I just tried phgmap v2.4 and dropped and photo taken with my iPod here at home. When I drop the photo it places it correctly at my house. Cool. However, if I click the thumb, nothing happens. No error message, as if totally ignored. If double click jpg in Thing Desktop v1.27b directory window it opens as expected. No spaces in the path to viewer, nor the jpg file name.

Frankly, I am at a lost with Thing!.
If you can get it to do AV-protocol, let me know the proper code for it.

Does your application register with the AV server by sending the AV_PROTOKOLL message? If not, that is probably where the problem is. You need to let the AV server know that you support and/or use quoted filenames.

it won't work. You have to change the name of the zTask folder so that the name doesn't contain any spaces. This path will work:

Oh... it will work, you just use quotes. :D

Code: Select all

run "c:\desktops\ztask 1.0\ztask.app"

Thanks for your tip. I didn't know that. There is still much to learn for me. That's one cause why I'm here. :)

Yes, it does.

And I assume you've read section 15.1.1 "AV protocol, Quoting in" of TOS.HYP?

I tried some tests with my GFA editor since it uses the AV-Protocol. I can't get AV_VIEW to work at all and I get the same result as with phgmap. Thing doesn't throw an alert, however it does send back the VA_VIEWED message with failure error code. So it seems you are not going insane. ;)

My editor has options to view text (*.txt) and assembler source (*.s) files and it works using the AV-Protocol. Maybe years ago I had the same problem with AV_VIEW, but if I did I failed to write comments in my source code. I sort of suck at that at times. Anyway, if you want a work around for Thing Desktop use VA_START (0x4711) message instead. I also suggest Thing HYP, it has its own section on the AV-Protocol if you need a second opinion.

Thanks LP. :D
Some hair left on my head

Will try that VA_Start option.

Edit:
 That needs the viewer pathname, which means I have to ask the user which program he wants to use as viewer.

No, just pass the path+name to the file to display, and a NULL as argument.

So thanks to lonny's hint, looks there is a fix for Thing! and that's not using VA_VIEW.
Will do some more testing.

PH GMAP v2.41
Implements a different call for Thing! to display JPG files.
So now Thing! users can also click on a thumbnail on the map and get it to display the photo.

Get it from the usual download place.

From your description, you must be using Thing! v1.50.
v1.50 will just run zView on first click of the thumbnails.
Subsequent clicks on thumbnail, will display the photo.
( make sure the MAP window is topped when you click on it, otherwise it just top the map window).

For older version v1.27, v1.29 it will run zView and load the photo on 1st click of thumbnail.

IDK... same program, just that newer version behaves differently.

I use Thing v1.29 but it bahaves as you described for the Thing v1.50.
I use only FireBee and as I know there is no v1.50 for the FireBee.

zView do not have much settings, so my guess is it may be the Set Application settings, but I do not see any where that's not default.
In any case my current setting for zView is
Start directory: Application
Is used to open; *.jpg, *.gif, *.pdf
is used to show: *.jpg
Option compare full path: ticked
Understand VA_Start: ticked
Run in console: ticked

The rest are un-configured or left blank. I think the options settings are just defaults.
