Pebbles/Pebbledash on F030

Postby dml » Tue Nov 26, 2013 3:32 pm

Does anyone here know if Dave Murphy's Pebbledash game was actually released on Falcon030? He worked on it for ages while we were at BSS (in between working on Videlity, Jaguar and other stuff) but I can't find any links and I'm not sure if he actually finished it.

It was a boulderdash remake. The loading screen had a big yellow smartie for the 'pebbles' character, there was a map editor and playable levels. It was Falcon-specific, either 256 colours or TC. Gameplay was really good, it seemed close to release at the time.

Can't say I recall having seen it, certainly not on the MEGA Archive or similar CD compils of the time, no 16/32 release either. And I never saw mention of it online at the BSS/Titan/Cortex website.

I have never heard of it, even if I really love games like Boulder Dash. I made a Boulder Dash clone myself for the Macintosh named to "Crystal Gems" to be found on Softpedia:

Ok, thanks for the replies. It does look like it has not been released...

I didn't want to post any material on this if it was already available - but it's a shame that it would stay hidden. I'll see if I can find it.

Looks like I have mis-remembered the facts - it wasn't a Falcon game at all, but an STE game which is Falcon compatible.

:-z

I think I was getting confused with the map editor he made for Falcon (based on the editor for this game) for the Jaguar project, which was 256 cols high res and looked a lot like the map editor in Pebbles.

Anyway I have found what looks like the source code and a test binary for Pebbles. The good news is that the test binary runs and the level can be played. The bad news is, the source is more recent and more complete (basic menu, hiscores, editor etc.) but doesn't appear to run when assembled, just gets stuck after fading down the menu. It might be fixable but I don't have time to look closer just now.

An unfinished titlepic and screen grabs are attached below. The pic was either by Alan Grier or Phil Matthews (PCM).

Perhaps if Dave can be contacted he can offer a more complete version - but at least it's not completely gone. I'm ok to upload the test binary since it looks like just one level but I won't post his source unless he can be contacted for permission first.

[EDIT]

Oh and this wasn't a BSS product - it was Dave's own project he was doing for fun. I didn't make that clear.

...a few more screenies from the version assembled from source. The title graphics were placeholders. (This version locks up when trying to start the game or launch the map editor).

Never heard of it before and it's not in our archives yet... so if you manage to dig this up it would be amazing :)

It looks similar but after trying the STF disk, I think it is a different game, see the screenshot.

It's definitely a different game, since I have the source for Pebbles :)

However it looks like Dave has lifted the gfx from this game as a placeholder, until he could get one of the artists to commit to doing new stuff.

That probably explains why it was left in stasis, never released - he didn't have any graphics.

[EDIT]

I think maybe the reason the 'source build' doesn't run properly is because it's assuming you want to load and edit a world or map, and I haven't quite figured that out yet so it's trying to launch an empty map. When I get a bit more time I'll have a more serious attempt at making it work.
