looking for a very old demo (the 1st I saw !)

Postby Symoon » Fri Feb 28, 2003 5:59 pm

Hi,

Years ago, before my brother bought the Atari ST, I saw a demo in a shop in Paris. This demo took place maybe in Egypt, and you could see a large background in the desert, with a river and palm trees (I'm not very sure it was like this but anyway), and there were tribes living there: tiny people moving here and there. I think the background changed from time to time.

I can't recall much more. I guess it was in 1986 or 1987.

I'd like to see that demo again, hoping it hasn't been lost... If this reminds something to anyone, please help !
Thanks
Symoon

The first thing that popped into my mind was International Karate, but your describtion doesn't really match that.
I can't remember anything like what you discribed, but i'll keep my eyes open.

well hey my memory isn't a 100% anymore. But i thought IK had some animation in the background of little people on some screens. (Hawaii dancers?? )(dessert..piramids) And since his describtion might been a little off from what he really saw at the time i thought i'll just mention it and make it clear that i'm not sure either.

It's ok to laugh about me i guess.. hmm yeah it is but next time i'll charge you for it. Maybe i'll end up as a millionaire after all :P

No please don't missunderstand
I am not laughing at you because you wrote so
I thought it was a cool observation

When that is straightned out, I think the game IK+ had those backgrounds.

Not sure though

Best Regards

ah ok.. so i will never be a millionair then :(

IK+ had some animation of water, birds, pacman and fish. But no little people and no desert backgrounds.
Maybe it was populous, power monger (or was it war monger?) or anything like that?

Thanks all for the replies :-)
I'm certain it was not International Karate, since IK is one of the first games I had when we bought the ST a few months later !
My brother bought the ST in 1987, June, so the "demo" was released before.

I'm sorry it's very hard to say what it really looked like since it was the very first time I saw a ST running - I could not compare it to anything !
As far as I remember, it wasn't a game, there was only a kind of slide-show with still screens in the desert, and these tiny tribes (a few pixels height) moving in it. There were no karateka moving in front of them

Hi,

Maybe I'm gonna ask a stupid question, but nothing to do with Lemmings 2 The Tribes ?
Here is a screenshot, we've got the tiny tribes (lemmings), the river and with some imagination the desert ?
Cheers,

Hi !

No, definitely not :-)
Maybe I can list all the elements I'm sure of, to make things easier for you:
1- release date: before June 1987. That should elminiate loads of games
2- the drawings filled the screen, I mean there was no black background like in the Lemmings Tribes picture, no "holes".
3- the view was not 100% from the side, there was a little perspective from the top (as if you were looking at the scene from a hill)
4- the background looks like desert, and old monuments (pyramids maybe, or Maya pyramyids, or something else, I can't recall). I can't recall if there were other backgrounds. I'm pretty sure there was a river, too.
5- the tribe was composed by tiny people, moving slowly together, maybe carrying something (a kind of procession ?)

It might have been from a game but there were no text displays, no "press x to start"...

Big challenge isn't it ! Thanks to everyone contributing !

Except from the tiny people it could also be a description from the Bob Winner graphics.....

Very hard, nice challenge :)

Hi again

It's not Bob Winner... The graphics of the demo were colorful, Bob Winner's were, erm, very strange ! 8O

Oh, and, BTW, I'm SURE it was not a dream :-)

Well, still didn't find this demo. I'm beginning to wonder if it could not be from "the animator" by Microdeal / Michtron.
In order to check if I'm right, does anyone know if the program can be downloaded somewhere ?
