Compact-Flash to SD-Card Adapter in Falcon

Postby 1st1 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 9:47 pm

Hello, I just rebuild my Falcon. I have removed the 20 GB IDE HDD and replaced it by an IDE to dual compact flash adapter and a 32 GB Compact flash card. This works fine, I have copyied many many things onto it already.

A 2nd compact flash in the 2nd CF slot also works fine, but I hoped that I also can use a Compact-Flash to SD-Card adapter in the 2nd slot of the IDE-2-CF adapter, and then some SD cards. The advantage would be that in my notebook and a few other computers I have also SD slot. This would make data transfer from modern computer/imternet to the Falcon very easy.

But, if I plug the CF-2-SD-adapter in the CF2IDE adapter attached to Falcon's internal IDE interface, it does not care if a SD-card is inside or not, the Falcon does not start when I switch it on. Instead the monitor stays black or green and nothing happens.

Does anybody here has experience with this? Is there any chance to get this working?

(Behind using the SDcard adapter there is another idea as well: There are SD-memory cards which include Wifi connection....)

There was a similar thread a couple weeks ago somewhere about this. In my falcon CF cards do not work reliable. I use a IDE-SD adapter and it works great. Possible faulty adapter you have ? or inserted it wrong ?

As the CF2SD adapter is a thick type II adapter, I can't insert it upside down.

By the way, my CF card is a SanDisk 32GB 50x speed type (quite big, but not fastest model, still much faster than the Falcon can handle)

THanks for this link, I have checked, this adapter is still available and cheap. But the disadvantage of it is that you can't install it in the falcon in a way that the SD card stays removalble without opening the case.

My idea is to install a notebook slim floppy and to use the gap between the floppy and the case for the card reader that it is reachable from external.

Just for your reference, that is what I have done this evening. The position of the floppy drive and the CF adapter is still not optimal, it must be movend again some milimeters to the right and I need to fill the gaps left and right of the card reader, but that correction not today...

Wow, impressive work ! Nicely done.
How do you connect a laptop drive to the falcon?
Do you need an adapter?

Definitely you should be awarded a geek point for that!

Agreed. Lovely work. We happen to have a few of those shugart adapters and slim floppies at work too.

Talking about SD card adapters: anyone seen combined IDE to CF and SD card adapter in offer ? So a passive CF adapter + active (with some chip) SD card adapter on same board. It could be with 40 pin IDE or 44 pin 2.5 inch IDE connector.
I ordered 2 such adapters from Hungarian seller about month ago, but so far only received message that they have no it at moment, will inform me when arrives - really unprofessional.
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

The slim floppy adapter is one of these like they are used in some slim PC or rackservers. I got mine through ebay. There I also found a longer flat cable for the adapter to drive connection. When you want to use the adapter with the Falcon, you have to short DS0 and DS1 on the adapter, as the Falcon accesses the drive with DS0 and the drive expects DS1 (no jumper there). As in Falcon DS1 is not used, this is easy to do. In a 1040 you would need to do it slightly different.

You use something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SD-SDHC-SDXC-Card-Extender-Extension-Cable-Connection-Extender-Linker-TV-GPS-TT-/261975315655?hash=item3cfef214c7:g:06IAAOSwfcVUH76c

I prefer SD-cards myself. CF-cards works - but not all of them. Some works well, some doesn't work at all and then you have the really nasty ones, the ones that appears to work but really doesn't.

Until now all tested CF cards work in my falcon. I tested several from 64 MB up to 32 GB- Some were known brands like Sandisk, Transcend, but also noname things like Medion or DUAL. I even tested some which I grabbed out from network appliances/switches/routers like Cisco. It might depend also on the used IDE2CF adapter.
