Hi all,

Here is the final release of Beats of Rage.

You can download it at the following address:

http://dl.free.fr/jbUYRa7Tk

As before, it's a temporary link, so please, for all those who have copied it to a permanent site, remove the V1.1 and remplace it by this new one.
(TOF, pouet.net and the other). I would be grateful for this.

Again, I strongly recommand to read the readme.txt file.

What's new :

New features:
- JOYPAG implementation.
- a new opponent added in levels 1, 2, 7, 8 (I let you discover him)
- some more items to get
- 1 life added every 25 000 points
- the player can't be shot while jumping

Bug fixed:
- bad dead character flickering animation had wrong timers
- better falling synchronisation. The character must reach the ground before allowing a new animation
- the LOOP order is now correctly handled in the engine for some walking animations and for the new enemy
- the throw direction is now correct
- the VGA double VBL bug should be fixed in the 2VBL_BUG.PRG special version.
- reworked AI of the opponents for better playability
- height of the player clipped while an opponent attacks many time the player while he was falling (this generated a bug in level 7)
- many little bugs fixed here and there

This is the final release, so unless you find a bug in the game, I won't change it anymore.

Have fun, Stay (H)atari

Best regards
Laurent / Thadoss

Thank you very much for that excellent release! I love it!
It really shows the Falcon's potential as a gaming machine!
Please do more games in that quality!

Chris

Thanks for aadding jagpad support, I will try it on my Falcon later. I agree the quality is amazing :)

BTW what videomode is in use? 8bpp or TC?

It's in TC as far as I am aware. Which makes it rock even more, no 'out of the box' Amiga will run this so we have a 2D 'win' eventually

Yes, it's true color (320*240)

This mode allows a quite easy programation and allows also to play easily with fast transparent sprites (as long as you hardcode them correctly)

Could you share your basic sprite techniques on the Coding forum? I am pretty amazed that TC allows such framerate with proper coding and sprite handling.

Hi Simon,

I've just seen your comment on pouet, thanks a lot.

I just want to be sure that you tested with the latest version (the final release), as on pouet, it's still the 1.1 version.
You can get the final one from various sites, you can try the site of TOF : http://christophe.bray.free.fr/informat ... x1.htm#bor

Today I tried BOR on plain Falcon with phantom accelerator... it runs like hell ;) BUS acceleration still rules :)

I wrote a review in German:

Will do an English translation during my next nightshift ;)

Stay Atari!

Hi,

I don't understand anything of what is written in the german forum, but thanks anyway. ;)

Laurent

PS for SimonSunnyboy : maybe I understood that you wrote about the jagPad management which could be better. I agree, but when I wrote the game, I didn't own a Jagpad, so I did it for keyboard/joystick.
When MacFalcon gave me one for christmas (thanks again to you Chris  ), I adapted my code to add the joypad command (at minimum) to keep compatibility with the 2 other input modes.

To take into account correctly the Joypad, I would have had to rewrite some parts of the game and I didn't want that again :)
Of course, if one day I write another game, I'll be careful about it. :ehum: :-D

But as far as I know, BOR is the only falcon game that allow to play with either input device without having to choose between them at menu entrance (I mean, you can start the game with the keyboard, change to a joystick or to the the joypag in the game, on the fly).

Regards
Laurent

No worries, I can understand that major rewrites were not due. It is only a slight minus, no total downer.
As for multiple input devices, I prefer a locking scheme so once one controller has been selected it is the only one. I always hated playing some game and when someone else (pesky brother, "friend") "accidentally" hit the keyboard to interfere with the game controls.

I personally would go for an implicit choice on the main menu. If you press joystick button, joystick is used, etc. but the other controllers would be locked out instead of Pause keys or the like.

IMHO the game is a bit too easy to play through with the first character, I did it on the first try with the final version and I had only played the game twice before with the previous release. If the enemies come only from single direction, one can just keep fire+down+left (if enemies come from right) to do turn kicks and they die.

I think there might be a bit less enemies at the same time in lower levels, but more from different sides and maybe not all at the same time, but after you've started kicking some of the enemies would come from different direction, so that one needs to turn and lead the enemies to have time to hit. On higher levels one would get enemies from both sides at the same time.

Here's an English translation of my review I did during my nightshift:

Beats of Rage-new fodder for Atari Falcon

For a long time it was pretty quiet around the last real Atari computer. With the exception of a handful of demos and a few (high quality) puzzle games there were practically no more releases. Certainly not a complete game. The last highlight in that direction was Downfall - a port of the Atari Jaguar game of the same name. And that was already released in 2011.

The more I was surprised when Thadoss announed in December 2012 on atari-forum.com that he has programmed a new game for the Atari Falcon. As of today (January 12, 2013) there is now the official final release and one is quite impressive!

Beats of Rage is a classic beat em up game in the style of great examples such as Double Dragon or Final Fight. The story is quickly told: You take on the role of Max, Kula or Mandy who want to avenge the death of their close family members by a notorious gang.

During nine levels you see nonstop action you have never seen before on the Falcon! It's incredible what Thadoss squeezes out of the stock(!) Falcon after 14 months of development! The game was completely written in 68030 assembly language what results in very smooth gameplay! Given the huge sprites in large numbers smoothly and beautifully animated flit across the screen, the number of moves each character can perform, the multi-level parallax scrolling in beautiful truecolor landscapes and the polyphonic background Modfiles paired with digitized sound effects it is hard to believe that you sit in front of a 20 year old Atari computer.

Beats of Rage means bashing enemies at the highest level. The backgrounds are very detailed and even opponents crowd is diverse. Although of course typically for the genre the sprites repeat during the game.

Each character has his own style and special techniques. Punches, Kicks and even throws are included and the flow of the game is above average.

Beats of Rage can be played with keyboard, joystick or even the Jaguar joypad. With the latter controls are the best, although unfortunately not the full functionality of the controller is exploited and all three buttons will perform the same action. But at least you can use the PAUSE button and change the controller during the game on the flow.

That the high scores are saved rounds up the excellent overall impression of the game.

Conclusion:

Beats of Rage is probably one of the best games ever Falcon. If it had been released during the lifespan of the Falcon (1992 to 1995) then it would have been an absolute KillerApp. Even today, it is an impressive proof what an unaccelerated Falcon is capable of, and that this machine in terms of games unfortunately came much too short! The Falcon conversion is close to the Dreamcast version, as only drawbacks remain the lack of a two-player mode, the lack of cutscenes as well as the somewhat abrupt end of the game.

Beats of Rage is definitely so far the best Falcon 030 (!) release of this millennium, and it is also a prime candidate for the best 060 release as it also does run on accelrated Falcons. But then it is already a genre decision as a similar game for the Falcon previously simply did not exist and you know, one can hardly compare apples to oranges ...

I sincerely hope that some developers have been woken up by this unexpected release and the many dusty projects may now be published finally.

Projects like Beats of Rage prove that the Falcon still rocks and that there are still very talented developers among us Atarians.
