JOY - a new Falcon030 demo from New Beat

Postby dhedberg » Tue Jul 09, 2019 11:25 am

New Beat has released a new demo for the Falcon030. The demo is for standard 16MHz Falcon030 computers and requires at least 4MB of ST-RAM. Both VGA and RGB monitors are supported. It was released at Sommarhack 2019.

The binary can be downloaded from our web page or from Pouet: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=81750
Any comments (and thumbs-up) on Pouet would be much appreciated and a very good way of ensuring that I stay motivated! ;-)

For people not in possession of a Falcon030, the demo is also available on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c90-I7aT-jU

Thanks,
Daniel

I'm not going to create a pouet account but by all means your demo is the best I have seen for Falcon for the last decade. Amazing work (and great inspiration!)

The sunrise effect was really nice!

I actually prefer this demo over most of the Falcon/Amiga 060 ones because:

1. It works on the standard machine.
2. It doesnt try to do things that are a bit beyond its abilities.
3. Its a happy demo. Not dreary industrial.

I also like that the soundtrack is very similar to the current C64 scene vibe. It even sounds a bit SID-like!

Well done Daniel and the rest of New Beat! Good work. Keep it up! :)

Great demo! Well done. I love the Rubix cube solver.
Is there a bit of Wouldn't It Be Good by Nik Kershaw in the tune at 3m10s in the YouTube video? :D

I've watched it over and over, design/timing is brilliant from start to finish. And it makes me happy.

Thanks PeP! If it makes you happy, I'm happy!
I've seen it so many times so I'm a bit sick of it, hehe, but I found another demo that I can watch over and over again... MOTUS! :-)

My Falcon always seems to lock up at different points in this demo... guess I've got some hardware debugging to do, but no idea of where to start. RAM and PSU I suppose?

Have watched the video on YouTube more than once though, love it! Great work :)

Ah, that's interesting. That happens to a friend of mine as well. His problem was that his Blitter does not do well while the machine is fairly cool. Anything using the Blitter extensively will crash the machine when cool. If he starts the machine and lets it heat up for some 30 minutes, the demo works. The demo uses the Blitter pretty heavily. Dunno if you have the same problem though, but so far I haven't heard about anyone else having problems that have not been hardware related.

Incredible demo! It brought a smile to my face =)

Am I the only one left kind of wanting a Rubix Cube game for the Falcon now? ;-) but man, that was super cool! It was kind of building up like.. wait, is that going to be... it's doing what I think it's about to... yes!!! Yes it IS! lol

That's not a bad idea! But I should probably stay away from creating games, as you probably know New Beat has a history of putting massive amount of time into games but never releasing them. Ehum. :-)

Anyways, I'm really glad to hear about your reaction to the Rubik's cube! That was exactly my intention! Really made my day! Thanks!

Good to know... I've had other issues with demos before and thought it could be blitter related. Maybe I'll try and compare some different things to see what happens. Really don't want my old girl to bite the dust :(

Yes! Lots of good contributions to this year's edition of Sommarhack! Impressive considering the size of the party.
