Beats of Rage

Postby LaurentS » Tue Dec 11, 2012 10:16 pm

Hi all,

I'm happy and proud to give you my first game on Falcon called "Beats of rage".
I've presented it at the Sillyventure convention 2012 where it finished #1 :)

You can download it at the following adress : http://dl.free.fr/iR1aPVDZr

I suggest you to read the readme.txt file which gives some informations about the game.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask here.
And don't hesitate to share your best scores with us.

This game runs on a standard Falcon with 4 Megs of ram and upper configurations.

Don't forget that the original falcon is a great machine with a lot of potential, so use it and break the limits.

Merry christmas and happy new year !
Stay (H)atari.

Best regards
Laurent Sallafranque
Thadoss / Dune

PS : the zipfile is uploaded to a temporary sharing files server.
I would be very pleased if you could make copies on your sites (DHS, TOF, ...)

I like the implication there's more to come! :D

I was there, it's a great game. Very console styled, which isn't common on the Falcon and decently playable too. Thanks for your efforts!

Whilst I don't have a Falcon, I've copied the file onto the following links:

For those without a Falcon!

There is the Dreamcast version which I would guess is pretty similar ;)

Hi Laurent,
the game is very impressive! Unfortunately I must report a bug, the joystick doesn't work. System specs:

Atari Falcon 030 14MB RAM +ct63 at 66MHz 256 TT RAM
IDE 2 SD adapter for hard disk.
PEST adapter.

I've performed the following tests on both modes: Removed the pest adapter and ethernec. Clean boot. I also tested the joystick with another game and it worked.

P.S. Why do you have two executables? I tested with both..

Hi all,

I'll try to reply to everybody.

For the joystick, I'll have to check a bit more.
You can still use the keyboard in waiting a patch version ;)

For the hatari version, it seems that the game works well (with a noisy sound) under the old hatari (hatari.exe, not hatari_falcon.exe).
It's just a question of timings into hatari (sometimes the new core works better, sometimes, the old one does).

What should I add ?

Yes :) I'll do a special thread for this (remaind me if I forget)

Nice video.

You know, to kill the enemies, you can attack them with the legs (when playing with mandy) by pressing simultaneously down+left.
If you grab an opponent, you can then throw him away by pressing down.

Each player has 18 different movements (10 attacks), try to learn them, you'll improve your gaming with Beats of Rage.
My best game was 8 levels with Mandy.

I've never finished the game (without cheating  )

Regards

Laurent / Thadoss

-black border instead of white (rgb tv)

movements and attacks of the characters are not as good as the xbox and dreamcast versions
other than that everything is great

Hi all,

It seems I left a bug with the joystick, I'll check that soon.
If anybody could test to connect the joystick on the port of the mouse, I think I inverted the 2 ports in my code, it would be nice.

Regards and have fun

I checked, joystick doesn't work on the mouse port either. While you are at it, why not adding jagpad support as well?

Looks totally great! This is the stuff we had needed when the falcon came out. ... only drawback is that there is no original music... just "old" modfiles from the amiga scene :)

I assume the 8 channel audio is 4 for the MOD 4 for FX ?

As far as I saw it was all 4-channel mods... so I think yes.

Hi all,

> ... only drawback is that there is no original music... just "old" modfiles from the amiga scene :)

Yes, I'm not a musician, neither a graphist (I can modify some pictures for my own purpose, but not create) ;)

> ... only drawback is that there is no original music... just "old" modfiles from the amiga scene :)

Yes again :) 4 voices for the music, channel 0 for the player sounds and 3 channels for the enemies.
If you want, you can replace the mods of the game by some other mods (4 channels) you like, as long as it fits in memory (some levels like level 2 are close to 4 Megs, there's really not much memory left).
You just have to give your module the same name as the one you remove.

I've chosen some modules with a Jazzy style to give the game a general "old fashion" style.
The same for the splash screens of the levels.

For the technic:

I've coded everything in pure 68030.
As I wanted to fit in 4 Megs on standard Falcons, I had to optimize a lot (that's the key of the game).
So, as I couldn't create some buffers in memory, I've done the following :
- all the screen is redraw (with move.l or movem.l) --> 2VBLs
- all the sprites are hardcoded. I've developped an image analyser that optimize the images in terms of memory and cycles and transform them directly in 68030 code by hardcoding most of the values in registers (d0-a5).l
- all the sprites (left and right) are in memory (no recalculation)
- I use a virtual screen around the real screen to avoid clipping

With my image analyser, I can display up to 5 enemies + the player + the background in the 2 VBLs
If you want more infos, just ask :)

For the little scrolling glitch, it's not due to the 2 VBLs but only to the player movement (I'll have to check why).
I've got a version where I've unlinked the camera from the player and the scrolling is perfectly smooth.

I'm fixing the bugs some people encountered and I add a few things I didn't have time to include before.
If there are some things you'd like to see in the V1.1, just write it, I'll do what I can.

Thadoss

I think Dma-Sc could easily compose something in that kind of style :)
