get lower
perhaps exxos can also sell it on his site
anyway
its a good idea
a quick batch of 30 boards can be populated and tested easy
using a custom ttl tester so does not go near my falcon
so post below your interest and if its ok ill make them
i will not need cash in advance but those taking one
will be expected to make a donation of 1$ to funds over and above the cost inc post
~ 30$ max i want as a target
ive already done the double sided pcb in proteus and its cool
i think a board only price can be had for people with a spare simm to chew up
want to see

pm me

so i have verified the design and sizes
ive found the standoff strips for the two memory headers
and ive got two 16MB simms as donors tested and stripped to chips

so ill order 10 pcb

this upgrade just adds a flat board with the chips flat
i was wondering as i have only power on the lower plane
people would like me to add a pad set to the pcb underside
to allow a user to then mount a plcc adapter too then also plug into the rom socket to break it out for flash rom etc..
i dont see many using it
but it can be added free and headers and the plcc plug in added

what do people think

so the plan

i will find some new old stock of the right 4bit dram soj chips i want to use new ics i think the fail rate will be lower

i need 8 ic's per board £4 or so 50 p each??? i hope if i buy say 100 off to get a good price for 12 boards
a pcb £3-4 max
2 connectors 1x50pin 1X30pin £1-2max
16 smd 100nF capacitors 1x 100uf 10v £1 max

£11 +profit and board donation postage

so perhaps a good rate would be £35 a board
dont forget you dont have to mess around with simms
metalwork or jumpers
just plug it in

i would make additions to the board so you can mount a plcc adapter too it to break out the rom data etc pins to the sides
but as yet no body asked for it and when i mentioned it i got no clear answer as to its need ???

i would let me know if you would like this addition
as i plan to just add the pads anyway and let people choose to solder the adapter on or not
i think it is also quite tricky to align and much care would be needed

tell me what you think

here is the completed pcb and schematics pdf / project files for proteus vsm you can load into their demo on labcenters site

eventually got it too route correctly
now!!!
tidy phase two days {{ completed :) }}
where i make it look pretty and work around any miss tracking
widen what i can in relief try avoid washing effects
dont want them to dis in the etch {add thicker tracks where pos and balance the ground planes}

proteus vsm router is mega stupid
and i prefer to route it by mind as i did here
no auto route it just does not work as well as a brain !!!!

youll notice the chip sequence is 43215678
as doing it 12345678 isnt possible
9 hrs so far and plenty of coffee
its sad when you cant add a via under a top side pad {vcc or ground}
i would like to do this but cant

even v8 is poo i use v7.1 sp0 its where my license ends v8 is terrible they stone washed the app...

5 parts

lots of solders , 1xpcb ,2x connectors, 8xchips , 16x bi-pass capacitors 1X electrolytic

28 components a lean build

talked to a FAB plant in china today {last night} and he quoted 75$ to make 50 board with 1 sample sent first then 50 board to follow on approval postage needed added $20
for $75
this is a good price

roller tinned drilledand thru plated double sided the silk on top side on glass fibre board
takes 10 days to deliver the final boards
no changes needed they can do 6th tracks easy if all goes well ill use them for the magnum + ide tt boards

EDIT:
£87 quid well omfg i intend to supply it tested to go for £35 max or bare pcb for a 5er max or a kit of parts for less say £25 max.,..
ill make it as cheep as i can but 87 quid is not acceptable
man its an atari ram board and the chips on it are 80ns refresh and old tech
to make a falcon stand up you need to fit a 90ns tos4.04 eprom windowed
otp chips i find poor quality in general
and 60ns fast page dram ram like ill use on this board new old stock
also you need to adjust the solder pads on the left of the falcon pcb to trim the wait states for rom and ram access
then prefetch works faster etc etc

was thinking of taking pre-orders perhaps deposit based
then its fair and a waiting game for soldered up 24hr burned in
and tested fully units as is right with these machines 030 has to be cared for

perhaps another member can help me sort this out
and control the cash and orders
freeing me to do completion of the TT board
ill supply order details etc and etc... i just need a bit of help :roll:
this time of year im skint
ill manage to order a 1 pcb tomorrow but past that its a waiting game till my garden season starts again
its so wet perhaps jilember ..... :angel:
ive sourced 128 of the right ics as blocks of 10 boards chips {failed chips etc }the guy has 10,000 of them so no issues just what to order qty wise buys
i have a simm with 8 and 64 ics the same in a silver badg ill use reclaimed only for the test pcb
other parts are not a problem i have stocks of connectors for 10 boards + and smd caps i have reels 10000 + of

can someone test the sizing of the board please
print out the bmp etc :coffe:

i just wonder if makers supply there units 24hr burned in
if not then i would ask why they put your hardware at risk of damage from chip fail

can be life or death within less time than 6 months :!: :?
with me life or death is not acceptable so all units must be pre burned for fitting to older hardware
its the least you can do as a re-maker

you must power on ics chipsets etc for 24hr atleast then power it down for atleast 24 hrs
to harden the ics

i plan to add vcc and ground for 24 hrs
then test for 12 hrs each unit both tt and falcon memory boards
before testing with a machine

doing a final look over the cadcam
and pictures and silk screen
and deciding the process

for instance i can get plain vanilla double side copper pads roller tinned and resist coat silk screen from china
in small runs of 10 per month for five months for 200$ a batch this is cheep some £7.500 or something0
and this way i can tweak a small batch if i find a blunder
or i can order one and test then get FAB boards really good gold plate and thick screen coated and silkscreen
for euros 350 included 1 sample board in advance of production

i think its the 350 euro one for me and ill wait a few weeks then make the order
not gettin any help to make it happen so im in no hurry :|

whats the point in me making the design i fab'd the drawing of to boards etc etc

let this guy sell them
if you want too make your own board go for it the cad cam is there

no time for this

i will lodge the board design with a known pcb maker
it costs euros 8 per board +post nice gold plated nickel tin and very nice made boards
so if you feel like making your own you can order a board for less than a ten euros
inc post and populate it with two sockets 4 or 5 caps and a an old 16MB fpm 60ns 72 pin 5vi/os simms chips
or buy 8 on ebay for $2 from ebay.HK or .fr
its not worth it for me too make falcon memory so many others do lynxman is the best bet keep him going
i want too fully concentrate on the magnum TT boards

what i do with old simms is heat them up slowly to 230 degc {domestic oven temp}
then hot take them off the simm at 200 deg or less old lead solder melts
and place them back on the same tray
then cool them, down slowly!!!! {turn the oven off and dont open it till its cool less than 70c}
its sharp changes in temp effect chips chips dies melt at like 400 degs or more depending on the process
dram is cooked at 350 deg for 50 mins before being soldered on or placed
same thing its place solder these old processes used
most chips you must anneal to 125deg c atleast for 24hrs before soldering
so ....

Hi,

I am a newcomer to the atari forum. I found back my falcon 030 I bought in 1993 and I am looking for a RAM extension. I would be interested in buying one board if possible.

Thanks a lot to everybody who could help me.

best
