CrazyDots

Postby damanloox » Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:01 am

Does anybody have any idea what CrazyDots card is worth...?
And how to check if it's version I or II?

I have a version 2 card and it can do 24-bit right out of the box. Version 1 needs a small add-on daughter board to manage modes beyond 256 colors.

OK thanks but... Can somebody post a picture of either v1 or v2 (assuming there's a physical difference between them)?

Here's a picture of a Crazy Dots and the add-on lp mentioned:

As for differences between Crazy Dots and Crazy Dots II, visually none really. Lonny can correct me if I'm wrong. Difference is in RAMDACs. Crazy Dots has BT471 & BT478, that can show max 256 colors. Crazy Dots II has BT481AKP that allows 15bit,16bit, and 24bit modes.

The add-on for the original only does 15bit color I think.

Really don't want to yank my board to snap photos or verify chip numbers. Call me paranoid.

Found this image a while ago that I saved. I suspect the chip with the sticker over it is the RAMDAC?

Yes, the RAMDAC is under the sticker.

Here's a CD II:

Note that the RAMDAC is BT481. Also used in some Mach32 cards.

Ha, always wanted a CrazyDots card, ended up getting a Spektrum card and am in the process of getting it working, but to be fair I do have a Mega STe and TT, so could use another.

Definitely more useful in the TT with all the extra RAM and speed!
Atari 8Bits: 800xl, 600xl, XEGS, 800, 130xe, 130xe (VBXE, U1MB, Stereo POKEY)
Atari STs: 1040STf (broken shifter), 1040STe, Mega STe, TT030, Falcon (CT60e, SuperVidel)

Figures. ;)

Here's a CD II:

Since your photo reveals the chip number, anyone with a different number can probably safely assume they have a CD I card.

I do recall mine not having the sticker and that chip had been clearly hand soldered like someone had replaced it. I bought the card 2nd hand many years ago, however it's always worked quite well.

Here's a list of RAMDACs that might appear on Crazy Dots. Anything that's 15/16/24bit is CD II

Bt471 6bit DAC.
Bt476 6bit DAC.
Bt477 6/8bit DAC
Bt478 6/8bit DAC.
Bt481 15/16/24bit
Bt482 15/16/24bit
Bt484 15/16/24bit 6/8bit DAC. Has hardware cursor.
Bt485 15/16/24bit 6/8bit DAC. Has hardware cursor.

Edit: Corrected Bt481 and Bt482 to be 24bit as well. Thanks Frank. I copy pasted list and didn't pay attention.

Where can I get the Spektrum I HR version - it can go up to 1600x1280 @ 16 - 130Mhz - would be killer for CuBase if it works ? :)

Ask Leech, he has a Spectrum TC in his TT now, and think he said it is working 1024*760 8-bit.

AIRC, there is an auto prog that Cubase needs to run 8bit color on Falcon.
There may be caviets for Cubase to function in the TT in more than 8bit mode.

From the Spectrum manual, I gather the main differences in those cards is memory. Some it can be added, some not.

Shouldn't Cubase in 16 color be enough? :)
