Cecile and other HD drivers

Postby Cobe » Sun Mar 13, 2016 8:54 pm

As I'm new to the Atari I was totally unaware of such things as HD driver and still I think I didn't get it fully.
First before registering and posting here I wanted to try and do on my own what I can. And managed to put CF in my Falcon and make partition.
I tried a few drivers and the first that did a job for me don't ask why was Cecile and even the version was in french and although I was "learning" french long ago in school I never went much further than "monte sur en elephant" :) So I'm wondering:

Is HDDriver the only one that can make DOS partitions so I could see them on PC/Mac or I can do that with Cecile or some other free driver?
Can I switch now to other HD driver but retain partition I made and software I transferred to it?

Your options are HD9 http://hddriver.seimet.de/ or http://www.8bitchip.info/atari/pphdr.php Which is also good, I have used both.

I don't know how other drivers work, someone her no doubt does. Though if your partition is a normal DOS type, then really , you should be able just to install a new driver without to much trouble.

Just try booting the demo of HD9 from a floppy, and bypass your old driver software and see if you can get HD9 to see your drive, then you can give it a try out.

PP's driver is also very good, he is on here a lot so you can get good help, and I think his software is a lower cost than HD9.

I wouldn't use anything else these days, older software driver are likely very old and buggy and if something goes wrong, your in trouble.

Ok. Thanks, I am aware of those drivers but I was thinking if there is some free solution.

I google translated Cecile doc and as I understand it should be able to read small 32MB dos partitions and maybe somehow even the big ones but as I see it can't create neither of them.

So anyone knows if there is some PC utility that I could use now to create small dos partition without destroying the partition I already have?

CBHD is very good and free. The Atari original software is AHDI, also free. You can then use a PC to create a DOS partition and use BigDOS to read them.

AHDI was the first that I tried and it froze during partitioning. I'll check CBHD. And do you know what tool should I use on PC cause when I insert card windows wants to format it completely?

With PC you can create only DOS type partitions - AHDI will not work with them. And I doubt that Cecile too.
Here you can DL free versions of my drivers, and there is link to partitioning SW on PC.

I tried to follow instructions from your site but got stuck in regedit.
There's no Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_CF_Reader&Rev_1.01
See picture.
Maybe because it's MSI Wind Laptop with built-in card reader that doesn't have CF. I have usb card reader with CF socket.

That should go in new thread. Text on my site says "like" - so you need to see something similar. And is for XP. In later Win. versions it may be pretty much different.
We need some new guides, experiences about all this multiple partitions on removables access in Windowses. I have very bad experiences with Windows 7 in it. Best would be to open new section in forum with this issue, what affects certainly many people. But I doubt that my suggestion will be accepted by forum leaders - just because I suggested it 8O

Hey guys thanks a lot. My multicard reader was faulty so I got new one. I managed to make partitions under XP and install Putnik's driver on atari side. I tested it briefly and everything seems to work fine.

I'd have one question.

Does BigDOS-F.prg stop loading of other things that I put in AUTO folder?

Why do you use BigDOS?

Well as I understood Pera's drivers are supposed to be used with BigDOS so the partitions could be bigger, created and accessable from PC.
