My towered box already has a socket installed, I can help out, Chris. I still need some TOS ROM's anyway. :D

I got the battery connectors a while ago, but the ones on the SMT version are smaller, seems I forgot to order one to check  I think the battery is physically smaller on the SMT one as the 2032 is to wide..

I got these ones, they look solid built, but if someone has some time to look though farnell for a quality (and smaller) battery socket then it would save me a some time.

Finally got a few mins to create the cell socket pads. This should be complete (copper fill is turned off in the image). Will hopefully be able to send off for 3 prototypes this week.

I'll send you a PCB to fiddle with when they come. Wish I had put a socket in my falcon now

Are there any low-profile sockets which enable fitting the Dallas (or equivalents) and still fitting the RF shielding?

You can get low profile sockets. The board is as small as possible, I don't know if it will fit under the shielding as I lost mine somewhere around 20 years ago :)

Sweet! I did socket mine, the DS12885 doesn't seem to be working quite right, so am looking forward to one of these lower profile ones. Will be willing to verify it'll fit.

Edit: because Engrish is hard.

catmando has the first design. I'm just waiting for him to beta test it. I can't see anything being wrong but rather it be tested properly before others start fitting it.

Someone else is testing out a ST RTC board aswell currently. I've not much time to test out a lot of these things, so test boards are generally being shipped to people who are willing to build them up and test them. I only get 3 boards made, so I keep one and send 2 off to willing people.. if I can find what pile of junk those RTC PCBs in, if you can solder SMT stuff then Id be willing to post you a PCB to try. You will have to source the parts yourself though as I dont have stock of anything yet.

Sweet, I haven't been brave enough to solder any SMT, though I have a hard drive controller board I have been meaning to swap the BIOS on to try to resurrect the drive. Maybe I will wait for the testing, then buy. I have more money than time at the moment.

I'm actually the designer of that SMT version. I hadn't realized it had made the rounds so much! I made a number of them before realizing that local mail providers make it unreasonably expensive to ship (I won't make people pay ~$20 shipping for a $20 item)

I took the original down a while ago and made two updated versions. The first uses much larger holes and castellations to sit around the 'steps' in the two-way socket used, making it ~2mm lower and slightly narrower than the original. Unfortunately said castellations are somewhat of a ghetto version due to the limitations of the PCB fab house (they're really just through-hole pads cut in half, instead of proper castellated plating, so they usually need some manual cleanup). The 2nd updated version doesn't need a fancy socket and can be used with plain regular 'breakway' pinstrips.

They've also been slightly improved in that it is no longer necessary to remove pins. Even 'no connect' positions have holes, there's just no need to solder them.
