new TT owner ;)

Postby damanloox » Thu Apr 26, 2018 8:12 am

So... I finally got the TT (after 25 years of waiting ;))
Could anybody please tell me what patches are really "essential" for TOS 3.06 (I have UK version, I have eprom programmer and rom chips so I'd love to apply patches and burn patched tos)..

Gratz. Nothing essential, really. Unless you only plan to run on TOS and not MiNT or MagiC it's not worth patching the TOS.

A patch worth doing though is what the boys behind Thunder and Storm have done. They've adapted TOS 2.06 IDE boot ability to their TOS 3.06 version that ships with Thunder and Storm. TOS 2.06 is newer than 3.06 which is why it's more "advanced".

That question of the patches necessary or not necessary for TOS 3.06 also I posted it some time ago in another place, but nobody answered. I have been an ST user since I appeared, but I have also achieved the TT a few years ago and I have little experience with it.
The response of Atarian-Computing seems to be very coherent but not yet complete, for example on the page
http://avtandil.narod.ru/tose.html indicate that the TOS 3.05 needs several patches but the TOS 3.06 does not indicate anything; Do we understand that he does NOT need a patch or that nobody knows what he needs? Was everything from version 3.05 corrected when moving to 3.06?
I use TOS with NVDI, so I am very interested in knowing the needs of this operating system. At the moment I do not apply any patch and everything works correctly, I am filling the CF card and there is still no error in the number of folders or directories (in Mega STe I did need CACHExxx and FOLDRxxx).
We will wait for more opinions, experiences or related documentation, because it seems that there is a certain information gap regarding the TOS 3.06 patches.

TOS 3.05 patches were added to TOS 3.06. I'm pretty sure there are no official patches to 3.06. There are PAK patches though. Also, read this for more patches: https://forum.atari-home.de/index.php?topic=13347.0

That is a more conclusive answer.
Thank you very much, mate.

P.S. Your comment should be added on all the pages that have a TOS and patches list, to avoid doubts and confusion. For example, TOS 4.xx also has some patches and they do not appear on some pages either, that can lead to erroneous reflections that they do not need a patch.

Thanks but... where do you download these patches (eg. ramsize, winx, newlogo)?

You'd have to ask Gaga for that :)

Most of them and many more are included in TOSPatch 3.06. Imho, TOSPatch is the most comprehensive collection of patches for different TOS versions:

WinX is a excellent patch for almost all TOS versions, not only for Tos 3.06.
I also use it on my falcon/ct63. You can get it here.

I also find that colour TT is an excellent addition for the desktop, if you have a graphic card.

I have the Thunder/Storm set and the TOS chips that are attached, so: do I have all the recent patches?
I try to understand German, but it is difficult even with the translator.
Thank you.

yes - I am selling one! I purchased two TTs actually ;) but need funds for.. another project ;)
The other TT is "untouched" (ie. exactly as I purchased it) - 4mb ST RAM, 16 MB TT RAM (both original atari cards), original hard drive etc...
_My_ TT has a lot more (crazy dots, Lightning VME, Storm, scsi2sd and... brand new UK keyboard)... Now that I think about all the money I spent on it... I really love Atari apparently ;))

Just because I want to nitpick - 2.06 and 3.06 are actually compiled from the same sources and are identical apart from hardware support.

If that isn't documented on the Thunder&Storm wiki pages, you'll have to ask this question to the makers. I'm sorry; I don't know which patches (apart from support for booting from IDE) were included in the TOS chips shipped with the Thunder.
