GrafX2 2.2 atari port [beta]

Postby saulot » Sun Jan 30, 2011 6:24 pm

Hi, I've managed to port pixel painter GrafX 2.2 to Atari Falcon, but it should work on Atari TT too. As it is SDL stuff it can be little slow on standard machines:
http://nokturnal.pl/2011/01/grafx_atari ... ch_lang/en

It has few bugs though, so it's beta for now until everything will be resolved.

Cheers,
Saulot

I'm happy to test on the TT (Once I get home) if that's any help

Yes sure. If you could send some screenshots and tell how it performs it would be nice. I'm really curious how it will be working and how usable it will be. Do you have TT-RAM?

No TT RAM sadly, though it does have a Matrix card installed which is currently set to run at TT High Resolution, though I can drop it down onto the normal TT desktop and test there as well

hm, I really doubt that it will be work with graphics card. Maybe in gem window. But don't know if mouse will be handled properly. It doesn't work under aranym (because of mouse). It seems to be sdl problem..

I can just disable the redirection to the graphics card by renaming a file in the auto folder, so no real issue there. Can have both quickly tested tonight and do something more thorough with pictures tomorrow evening (Been spending a lot of time with the Atari kit in the last few days)

Well that went well, me TT did not like it at all, 2 bombs on screen then back to the desktop bit no mouse movement!

Still, nothing ventured nothing gained.

My machine has TOS 3.06 and 4MB of ST ram and I tried it in TT low and medium resolutions

Thats bad. It's maybe memory problem (you have written that you have 4mb ram). Have you tried to launch it with control during boot? Starting resolution is irrelevant.
It bombs right away or it is loading for some time and throws some output to the screen? Do you have FPU(I don't remember if TT had it)?
Second thing is that initial resolution, you could try to edit configuration file(somewhere is defined 320x240 mode) and change it to let's say 640x480?
Maybe its time to dig my TT from the basement for tests.

This may help for standard falcons/lower spec machines:
I've done some further tests with RGB and 4mb machine. And everything works, although there's not much ram left. To run it in RGB some settings in GFX2.INI you have to change: default video to 320,200, and screen mode to fullscreen.

Second thing that could help(in general) is to reduce number of UNDO pages to 1 and turning off backups (it seems that this is broken now, I couldn't turn it off). Also setting Merge_movement can change alot (it's frequency of mouse movement reporting). Increasing it we are losing precision though. Everyone with standard falcons could try for example 20 value.

I think that some things will look better soon, because it turned out that the linux/bsd source pack on which I've worked is 10 months old and since that there was alot of bugfixes on svn, so I think that the next build will be better (I've got new version of gcc tools too).

Could be worse :)

I did disable the graphics card and also disabled NVDI after the initial crash just in case, so as far as the TT went it was as close to factory settings as possible. The TT had an FPU as standard and at some point I'd love to add some TT ram, especially as I'm planning to use this machine for running Logic and doing writing.

I'll have a look at the settings file later tonight and have another play, I left everything sitting in my development partition on the hard drive as is and backed it up just in case I needed to do any tweaking later on.

This is great news, I use it a lot on my pc. Mainly to convert pic's and because it can handle
older Atari format. So I'm very pleased with htis and will surly test it on my Falcon030 !!!

Well I got it working on my TT in ST Low resolution, however as you move the mouse the control panel breaks and starts to move up the screen. I took a video on my iPhone which I will try to upload later.

EDIT:- The movie is at http://malcolmramage.com/IMG_1114.MOV

I've put the new binaries http://nokturnal.pl/downloads/nokturnal ... _03_02.ZIP. It contains all the fixes to GRAFX 2.2 from SVN. The former version was from march 2010. I've also disabled autobackup, but probably I will reenable it only under MiNT in the future. Deleting CFG from older version is recommended.

Hello,

I recompiled the app for Coldfire (m68k and m5475 works for firebee - the official 020-60 build does not). It works quite well from the speed point of view....

However - there is an problem regarding the cursor redraw ( or maybe event reporting ). THe position is only updated when you click the mouse buttons. Can somebody confirm this bug for the latest m68020-60 build? Or is it coldfire specific?

Greets,
m

so why don't you upload it to official project page? It's with latest SDL sources (with GEM fixes)?

Hi saulot,

Thank you so much for the latest Atari release. Great stuff. You rule!

Since it´s only Atari-related, I want to mention two bugs here:
- Frame of the magnifier leaves pixels while moving it.
- GrafX2 crashes calling it with help command.

Best regards,
AtFaCT

yeah, there's some problems with redraw, it isn't only magnifier issue only. I will check out the crash too.

What config are you using? With videl, gfx card? Unfortunately no layers version was dropped in latest official release.

I´m using a Falcon with CT60 under MagiC and without a graphics card (at the moment).

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know, the grafx version on coldfire doesn't crash when pressing the help button.
Maybe it helps when searching the bug.

Thank you, but I didn´t mean to press help button within GrafX. If I start GrafX2 with the command "-help", my system will be frozen after displaying the info and exiting the program. Other commands work.
