Programmed Tos roms avalible for falcon 030 TT etc

Postby simbo » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:23 pm

the first batch of 8 X tos 4.04 ic's on rom chips 27C4002-12 is ready & tested
i can do 4.92 but im not sure its usefull you need to read about it and decide
i hear that if you download the missing library's and includes from 2.06 and other sources online
and add them as needed to dirs...
magicaly tos4.04 released source compiles
maybe its just my ways...
or maybe im in the dark.. :lol:

most people recomend 4.04 as 4.92 was a development version im sure ??

the cost is £6 + postage {usualy about £1.50 or so~}
if you would like a plcc ic extraction tool just add £1.40
so would be £7.40+postage
with tos 4.04 most will know that you just use the nvram reset tool to update and change as needed
there are a few around one even on uwe hddriver site just place a copy on disk
and reset the nvram after fitting
its a 5 minute job to change
with the right tool!!! its easy :)
as for the TT and others they use localised language sets and the roms are as always avalible at the usual cost
of £2 per ic and £2.50 to cover costs + postage you just move two jumpers and plug them in
i do have a couple of sets of german tos3.06 premade
and i think ive so far found seven languages of tos3.06

i also have some {10} 90ns eproms 27C010 used in hades etc machines these machine must use 90ns or better eproms

:contract: i must stress that this is a 'not for profit' service to users of atari retros and others
who would like eproms flashed up and i just buy more chips and needed tools
invest now then we all have a source of roms etc... i have every type from 16k to 4Mb

if you would like a set send me a PM using the boards personal mail
or make a post below and ill get back too you :cheers:

falcon fit instructions

remove all cables
place a towel to be under the atari or unit to avoid scratches
turn the unit over
remove all casing screws {not the floppy unit three screws }
and save these screws in two groups front and back {small front large back 5 and 3}
they are distinct and a different head
then turn back over

now carefully shuggle the top loose keeping the key board towards you
and take the top metal case units 7 screws out
and remove it

under the right just under the keyboard which you can easily lift off
is a ram unit

carefully lift off the ram unit from its pins socket

and under is the target rom to replace

now using a plcc extraction tool only !!! supplies if needed {if you dont have one you need it!!}
youll see two slots for it too fit
place it in and squeeze to maintain a side to side preasure youll know the drill
im sure
then lift the chip out with one squeeze
take the older one aside

youll note the writing is on the same plane

in is vertical to you and legable from the left of the machine
it allignes only one way with its cut corner {see the photo's}
and press the new one home
and replace the rom make sure of correct pin allignment
here is two pics show the orientation of the rom replacement and original

see the pic's its a no brainer really :mrgreen: :|
im sure popsel and ppera can come up with a 4Mb flash part addin??? ...
but it would need some solders for sure
takes me 15 mins to remove a cracked socket
even with smd hot air pump at 400 degrees and a melted spent socket
so dont try to lift it out without the right tool!!! for a good reason

i think youll find tos 4.04 is far more stable and needed

Hi Simbo

I've had various ST's and Ste's but now hoping to buy a TT or falcon. I've seen a german falcon available. Question is, is this Tos swap a way to change os and keymaps etc to convert a german TT or Falcon to be a UK machine? Also hoping to just then pop off and swap keycaps :)

do you think thats a solution?

you never know your luck :)

Thanks in advance!

I thought TOS 4.04 was multi language on the one chip? I have a German Falcon 030 and all I had to do was replace the key caps with English QWERTY ones. Perhaps if you still want to remove the TOS chip, maybe ask Simbo to do a dual TOS arrangement to have 4.04 and maybe 4.92?

just find out if it has older than tos4.04 installed
you can use sysinfo.prg to see this info

i wont make roms for 4.92 etc
they are too buggy and i dont like the boot block
and i dont think there is any advantages apart from a bad headache to using it

You can change both the OS language & keyboard mappings via the NVRAM setup in Falcon, no need to change rom.
However, this is not so for TT. You will need to change the German rom to UK rom for a UK system.
Of course key caps needs to be changed.

I used to soft load tos 4.92 to "play" around with before XaAes was stable.
It' s buggy but at least it's multitasking aware.
Anyway, best to just soft load it rather than putting in ROM.

ive programmed and tested another 4 ic's

so they are ready

i have a few spare for any custom image anyone needs

on 120ns type

i can get some 100ns types for faster systems

not sure its needed but i found 5 so ill make them up for experiments

usual cost is cheep unlike some ebay sellers offering easy chips with a daft label for 50 euros + post eeek...

reflections are this

standard atari falcon uses 120ns rom
a falcon with atari 16mb ram {80ns} uses 120ns rom
stock machines

machine with 60ns ram and 100ns rom loads faster so boots quicker

i think a trim is to use 100ns plcc {vrare} to get a faster boot
usefull for ct owners i am sure

as the videl supports it

i will add one to my nemesis as i know it needs it
i use 60ns fp 16MB ibm memory,,,
and ill add the 100ns rom for sure

i managed to retain the last 5 the guy had

so i have 3 programmed ic with tos 4.04 and 5 spare

if you need 4.04 plcc please email post or , pm me
if you have a custom tos 4X type image for the falcon also pm
ill flash and send the chip if needed a plcc tool {2 left on last batch}
see above for the cost {cheep}

notes:

with wait state there is a link to make

especialy if you use a different speed of chip

simply look on the left hand side of the machine

these chips i have are 120ns -12 or 12fn
most of the atari tos 4.02/3/4 upgrade ic are -15 or 15fn and need the 'wait state' changed
to get a faster response

here is what the ct60 pages say

it applies to all machines when changing tos chips to be sure of best boot and ins fetch performace
forinstance if your machine used a 150ns then changed to a new 120
your boot is slowish this is why

ct60/63 site quote

TOS Chip 'change out also my ones are 120ns so need on off off on setting '

Verify the access time of your TOS chip (below the ST-RAM card). Remove the right border of the sticker. You should read a -10 or -12 or -15 corresponding to 100, 120 or 150 ns.

If you have a 150ns chip, you have to modify the solder jumpers of the U46 place. U46 is at the left border of the mb between the cartridge and joystick ports. The (default) setting you should see is, reading from left : ON OFF OFF ON... with ON that is a solder jumper. Modify the 3rd and 4th points to set ON OFF ON OFF. Do nothing if you have a -10 or -12 chip.

therefore only modify
if you had on off on off
and set it to on off off on

i hope this makes sence

and if you had a 150ns rom say tos 4.03 etc
will make the machine boot faster and load ins from rom to ram faster

---- so to the loud pics pics are best for sure----

this picture is an unmodified 100ns tos 4.04 chip machine.has 16mb atari ram card so

on off off off must be the first 4 for 100ns -10 or -10fn type proms ?or 200 i dont think so... must be -10 types this code
@16mb using 80ns dram ..
but when things speed up with added bus 60ns ram is needed for sure!!!!

on off off off for -10 or -10fn

1000 = 100ns -10 or -10fn or -100
1001 = 120ns -12 or -12fn or -120
1010 = 150ns -15 or -15fn or -150
1011 = 200ns -20 or -20fn or -200

so if you have a ct63 and a good new 120ns or 100ns is far better for ct63
i dont have them but can get some {pm me}
you need to set like this pic

with the nemesis using 55mhz clock i had to set the tos 4.04 i made on 120ns
to on off off off
1000 or the 100ns state... for best boot speed... without not boot

so

using 100ns eprom with 60ns falcon ram and ct 60/63 using on off off off is the best

using 120 on off off off is worse!!!!!! but works!!! and is right if it works

depends on the eprom and chipset latnecy with repect to the ct unit
and also its firmware and the psu used and etc etc etc

so use the right setting of on off off off as the bus is faster its needs the better speed
and use a -10 tos chip ...for ct units

should be

on off off on with -12 or 120 ns types

BUT using 120ns and ct units makes the bus faster

so either try it at on off off off and it works
or ask look for 100ns types for max performances with this unit

for prefetch in tos and or rom load...

looking over some pdf i see that the mil spec devices 4002 and 240 are below 100ns @ 90ns 80 and 70 {very special 50ns}
programming these plcc types would be the BEST for ct addins

setting to on off off off for U46 pads is best... and final....

i will try to find some -90 or -9 or -90fn types

but i wish myself good luck and you too

Dear Simbo,

I know that you are always hunting good deals or rare hardware. I found two sources for 4MBit EPROMS w. speeds <= 100ns and I am wondering if I should simply order a handful or so. Can you tell me if they are any good for a Falcon TOS?

- AT27C4096-90JU (Atmel, 4MBit, 512K*16, 90ns, 44pin PLCC): US$8.74
- M27C4002 Series 4 Mbit (256 K x 16) OTP EPROM 100 ns 5 V - PLCC-44: US$3.94

Thanks & have a good one!
Thomas

yes either is ok
i use the 27C4002-12 {120ns}

100ns is the fastest you need even if you use a ct63 120ns is fine even here
with added ct63 you just need faster than 150ns to be sure of a boot up and no glitch
nice find though and a decent price for later of the two

remember with the images around you must 'byte swap' them before you flash
or the machine wont boot

the byte swaped images is in this topic list somewhere
but here it is attached

Hi,

Just (re)acquired a Falcon030 with TOS 4.01, and I'd like to replace it with 4.04. Are any of these still available, and if so, do you ship to the USA?

Thanks
