Wow! Wow! Thomas!

Great news and great to hear from you! :)

looking forward to see Willies A. finished! I was stunned back in 90s when I saw demo! to shame that there was no more such hi quality games for Falcon, or at least: not finished!

- like:

X Moon / New Trend

or Boom / New Power Generation

but it is nice to see some games were finished, like Painium Disaster !

and hope soon Willies Adventure ! :)

Painium Disaster seems not to work with VGA :(
I hope the trend to TFT displays is not lost. For me it is important for a decent Falcon production to work on 60Hz VGA displays aswell.

Are you sure there's not a fix out there? and have you tried RGB2VGA? does both ways!

Simon, Willie's will run in 50Hz both for VGA and RGB. Going up to 60Hz would mean that the game would have to run mostly in 30 fps which is not acceptable. (60Hz isn't acceptable either because all animations goes too fast).
3 of my 4 TFTs works fine in 50Hz "VGA" mode (HP, FujitsuSiemens, Samsung). The 4:th one (also a FujitsuSiemens) displays the screen correct but has a "dialog" (which you can't remove) saying "49.96 Hz is out of range" or something like that (morons!), so that one is used in ST High on the STe.

3 of them was bought at flee markets for 5-15EUR each. Without any deep testing I think the Samsung is the one that works best in my setup.

It's sad that so many promising games never was finished. Willie's would be also be dead if it weren't for Hatari. It's so much easier to develop and to find the time now. I've also used Motorolas (Freescale) 56300 simlator alot which is great for testing out DSP code. The package includes assemblator and simulator, quite easy to use. Recommended! Anyone knows if there is a 56000/1 version aswell? (There's traces of it when googling but no luck so far).
Here is the 56300 version though (Windows and Solaris): http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/sit ... CW-SUITE56

News about ACE will come when it's time. :-)

Hi Thomas!

It's really encouraging to see this game will be worked on again.

ThomasNewBeat wrote:It's sad that so many promising games never was finished. Willie's would be also be dead if it weren't for Hatari.

I agree completely - without Hatari the inertia is much higher to develop on the old machines directly. However it would also be sad if the real machines are not used to experience/play the end result of the hard work :)

I have been using Suite56 mainly for the assembler. I remember there was a simulator and it was part of the reason I tried to locate the package - but after getting the assembler to work again I didn't spend time to try that... have been using Hatari's DSP debugger instead (which is fine for non-audio work, at least).

I should try to find time to look at the simulator.

Anima posted a link to Suite56 for DSP56000/1/2 (for Windows) elsewhere on this forum in the last year or so. It's worth a look to see if this is different from yours? It is getting very difficult to find this software as time passes...

ThomasNewBeat wrote:News about ACE will come when it's time. :-)

I'm very interested in ACE and would like to find out more about it.

Back in the mid-90's I felt the DSP was deeply underused in the area of sound synthesis (the only thing that really interested me about it for audio programming), and when I returned to Atari recently I saw this program and thought "problem looks solved" ;-)

I don't really like the "get a different monitor" attitude. 50Hz VGA may have been ok in the 90s but for 2 decades PC games worked well with 60Hz refresh rate. I don't think that this is a showstopper, and I prefer a 30fps game running in normed video modes over 50fps running only on old CRTs.

At least new code should consider this, I accept that already existing code (like Willie) does not have to be modified.
I always liked the DHS Falcon demos were the user can pick the mode most suitable to the connected monitor and/or CPU horse power.

Falcon games should adopt this scheme aswell.

But all ramblings about 50Hz aside, I'd definitly buy Willie for a reasonable price!

Simon, I don't have a "get a different monitor" attitude, I was only sharing my experiences of my TFTs and suggested that you can pick up a 50Hz-compatible very cheap. If you don't want one, fine.

I would have made the same decision today for a scrolling platformer, which can't be compared to 3d-demos or PC games with tearing all over the screen. But if you don't mind some tearing, PC is definitely the way to go, it still can't sync to a screen after 2+ decades. ;-)

dml, thanks, I'll take a look and see if it can be found!

We should probably change the VIDEL setup so that the refresh rate is just above 50Hz and not under. My LCD is also giving me a warning (which cannot be removed) when going under 50Hz.

Daniel, have you tried to go just above 50Hz? I thought that you have to go higher to get rid of the warning?

Somehow I hardly ever see tearing apart from laggy St games or on the GP2X Wiz...30fps games on the Falcon are available and they don't tear on VGA. Same goes for a lot of PC games...we don't have 1993 anymore.

No, it's not 1993 but the Falcon is still from 1992?

30fps is fine for some games but would look terrible for Willie's so I'd rather have it not working than working badly/ugly/non-smooth.

Anyway, I'll go back to the cave and continue with the projects. Perhaps I'll make some status here or elsewhere later on. Feel free to contact me for whatever reason.

All the best,

/Thomas

I don't see a need for more disagreements either - i hope you realize that i'm still a supporter of the Willie project and just have a differing opinion on support for standards.

While Hatari's Falcon CPU <-> DSP sync isn't perfect due to issues in cycle accuracy, additional features for DSP debugging could be considered. And Douglas has for example been using Hatari's DSP profiler to optimize his DSP code.

Would Mikro's cute56 help: https://github.com/mikrosk/cute56/tree/master ?

In case you're interested, I have alsoa plain ANSI-C version of his Qt/C++ DSP LOD -> binary converter. I needed it to be able to do DSP code conversions natively (under emulation) as there's no Qt port to Atari. :-)

not related to Willies Adventure but today, after 20 years, Putty Squad is released for Amiga :)

it is platform game. demo was released in 1994 and only today it is released:

http://www.system3.com/promotional-down ... quadamiga/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOJYvJnfah0

btw that raster color in background looks really nice, is it possible to do the same in Willies? :)
btw2 since amiga has dual playfields, does it means that it can scroll two "layers" and every layer has 4 bit colors (15+1 transparent color)? how than it can achieve 256 colors with playfields (or can not :D)?
and does Amigas AGA playfields have some benefits over Falcon 8bit color mode?
Daniel, how did you use bitplanes in Willies?

Willie's Adventures features parallax scrolling as well. We use 2 bitplanes for the background, and 6 bitplanes for the foreground.

Good to hear that Hatari is helpful in finishing old games good games like Willie's :-) By the way, Willie was the first program where I got DSP sound in Hatari five years ago (see http://hatari.tuxfamily.org/archive/ber ... 00243.html) ... funny, Willie was useful to improve Hatari, now Hatari is useful for improving Willie!
