Star Raiders on the jag!

Postby GroovyBee » Wed Oct 17, 2012 10:34 am

I'm not sure if this is the right forum  but yesterday evening I got the ST version of Star Raiders running on the Jaguar :-

The most time consuming part was converting the source code and fixing the errors. Even though the ST's graphics are converted from planar to chunky on the fly it runs at a good speed on my PAL jaguar. More information over at AtariAge :-

Kool Project :) Glad to see you have had some success!

As for music / SFX there is a DSP based POKEY player already I think? Perhaps you could use that!
Atari STFM 512 / STe 4MB / Mega ST+DSP / Falcon 4MB 16Mhz 68882 - DVD/CDRW/ZIP/DAT - FDI / Jaguar / Lynx 1&2 / 7800 / 2600 / XE 130+SD Card // Sega Dreamcast / Mega2+CD2 // Apple G4

As far as I'm aware there is no ST sound chip emulator for the jag DSP.

I understand! There are Atari 8 bit pokey sound emulator on the Falcon I think GEM PLAY? and SID chip emulators so instead of YM emulation you could you an 8 bit sound on a 16 bit game!

A nice idea but the DSP in the jag is a different chip (its custom silicon) compared to the one in the Falcon so the source code is not compatible.

After all these years, we finally get a remake of Star Raiders on the Jag...

And also a TOS computer running on Jag hardware which ST Format kept promising...

(Ok, so it's not a Falcon replacer but it's just one step closer to a dream...)

Technically its not a remake. Its the original ST game source code (from back in the day and released by Curt Vendel in '08) that has been adapted and built for the jag hardware. The graphics are converted from ST planar to jag chunky pixel mode on the fly by the jag's GPU.

I always thought a Jag based computer running TOS would have been an awesome machine with all the custom chips in the Jag being available to programmers, ah one day 8)

so was there a plan to make the Jaguar into a desktop by Atari?
if so there must have been some extra hardware needed. perhaps they had plans to have special mouse and keyboards that plug into the joy ports.
hdd addon wich plugs onto the cd unit and has the tos images on chips or just a operating system that would have been just installed on the harddrive.
it would perhaps been a fun desktop :?:

Don't forget they had planned a PC card that was an entire Jaguar at one point in
time...

From the Atari Jaguar FAQ (http://www.holyoak.com/atari/jagfaq.txt)

* Sigma Designs

- JAGUAR PC CARD. Computer peripheral. Sigma Designs is developing a
card for IBM PCs and compatables that runs Jaguar CD software and acts
as a ReelMagic MPEG card. Last announced release date was December
1994. No price has been given.

I'd have given anything if Atari had stuck around on the computer side of things
long enough to release a 2nd Falcon version, based on an '040, with a Jag chipset.

It boggles my mind... :)

Well Atari UK said they "could" make a TOS based computer based on the Jaguar's hardware. But in the States, the Tramiels declared the entire ST line to be a bust and focused solely on being a video game company. To me British magazines like ST Format were way too optimistic about Atari computers succeeding but reading Current Notes in North America gave us a more realistic picture sadly...

Yeah, I was really looking forward to owning a PC with the Jag card along with Gemulator & other emulators to have a more Atari like PC. But the card only used Jag CD's which weren't released, so Sigma canceled it. I think they did come out with a 3DO card though...

It's a pity things went this way. The Atari "empire" was always splitted. In the USA the focus was on games and here in Europe the Ataris were more serious working machines. On the other side I think they generally had more success on the European market. I mean, the 2600 was sold until 1992 here and I know many people who bought one new in the late 80s...

Many people hoped after the Jaguar there would bee a new computer system. And it still is a shame the Jaguar didn't sell better... at the end of its days, there came out pretty decent games (Atari Karts, Battlemorph, Primal Rage, Iron Soldier 2) :(

But we can't do anything about it, just honor the memories
