What does this metal under FDD do?

Postby wongck » Mon Mar 22, 2010 12:02 pm

On my falcon, my floppy drive spins and make some scratching sound because of the metal under it.
What does this do?
Can I remove it?

<rant>
Its part of the Falcon so don't mangle it! I've never seen a Falcon,
but the metal may provide structural support as well as electrical
conductivity to reduce noise. If it is a problem, maybe it can be
bent slightly (remove it first) OR get a Falcon approved floppy
drive OR bend the floppy drive.

THE FLOPPY DRIVE MUST STAY

I still use my first PC's 1.44Mb floppy drive from 1992 on my new
computer because it is the best one I've got (trusty old friend).

I bought a new one once (on the shelf now). Well... It can't do
the old floppy media very well, and it has an exposed 'spinner'
on the bottom. Junk! (it will work if I pamper it though).

Neither of my two Falcon 030 computers came with this metal bracket. Was this something that came as standard from Atari themselves?

well i need to bend it quite a lot so that it does not touch the spinning part.
If it bend so much, it does not touch the bottom of the drive any more, so the noise is gone
but then it does not provide any structural support not electrical conductivity etc.
So it defeats the purpose.

my original falc ffd died couple of months back and I was using this new one.
i am tempted to use my 520STFM drive, as it is a HD FDD (also a pc fdd) for it.
But I am sticking with the new PC crappy drive now.

That's interesting....
I never did any mod on it so I assume that it's originally comes with it.

@Shredder11

What revision of motherboard have you?
Mine are revision G/E.
The screw holes for the metal goes through the mobo, so they must be original.

My two Falcon 030s are both revision D/C. The motherboard model numbers are CA401332-002 and CA401332-003.

Funny that my motherboard number is CA401332-001.
So yours may be newer motherboard than mine :?:

Guess, that explains why you don't have that piece of metal thingy there.
Mmmm.... May be it can do without it.....

My Falcon had this metal shield, but I removed it when I first recased the Falcon in 1995 and has never used it since.

Ok, but you also mounted the FDD somewhere else right if it's a tower?
Problem is my FDD will still be at the original place.
I wonder if Hippy Dave is right and it needs it for electrical conduction / grounding. :?:

The Falcon has been "de-towered" since 2001, and the floppy is at it's original position. I have not experienced any problems with the floppy.

Ok. I have removed the metal for a week now.
FDD is working great, system did not hang.
So removal of that metal seems to have no effect on the system.

Well, I removed the aforementioned piece of metal. I had to put it back quickly as the earth appeared to stop spinning. Quick thinking stopped another earth disaster event. Sorry for the large earth tremor yesterday before lunch!

Looking at it, it appears to just be fill-in shielding used for screening purposes.
I don’t remember seeing it on my Falcon, but then the floppy works fine so I have not had the need to inspect this section for a while…
Falcon, Atari 520ST, 520STFM, 1040STE, Mega, TT and more PC's than I care to count and an assortment of 8 bit micros (nearly forgot the Psion's).
Visit the Atari-Forum Wiki. Lots of technical info at DrCoolZic Atari ST Site :D
