Most highly recommended desktop programs / Mint

Postby mzry » Wed Jan 11, 2017 12:17 pm

Hey all,

I have been wondering what everyones most recommended desktop programs are.

I personally use (on my stock Falcon with Vanilla mint 1.18):

Highwire for internet
Atari IRC for - IRC...
Troll mail
QED for config file editing
Litchi FTP for transfering between my windows pc and falcon
Papyrus for word processing
Module players for different file formats / output formats: Mega player, Gemplay and Falcamp which does mp3 too.
Aniplay for videos.

Anything else anyone recommends?

Texel for spreadsheet
Kandinsky and Artworx for vector graphics
Papillon, pixart, Photoline for picture editing and drawings
Phoenix for database
Calamus for publishing
Cubase for audio and music
ZeroX for sound editing ...

In fact the list can be very long depending on your interests.

Did you try aMail for mail and aFTP for FTP access?
I would also recomend Troll for mail but if you dont need all the options Troll offers maybe you would like aMail more.
aFTP is just so simple FTP client I really love it. On the FireBee aFTP is really slow so I use Litchi, but on the Falcon and MIlan it worked much faster.

I used also Notes for the desktop notes. Photoline was great. Zview for pictures, pdf viewing.

I don't know how these programs will run on a stock Falcon but I would add to the list:
Luna for text editing
MarathonMail for email
ResourceMaster for resource file editing
Vision for image processing
AtarICQ for... ICQ
AHCC for C development
GBE for GFA development
Some of Probe House's (wongck over here) programs might be useful to you according to your needs

And the list goes on...

for Falcon there program that is not GEM but it is clean - it will switch to truecolor mode and use DSP for decompresing JPG.
I have three version, not sure which one I use...:
http://milan.kovac.cc/atari/software/in ... EGV222.FTP
http://milan.kovac.cc/atari/software/in ... EG_DSP.FTP
http://milan.kovac.cc/atari/software/in ... SHOWER.FTP

Here you can see it in action: https://youtu.be/ycHGQQYoWZQ?t=6m10s

otherwise, Imagecopy and Gemview are good GEM viewers. There is mGIF but I dislike somethinkg about it... There is also Look'n'see multi functional file viewer!
I think that there is some ACC GEM program that will use DSP for JPGS but I can not remember exactly name...

On my 4MB STfm running MiNT with monochrome monitor, I used ImageCopy and mGIF. Last one was great for viewing pictures I'd rendered with Pov-Ray (overnight), as it had this mode "flicker" mode which showed color images as grayscale on the Atari monochrome monitor.

MGIF convolution matrices were also nice if one wanted to do some image manipulation tricks similar to Linux Gimp's image filters.

For BBS mails I used Kivi QWK reader, but that's not very relevant anymore. :-) For text editing, Everest...
