rsync in SpareMINT

Postby Dal » Sat Aug 27, 2011 10:42 am

I've started looking at backup routines for my falcons. I already use rsync for other backups on my network and to external storage silos so this seemed the best option - especially with it's partial file update algos etc.

I installed the rsync and ssh rpms from the sparemint archive and tested it to my NAS with limited success.

The command all works, I can sync an entire partition however, the rsync command never actually exits, it just hangs until I CTRL-C. So scripting this will not work as I would like to call multiple rsync commands for each partition to separate directories on my NAS.

The NAS is a Buffalo Linkstation running rsync 3.0.3 and the Falcon is running rsync 2.5.4. A quick 'Google' popped up this post which 'helpfully' suggests upgrading to the latest version. It looks as though there is no stable version above 2.5.4 for m68k-mint but the gentoo archive does have 3.0.8 for m68k (not mint) - can I use this?

Hi,
it is old topic but I am trying to do something similar: I would like to RSYNC files between Falcon na my Mac.

There is few possibility:

1) connect from Falcon with FTP to my Mac and ran Rsync on Falcon

2) better solution, run FTP or NFS server on Falcon and connect Mac to Falcon and run Rsync on Mac.
but is there a FTP server for Falcon, or maybe SMB (samba) server for Falcon (when I say "Falcon", I am thinking on MiNT ;) )

---
btw Dal, how did you solve your problem with Rsync?

This is a known issue with rsync on mint. I get the feeling it has completed the job, it just never exits.

It also has another issue with timestamps and summertime. I am hoping some fixes in the mint developers pipeline will help.

Yes, you have several options :
ftp server from SpareMint : https://github.com/freemint/sparemint/b ... 8kmint.rpm
SMB server from SpareMint : https://github.com/freemint/sparemint/b ... 8kmint.rpm
NFS client or the NFS server from Vincent Riviere site : http://vincent.riviere.free.fr/soft/m68 ... ives/mint/
You'll find also sharity Light (Samba client) on the same page.
But in general samba ports for Atari are old versions and don't deal very well with new security protocoles.
Finally there is a standalone ftp server : http://users.otenet.gr/~papval/magicnet.htm

My preference is the NFS client which is the fastest and works well with NAS, and doesn't need a lot of ressources.

That's correct. Alan Hourihane sent me a fixed binary years ago where this problem was solved, but it doesn't look like the patch has been distributed. The SpareMiNT rsync is still non-functional. That's a pity, because rsync is a really useful tool. I used it for years as a Timemachine-like backup-tool on my Milan and Firebee.

True, see also here: https://mikro.naprvyraz.sk/mint/201401/msg00018.html and your original post here: https://mikro.naprvyraz.sk/mint/201202/msg00232.html

Maybe you could post the binary here, if you still have it?

EDIT: Actually, maybe the two posts talk about different issues. One of them is supposed to be fixed in the Gentoo archive, so you may give it a try, too: https://mikro.naprvyraz.sk/gentoo.atari ... /net-misc/

I think I may have the same fixed version but IIRC it still hangs at the end.

I stopped using it for this reason so I haven't tried it in a few years.

Here it is. I have not used it for a while (I'm using PARCP-USB for backups now) but I just tested it by copying some files locally and it appears to be working correctly.

Thanx. Will check it later; for now I put it on site: http://milan.kovac.cc/atari/software/?folder=/OS/MINT
