Willies Adventure - Words from Daniel Hedberg.

Postby EvilFranky » Mon Oct 01, 2012 8:59 am

Ok so basically I've had some brief conversation with Daniel Hedburg of New Beat Developments fame regarding the unreleased Willies Adventure, over on YouTube.

It's safe to say that the whole Falcon community wanted to see this finished as the demo looked and played fantastically well.

I seen a comment about possibly releasing the unfinished game so thought it would be a good opportunity to probe the possibility with him.

It went as follows:-

Hi Daniel,

I notice you have never logged into YouTube for a while but thought it was worth a try sending you a message.

I noticed your comments on the Willie's Adventure video about releasing the unfinished game.

Have you and the rest of the team members discussed the possibility of getting it released to the community?

It would be a real coup to gain access to a more updated version than the demo that was released all those years ago and would surely be well received by the Atari community, specifically the Falcon owners.

Willie's Adventure always looked so promising and really showed what a standard Falcon could do with a platform genre game.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope to get a response soon.

Cheers,

Frankie

Hi Frankie,

Thanks for your kind words. I have talked to Thomas about releasing an updated version of the game several times. He continued to work on the game after I stopped (shortly after the second preview) and he has produced quite a lot graphics, music and new levels, even multiple playable characters to choose from. Unfortunately no levels were entirely finished so it is hard to release something that would be playable. This is of course very sad and I hope that he will finish a few levels eventually and release it so people can enjoy it. It is a fantastic game and it bugs me that we never finished it. I would suggest you to contact Thomas and encourage him to put in a few hours of work in wrapping things up and release something.

Thanks for writing!

-Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Sorry for the late reply!

Thanks for getting in touch with me.

Would you mind if I posted this message on atari-forum.com and created a topic to gather some interest?

I'll happily get in touch with Thomas and see if something could be done!

Thanks,

Frankie

I don't mind at all, but if you plan on post it with Thomas' e-mail address, I guess you better write Thomas first to make sure he doesn't mind. If you remove the e-mail address and just refer to our homepage (nb.atari.org) I see no problems at all.

-Daniel

So as you can see from the conversation Daniel would also be keen to see Willies Adventure completed to a degree and has encouraged us to contact Thomas Bergström and see if we can gently convince him to tidy up the package and release it to the general Falcon public!

This is potentially a very good opportunity to have one of the most sort after Falcon games eventually released.

It might be a good idea to try and find what needs to be done from Thomas and see if there is anything the community can do to help? GFX, Music, Coding?

Any way, it is a positive from one of the New Beat guys so lets see what we can do!

I hope Thomas will be willing to share sources for this game.
But as I know Thomas he would like to finish the game himself as he put so much work into it and most of all the game is 100% asm including levels and I believe he has doubts sombody else is able to finish it.

Anyway ... this is my favourite game for the Falcon and would really like to see it finished.

And there is your probable best method of motivation, how many people would be prepared to pay for it. Maybe time for a poll?

Hey, nice to see something may get released. If he is having troubles with level designs, he could put together a level editor of some kind (either sprite blocks or layered drawing program or layers of pictures to load). That way he can release whatever levels he has managed to make and let the community do the rest. True, a (user friendly) level editor or even a level/mod file interpreter can be more work. I'd probably pay for a copy if the ability to create modifications exists. :)

What's the game written in? I've very little experience of coding on the Falcon so far (I wrote a Starfield in GFA basic ;)) but I have a game dev background... if I can get setup and it's not all assembly I might be able to pitch in if that's a viable option.

It's written in 100% assembly. Thomas and I wrote the code a long time ago, and there's not much more to do code-wise. What's left is mostly graphics, music, and level design.

Which music format are you supporting in the game?

Do we have some parameters for the levels, so some designs can be created? If that's ok with you?

Heya,

The game is still progressing (thanks to Hatari and my daughter Alice!). I've been working quite alot on it the last year but there is still much work left.

Some info/status:

There will be 5 themes, djungle (as in the preview), winter, desert, forest, "spooky". Each theme will have 5 levels and 1 boss level (isn't that original?).
Many of the levels are finished by design so you can jump around in them, etc, but only a few have all the enemies and obstacles finished.
3 of 5 bosses are finished or nearly finished.
There will be one last "boss of the bosses" which is not even started on yet.
The menu is done in big parts, you can choose character to play with (Willie/Willary/Wilma/Wilhelm) and choose level to play.
Music... I made a few .MODs back in the days but I don't like them at all so perhaps there will be some request for help in that area later...

Atm, Im having a break from it to finish new versions of ACE MIDI/Tracker.
